This NRG fad - when oh when will it die

*stands and applauds Kirsty's post*
A lot of music is crap, a lot of music which a lot of people like is crap, a lot of music which very few people like is crap, a lot of music is good, a lot of music which a lot of people like is good, a lot of music which very few people like is good...
The point is, there is enough variety in the music in the world to please everyone, but there will always be some kinds of music which people don't like, whatever it is, no matter how good someone else thinks it is...
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you can't rationalise your opinion and give valid reasons for why you hold that opinion, your opinion means nothing to me...
NRG and associated genres have its uses... While I wouldn't say I like it (not at all) in the right time and place and state of mind I could enjoy it simply for the sake of dancing... I would much rather be shuffling away to some smooth platipus-style trance, or bouncing away to some funky yaki-style techno, but if I were ever in a position where the only music I could dance to was NRG, I could still enjoy myself...
I would however always choose to not put myself in that position if I could avoid it, and if I had to choose between listening to NRG or silence, the silence would win, no competition...
To tell the truth, I havn't listened to a lot of NRG, so there may be some NRG tracks out there which I'd actually like, but out of all the NRG tracks I've heard, I havn't really liked any, including plenty which other people have considered great...
The fact that a lot of people like it is irrelevant to me, a lot of people like the Herald Sun, a lot of people like John Howard, a lot of people like driving their car 20+ kms over the speed limit, a lot of people like seeing other people suffer (whether they admit it or not) ...IMFHO the mindless majority's opinion indicates what is bad, not what is good...
Me NRG is too simple, too predictable, and too pre-processed (meaning most of it sounds like a re-hash of something else) ... If someone can point out any tracks which they think aren't able to be labelled in that way, I'll be happy to listen...
A lot of minimal and hard techno can be labelled simple and pre-processed too, which is why I don't listen to it much either... But mixed by a talented DJ, and it's transformed into something really enjoyable, either to listen to or to dance too... I'd prefer funky techno however, or sets by Christian Smith, Ben Simms and Ken Ishii...

Will enter the debate by saying the true dj craft is best realised with a fuckin good hip hop dj. Cool hand Luke @ the good bar on Oxford for example + tony touch or funkmaster flex(Not that I have ever seen them - would kill) but Whether you love or hate hip hop the scratching and mixing is so much more skillful when done properly with this music (imo).

Well it's been a long time since I've entered this discussion, judging from my first response I must have had a bad day back then. ;)
My opinion since then is that I couldn't care less. If I don't like something I don't listen to it, and well on the occasion that I do listen to it (someone's house), then I usually shut up and listen or just talk over the top of it. ;)
Yes I don't like NRG or Happy Hard or Nik Fish for that matter ;) , but I now have better things to do with my time rather than whinging about it.
Maybe NRG will die in the ass and maybe it won't?? The point is does it matter? If u don't like it then don't listen to it or don't go to a club that plays it, it's as simple as that!!
Oh and just incase anyone is curious as to why I don't like NRG, then it's because IMO it's the same ol same ol with each track, it seems like the same buildups to me and I like a bit of variety with my music. NRG just doesn't do it for me, and if anyone dares to even assume that I'm one of those people that ONLY likes hard banging techno then you are sadly mistaken, and I for one am sick of being given that title. Yes I do like hard banging techno, but I like lots of other styles, such as trance, house, breaks, DnB and the list goes on.

"but I now have better things to do with my time rather than whinging about it."
sadly while at work i have nothing better to do
but friday is my last day (till i leave the shithole i work in) and then i plan on spending some quality time with my 1200sl's... ive been neglecting them lately and its time i showed a little more love :P

NRG is fucking awesome! But I think that you have to be careful not to overload on it. Yes it is repetitive, and yes it is predictable. But isnt trance? Isnt most electronic music if we were honest wiht ourselves? And isnt that what we want music that has predictable breakdowns and build ups makes is very easy to dance to. And isnt that one of the primary reasons we club? In my view it is an awesome style of music but it has its limits, in the same way techno, trance, punk, Hip Hop, and pop music?
NRG is here to stay, and if you dont like it because you dont have to listen to it. Im not that much of a fan of Deep House, but its alright occasionally, when im in the mood. Because isnt that what music is an expression of emotion?
Im getting a bit philosophical, ill shut up now.

Proper trance isn't predictable, you can't pick up a Platipus record, listen to it for the first time, and be able to predict where a breakdown/buildup will happen... You can with far too many NRG tracks...
'Course Platipus is the cream of trance, some more common trance tracks are pretty predictable...

hi im new to bluelight (i finally joined!!!)
i like most NRG especially when your having a really good night and feel like going hard at it
-BUT- i agree it can wear a little thin especially when it gets really repetative.
thats what i think anyway :)

boom.boom.boom eeeoooorrr woop woop poly woly ding dong>>.10 bucks 4 who eva can write an nrg song(in text)that i can understand/its not hard/..that one i just did above was 'verdi'. recognise it?

I have decided to bring in a new style of music.
Progressive Porn
BoW ChiKKa BoW WoW.. BOW ChIkkA BOW wOw

I tells ya.... its gonna go off....

^^^like a jews foreskin...
Boom-ching!
sorry, off topic but i had to.
that was for you ruski :)
p.s. "NRG fucking rocks man. it fuck-EN roX! dude, give me a hug... sweaty? ME? shit dude, give me some water! i'm fucking dehydrated man. oh crap... this water's fucking salty AS! Ewww... anyone got a chuppa-chup? chewy? Ohhhh, Midro is on! fuck-EN sik! man this place is go-EN OFF!!!"

