I was looking for good trippy cartoon movies earlier today and stumbled upon a yahoo answers page that has some GREAT ones... I would highly recommend checking it out some appear too good for me not to share with all of you - it even has youtube links so that you can see what they're like.. one or two are down but just put the name of the movie in youtube and you'll find it - enjoy

I think this is the right spot for this but mods if you need to move it just let me know.. thanks :D

Animated trippy movies are a blast and the more people that know about them the better, but maybe sift through The Big and Dandy Psychedelic Media Thread for animated movies before adding posts here to avoid redundancy. There's lots of threads like these and so the more well known stuff gets repeated endlessly and it makes it hard for people looking for fresh ideas to find it.

Here's one I don't think many people know of, though.

"Visions of Frank" is a compilation of animated shorts (mostly by Japanese artists) inspired by the work of Jim Woodring. Woodring is a nueroatypical artist who has had visions of a place he calls "The Unifactor" his entire life, which he has illustrated in a series of books and a few short animated pieces. The aesthetics of this inner world inspired a number of different artists/animation houses to produce their own renditions of it. You can see an animated online short of his here. If you search elsewhere you should be able to find some low-res versions of some of the other stuff, too. I'd recommend picking up the DVD from his site if you like it and not looking for the illegal download since we are talking about seriously esoteric animation from artists who I have to doubt are making much money devoting time to stuff like this.

Want, a Good Movie to watch. Speed Racer It's so bright and always break's me a little.
That and Wallace and gromet the curse of the ware rabbit.

Some of them jap amim things are mint im looking for some good ens to

Try the Animatrix, specifically the last episode 'Matriculated'.

YES YES YESSSSSSS THIS

Seriously, the whole animatrix is good to watch while tripping, it's not that long, the animation is unique and beautiful in every episode, but yes, ESPECIALLY matriculated. Matriculated will seriously blow your MIND while tripping (or even sober) and it very much reminded me of some intense DMT experiences I've had.

Yup. I have to say I agree with the above. The other Animatrix "chapters" are good in their own way too. With lovely psychological enigmas running through them.

Paprika confuses me extremely even when sober but on ketamine it created an interesting dreamscape...

The Secret of Kells is one of the best movies for tripping I've ever seen (and I've seen A LOT of trippy movies). It should have taken the Oscar over Toy Story 3, IMO.

The animation is extremely 2D, and is meant to partially reflect the "pre-perspctive" stylings of The Book of Kells, the work of Irish monk illuminators and widely regarded as Ireland's greatest cultural artifact. Check out the Chi Rho Page from the Book of Kells:

Here's a scene to get an idea.

Looks like a winner ill be getting this, thanks for the suggestion

Larry Carlson has a lot of trippy animated stuff to watch I typically watch it to my own soundtrack tho if I'm tripping.

Cat Soup is a very trippy 30 mintues of animation.
I've watched this on several different phenethylamines.
The link isn't the best resolution though. I'm sure if one spent more time looking they could find a better video.

Ooh, it's only 30min, I'll watch it now. Please check out the works Masaaki Yuasa directed (he helped write the screenplay on this one, and did some other stuff too, iirc). There's the television series Kaiba, and Youjohan Shinwa Taikei (aka The tatami galaxy)* both of which I've seen (and love). He also did the film Mind Game and the show Kemonozume, which I have yet to see. The man's an eccentric genius, especially in the exploration of animation styles (the kind of originality that makes people interested in animation as a medium to begin with).

A lot of people find his stuff inaccessible, but I think PDers would be able to appreciate it.
*Everything about this show is great, dammit.

Trippy animation, but as a film I found it highly overrated and merely decent.

Saw that just the other day (sober), it was gorgeous! Though it was against Up, not TS3. That was a REALLY solid year for animated films though. Nominated was Up, The Secret of Kells, Coraline, the Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Princess and the Frog. It's not insulting that it didn't win given that lineup, not like Persepolis losing to Ratatouille in 2007, which still makes me angry.

Speed Racer (I assume you mean the 2008 film?) was not animated (even if there was aton of CGI). I quite enjoyed it though. It zero value as a film, but it was a damned good theatrical adaptation of the source material IMO.

Oh, and we can't mention trippiness and animation without bringing up the last two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion...

Have to give a mention, even if stated previously to:

The Wall- maybe more mental angles than overall animation.
Superjail- an animated show that will blow your mind, simply put 9/10.
The Beatles: yellow submarine- an obvious pick, especially for something while under the psychedelic persuasion.

Let me know what you think. :) I've always been surprised no one I know who's into anime knows about this. I've turned a few people onto it. Obviously by your username I don't need to tell you to watch FLCL ;)
Dead Leaves is another great & trippy anime movie. One of my faves. Again, sorry about the quality(only 480p, but hey it's youtube :\)

Love this show but it's too short. :( Also not a film :P

^Eh, so long as it's animated, why differ between show and film?

On Cat Soup - I had heard previously that it was very weird, and it lived up to that. It was quite creative and will merit rewatching at some point.

For another film....Wizards by Ralph Bakshi anyone? Please tell me I'm not the only person here to have seen it.
