Television The Wire

i've noticed that the same people who didn't like seasons two and four tend to dislike carcetti's angle and i'm guessing the newspaper angle of this season, as well. those are the fans who want the show to be about the drug game and the DTs investigating.

I dislike the political angle but very much enjoy everything about the schools/ education system that was featured so prominently in season 4. I guess it's because I am a teacher and can easily relate to that side of things. Perhaps if I was more knowledgeable about politics and such I would be more interested in that portion of the show.

And when I say I dislike Carcetti and that whole side of things, it is only compared to the other aspects of the show which I love so much. It isn't as if I dislike those parts enough where I wouldn't watch the show or something; I am just nitpicking. Even the "bad" parts of The Wire are better than most television. :)

the wire is such a great show. it does kinda portray baltimore in a bad light, like its some drug and murder capital...which it is....dont get me wrong. but it seems like anyone not from here who sees it would be scared to come here. (its not that bad)

im interested to see where this season is going to head...

I think it actually portrays Baltimore in a pretty safe light to a certain extent. It appears to be very dangerous if your in the game (or a witness, which is extremely unlikely) but it shows non-urban white people walking through the hood unharmed in multiple episodes.

you realize in most "bad" neighborhoods 99% of people white or black go about their business without hassle, right?

baltimore, brooklyn or north philly are some of the nastier places i've ever been and i've never really had a problem. the only problem i ever had was in college when my roommate picked a fight with a bum (i blame the roids for that one).

my uncle used to live in baltimore a few years back when it was a really scuzzy city and he got mugged twice in nice neighborhoods when he was stumbling home drunk from the bars, though. its all about how you act. if you mind your own business and don't make yourself a target you usually have nothing to worry about.

I agree. I've walked by myself through the most dangerous neighborhoods of Miami and nothing has ever happened to me, and my dad has spent his entire day working in the inner city for the past 20 years. I was just saying that the show doesn't portray Baltimore in as negative a light as it does the game.

Thanks for posting that. The Wire is so fucking excellent and the actings so good it's crazy to hear the actors speak as their true selves. Especially Chris and Bubbles. Omar on the other hand, seems like kind of a scary cat in real life too.

He'll be scared in a future episode... Dude's lucky to have made it out alive.
It'll be interesting to see if they kill him off. I get the feeling he'll be the one left standing, I think Marlo's gonna get dropped.

Season 5:

Just watched episode 2 on HBO On Demand (this On Demand a week before the airing idea is awesome!), and it was definitely better than episode 1, just as I assumed it would be.

gotta love this show...:D

Nice link.

Dookie is starting his singing career! hahah

edit: I think people protesting the show are crazy...the show is truthful, and doesn't glorify violence or crime in my opinion. It shows the good and bad of urban life in very realistic way. We need more shows like The Wire, and less mindless reality shows that are completely devoid of substance or actual reality..The Wire makes people think, reality TV makes us devolve

oh man, i agree 100%, couldn't of said it better myself. the wire is the only tv drama i can think of that has mostly african-american actors cast. from government, police to the street. those people that were protesting should be applauding it instead !

but making people think HURTS man. walking around in circles shouting slogans is so much easier. and when we get home we can have some mcdonald's and vote for that skinny gay boy on american idol.

Thanks for the tip on the on demand deal. I guess that's in reaction to the season being leaked on the internet? I liked the newly produced short clips too, especially the one with circa '85 Omar giving the man his $15 back. I'm so tempted to just download all the episodes, but out of respect for the people that make the show I think I'm gonna watch it as intended.

I tried watching the Pilot episode a couple of weeks ago but I got extremely bored and antsy .:\ It just didnt grab me the way a show I end up liking usually does from the beginning. Is it just me? Should I give it another chance? Does it get better? Convince me WIRE fans!

Its a great epic series. It does take a while to figure out the main characters and get an idea of the sweetness.

The best HBO shows are long, drawn out epics. I constantly recommend them to people, but I realize 3/4 of people won't put in the time to get three - four episodes deep and have that "Goddamn!" moment with it. I can't blame anyone for not doing so.

But, the groundwork laid in the first few episodes is borne out over the course of the season long story arc, and the more extended series long arc of shows like The Wire, Deadwood, etc.
