No it comes from a shading effect as a result of distortions against of the grain of the wood. The body is made from solid mahogany and then the top is layered with two peices of Maple.

The maple has what is called 'flame', which is a result of the distortion. After that a multi step staining process takes place and its via this process that the distortions in the maple develop a 3 dimensional type effect. A different colour of stain will produces different subtle shade changes thanks to the flaming of the maple.
