So my doctor hs me on 80mg celexa a day, and 2mg clonazepam a day he also gave me 10mg ambien to sleep but the ambien really isn't helping much anymore I told him so he prescribed me trazodone 50mg nightly to sleep...I heard not to mix celexa and trazodone..any advice? I'm just using it to sleep

No idea about the mix, but it does metabolize into mCPP which can make you feel derped in the morning.
Nothing like taking a sleep aid and waking up under the influence of a shitty piperazine.

:D

I took celexa for a long time, but not as nearly as high of a dosage, and have been taking benzos for a while, ambien doesn't work for me. Celexa and trazodone both have SSRI properties, and can cause serotonin syndrome. Trazodone is actually an SARI, but it also plays around with serotonin. I'm not sure why your doctor would prescribe you both at once, knowing that. Trazodone is either used as an anti-depressant but more often as a sleeping medication, so maybe someone with a bit more drug knowledge will drop in here. I never took trazodone while on an SSRI, so I only know there is an increase in the possibility of serotonin syndrome, and 80mg of citalopram is a pretty high dosage.

EDIT: Also, please give your threads more specific titles in the future, I'm going to change this so people have more of an idea of what your question is about.

I think combining trazodone and citalopram (celexa) COULD cause serotonin syndrome, which is probably why you heard not to mix them.

However, 50mg trazodone is a very low dose (the regular dose for sleep but when treating anxiety/depression it can go alot higher - it can go up to like 600mg.

I would think you will prolly be fine seeings as it is a low dose but if you are concerned chat with your dr :).

Actually, if you are nervous, you can call a pharmacist. If you have a Walgreens or something around that is 24 hrs (it could be late where you are, not sure of time zone) you could just find the number, call, and ask. I've found that pharmacists tend to know more about drugs than drs do, and they usually seem happy to answer questions like yours.

There is a risk with being on too many serotonergics at once, but I was prescribed 40mg of citalopram and 300mg of trazodone for over a year, and never experienced any adverse effects.
