Honestly, I love an opiate rush as much as the next girl (she says, with a lovely melting oxy under her tongue), but the occasional ER-given Dilaudid IV is enough for me. Just knowing that every so often (even if it's once every 3 years) I will get to experience that is enough for me NOT to ever try IVing at home. If it's the truth that you just want to know what it is like, once, then get yourself a shot of Dilaudid at the ER. I'm, er, "lucky" in that I have a nerve disease that is well-know to be THE most painful condition in medical literature, and it flares up every 18 months or so (as I age, the flares will be more intense and come closer together). When I'm in a full-on, screaming like a wounded animal, psychotic with pain flare, I don't enjoy the Dilaudid because A) it doesn't effing HELP and B) they have to give me so much that I'm at constant risk of stopping breathing (per ER staff) and that's just not fun. However, when I'm having a moderate flare-up, and I get a shot of Dilaudid...well, there is nothing in the entire world like it. Know what's even better? Being ever so slightly-to-moderately dope sick and getting an IV of Dilaudid. Oh Jesus...
For me, I can FEEL it moving through my veins, touching and lighting up and bathing every single cell in euphoria the intensity of which I cannot describe, but continue to try. That feeling....as it washes through your veins and makes every microscopic fiber of your body and soul feel on fire with joy and warmth and safety and sex and music and ocean-swimming and youth and running fast and your first GOOD kiss and eating buttery crab legs barefoot with your lover on the beach and lullabies and peonies and....it's just gooood. Or God.
But then you come home from the hospital and you know you must never ever EVER do that at home, to yourself, because if you DO, you will never again experience sex and music and ocean-swimming and youth and running fast and your first GOOD kiss and eating buttery crab legs barefoot with your lover on the beach and lullabies and peonies again, because instead, 10 years later, you will find yourself having replaced all of that with opiates. And then it's 10 years gone and it's too late to have kids and yeah, you're OK superficially, everyone thinks you are OK, but you don't seek out those REAL pleasure anymore because what's in the pill or the needle is easier and it's enough. But it's fucking NOT enough. And you gave up having kids. And you look around you and realize that, since you don't have kids, all you REALLY have to look forward to now is a slow decline. No one you love is on the way UP, everyone is on the way DOWN. Getting older, getting sicker, no milestones anymore, all the weddings and baby showers are over and all your fucking friends talk about is their kids and you can't exactly say "my oxycontin said 'i love you' for the first time today!" so yeah, I would think twice about IVing your drugs. Eventually, you'll break a bone or get appendicitis or your gall bladder will blow up and you'll get a needle full of Dilaudid in the ER and you'll know what it's all about. Meanwhile, you are 25 and have every choice in the world in front of you. Ten years slips by fucking FAST.
I'm the elusive one-time shooter. I shot 60mg of oxycodone, knowing I was going for a world of trouble, but I just didn't really like it. Thankfully. My nasal or oral dose was normally 90mg at this time. Of course a veteran helped me through it. I guess I was expecting a rush like dilaudid (had in the hospital a few times), but it was nothing like that. It was like I snorted them or whatever, but I guess since I didn't do my "ritual", it felt kinda hollow. I am lucky, cause most people *love* it. But I thought the myth outweighed the reality...
However, although I only do oxy about 5-6 times a month now, I obsess over it by doing things like reading threads like this, and planning when I'll do it next, etc. Sure, I don't have a physical addiction, and that's a GREAT thing, but it still runs my life, pretty much.
