*bump* This thread should be preserved forever.
But I notice that nobody has provided a conclusive bracket to cover exactly what is meant by the blanket term "NRG". Ministry of Sound (who else) have confused the issue no end with naming their Hard Trance compilations "Hard NRG". But what else would you expect from the corporation that has raped dance music like no other?
To me, NRG is a very specific style of music, as played by DJ Mook and DJ Morgan. Their stuff can be found at
www.hardnrg.com , along with UK Hard House (They are similar but not the same) NRG is usually more bassy, and has a more bouncey sound. UK Hard is characterised by quite silly high end samples, a classic UK Hard track would be Lisa Lashes - Unbelievable. I can't think of any classic NRG tracks offhand. It's usual for most NRG DJ's to also play UK Hard in their sets, as is the reverse.
Now, what a lot of people are refering to here under the blanket term "NRG" is actually Hard Trance. Now Hard Trance is actually quite a nice genre, but has a 'sameishness' to it. Although I'll be the first to admit that many of the anthems get me moving no matter what. And a word of advice. If it's a DJ Scot Project remix (or sounds similar), then it's Hard Trance! not NRG! Classic tracks include Beam vs Cyrus - Thunder In Paradise, Cosmic Gate - Exploration of space, and anything Scot Project has remixed.
Now, go forth and decide exactly what the fuck you hate, and hate it. Also, shut the fuck up, becuase I want to listen to my NRG and Hard Trance.