I go out to dance. All I know is when someone like jason midro comes on I dance! I don't know whether he plays hard trance or nrg and I don't care. If I'm peaking, then thats what I want to here, a fast beat with an uplifting melody over the top. Of course its just personal opinion but as everyone seems to admit it gets everyone dancing and is that a bad thing? Now just kicking back and listening is a completley different matter, then variety is a must but hey I think hard trance/nrg whatever it is has its place.
Feel free to bag me I really don't care.

*Stands up and applauds stylin*
What a knock mate! While sounding like a begruntled old raver whos 'lost the magic', I still uphold that NRG is shit, it is commercial, and the people who like it are sheep! The way you laude your shite DJs makes me sick, a DJ is another person just like you and I. They GIVE to the scene and that deserves respect. What do you give, apart from criminally high door charges?
Conform and you will always be held in contempt by the leading edge artists of the world. We are few and you are many but we have the attitude.
p.s. I've noticed now that Sydney DJs are coming down to Bubble in Melb and they've put the price up cos of that! Hah hah!! Saw that coming a mile away.

situation:
[/i] Three kids and a mother are ordering ice creams from a mister whippy van, the first kid wants vanilla, the second, strawberry, the third, chocolate. The mother orders a cappucino ice cream. [/i]
Kid1: [e murphy tone] "THE ICE CREAM MAN IS COMING!!! THE ICE CREAM MAN IS COMING!!!
Kid2: "Chocolate looks like poo!"
kid3: "Strawberry is girlygilry pink"
[repeat variations of last two phrases ad infinitum]
Needing a mediator between there profound argument, Kid 2 and 3 get Kid 1 to taste test to see which is better. Kid 1 tries the two flavours and admits that both are different and interesting, but still prefers vanilla [he also manages to get a lick of his mothers cappucino flavour]. Kids 2 and 3 not accepting this answer resume their argument. Tiring of there whining crap, Mum gives them both a clip behind the ears [poetic license peeps ;) ]. Kids 2 and 3 are left bawling, whilst Kid 1 is left fattened, content, and caffeine buzzing like a midget on ritalin.
Most disparaging arguments I hear regarding NRG are based on the premises of "It's too simplistic, It's predictable, It's repetitive", unfortunately these arguments seem to apply to most electronica I've heard [except cutup, experimental, and some jungle]. Dance music is essentially music to dance to, a degree of repetitiousness is necessary whether that be a 140 house beat, or 2 step. The simplistic nature of some electronica is what really attracts me to it, I got into partying with minimal tech, I found this music unpretentious, and economical. Far too often I hear tracks that seem to assume greater layering = added complexity, while this is sometimes true, just laying a snare on the offbeat does not add complexity in my books, SIMPLICITY ROCKS!
As any of you who have posted here knows, I am a fair breaks nutter, not because I hate other music and want to attach myself to the ideals of being a breaks fan but because I like the music.
I went to my first NRG party last year and I must say the crowd and atmosphere was awesome [also seeing sugar is always a bonus]. Although I have not really found anything that has particularily grabbed me in NRG I can still enjoy myself without my facourite music [having your favourite all the time is boring, and detracts from its value]. So in the spirit of the give breaks a go thread,[and the positive responses it generated] I'm starting the Give NRG a go thread [i feel defiled ;) ]

OK... this thread is now over 100 responses, and will need to be closed soon. I don't think it's a good idea to make a "part 2" thread either because the last 50 responses have been repeats of things that have already been said earlier in the thread. If we started a new one the same thing would most likely happen.
So get your last words in, it'll be closed in a couple of days... :)

Since no avid supporters of NRG have argued my hard-to-take-but-true points, I'll leave it there.
PLUR
p.s. Don't let the drugs affect your personality - it's your personality that affects your drugs.

i can name a fuckload of different subtitles of electronica, and i can also name the ones i enjoy most on one hand. for someone like 'nads' to call me a sheep cos i like nrg is sad. i partly agree with what stylin is saying about pop music (for younger kids to grow out of, based on image rather than sound etc) and i do call people who like pop 'teenie boppers' etc.. and i would also go as far as saying that i 'hate' some genres of electronica... but i still wouldnt put someone down for listening to it. ive walked past the beatfix rooms in sublime many a time, heard the noise - yes its noise to my ears, not music - and thought 'shit how do people dance to that, let alone enjoy it', and ive hated the sound enough to have to move away, but i still wouldnt say my tastes are more superior to theirs.
i like the music on the Ministry of Sound Hard Nrg Volume 2 cd, mixed by nik fish. crap dj you say? i honestly dont give a shit. i like the songs, theyre uplifting, they make me feel good, i enjoy them, and i can dance to them (well sort of, in my unco-ordinated way :P).
if sublime and plastic are the best places on a friday night to hear this sort of music, then that is where im going to go (granted plastic is by far a more enjoyable experience, music and atmostphere wise).
if you dont like nrg and this sort of stuff, then dont go. go elsewhere, because the people who are going are the people who like this music and that is why the djs play it.
i really dont know a fucking thing about djing mixing or beat-whatevering, but if it sounds good to me ill listen and enjoy it. if i like the song i couldnt care less whos playing it.
fuck dunno what ive just rambled on about... but anyhow, stop putting down music you dont like and try projecting the stuff you do instead. there is absolutely no point to dissing others... whether youre informed or smarter or more mature or superior. if youre in the position where you need to name call others and their muscical tastes, then i think you are the one with the problem. keep it to yourself.
