Imagine you’re passing a phone box and the phone rings. You answer it, to be told, “Your money’s in the bag on the floor – 30 grand as agreed”. Sure enough, in front of you is a bag stuffed with bundles of cash, there for the taking. How do you react? It’s one of many hidden-camera moral conundrums that Stephen Fry and the makers of this series pitch at random members of the British public. The reaction of two young women to the phone box cash is wonderful and the agonies two blokes go through are a joy to watch.
Not all the stunts work quite so well but it’s interesting seeing how long it takes people to intervene to stop a racist waiter (played by an actor) insulting customers (also actors). The idea is to show we Brits aren’t as morally depraved as we’re painted. It does nothing of the sort, but it does unearth the odd quiet hero.
