The 'What Have You Bought Recently?' Thread - Because Summer Is a Show Off

Hmmm, i know what you mean but i just dont have that kind of money for a 'proper sports car', besides i'd probably write it off within a very short time. I like the Audis as they just represent "quality" to me, plus they are more practical and versatile than an all out uncompromising sports car.

You'd probably spend more on a fast Audi than you would on a 370Z or a Cayman. A three year old Audi S5 would set you back a good 20k.

I think a 2 litre diesel Audi A4 may be the way to go if you want sporty but comfortable. Prices have dropped a lot in recent years and the pre-facelift models still look relatively sharp. You can pick up a 2006 model for around 4 grand. Lots of torque too which means plenty of grunt for when you're in a hurry!

Cheers for the info. Ive not really looked into any of it in any detail so far, the whole thing is just a distant dream atm, as i have a lot more pressing and usefull/sensible things to spend my money on, all depending on how long i manage to hold down a job or find a job that is very easy to hold down because it fits me better. Something like a nature reserve warden would be my dream job, but rather than just dreaming about it, i should look into how to go about getting jobs like that.

Just got a half decent set of bluetooth headphones from Sainsburys for £15 (down from 40), surprisingly good build quality and comfy to :)

Bose - bluetooth speaker <3 (sound dock or something?)

Quality is amazing, even when on full there is no distortion. It fits in your man bag (if you have a skinny pug) - 7hr from one charge, yeah built for the old Iphones but the sound <3

These were the Goodmans ones, £60 elsewhere ATM.

I mainly use them for listening to audio books at work or music thats in MP3 format, these ones sound pretty good certainly more than 15 quids worth.

I never use headphones at home but then I scaled back my hi-fi stuff when we had kids, Cerwin Vegas on stands arent compatible with toddlers and the sub used to shake the staircase! regret getting rid of the Music Fidelity amp though it may not have had a remote and the select buttons were stupidly hard to use but it kicked some arse.

I'm no audiophile, I don't have the space to setup a system to make it worth buying expensive stuff, my old Cambridge Audio amp it OK and for the money the Wharfdale Diamonds are surprisingly crisp but inevitably lack bottom end. All my cables are hand made and silver soldered, simple stuff even down to the balls of bluetack under the speakers make a difference for pennies.

Ha - I've had the same amp/speaker setup for over a decade now, Wharfedales and a Denon amp - so not nearly in audiophile territory(got a 'The Streets' sticker on the amp which stubbornly resists removal. A reminder. A warning from history:D)

Still works ok, but over the course of moving house a few times I lost a few of the bits from the back of the speakers, so the +/- are literally connected by paperclips. Having said that, can't help but look down on people who seem to think some crappy all-in-one job, even with 32 types of BASS, is acceptable.

Soldering and stuff is something I spent many years of my life doing as part of my job so I'm OK with cables and such.

The Cambridge Amp is pretty good, I run the TV through it as well and the Wharfdales are more than adequate for the volumes I use them for. Before we had kids and lived in another house I had the room to setup a system properly, since I listened to mainly electronic music I went for a bigger sound, hefty Cerwin Vegas on aggregate filled stands, wooden floor ( made a lot of difference) active subwoofer and a Music Fidelity B1 Amp, it had some real punch and plenty of sub base. I've never spent big moey on stuff, I got the Music Fidelity amp for nowt because it was faulty, easy fix and the build quality was better than anything I've seen.

It's well wroth getting good cables, it's something lots of people forget. Quality cable and connectors are way cheaper than premade ones but soldering is more difficult than it looks if you want a decent job done, I always use silver solder for audio leads, it's not a huge amount of money and you can get it in small amounts from maplins.

Just set these headphones up and they are pretty dam good, Sainburies may have made an error as everywhere else they are £59.99, I got a pair for Mrs A as well so I'm in her good books ATM

A new pair of blue Adidas Samba Originals and a dark blue G-Star coat. I'll always buy clothes over drugs, I'd prefer to take drugs while wearing nice clothes as it doesn't give off the baghead vibe you know

good cables yes, expensive audiophile grade ones.... no.

I actually own a pair of Bose heaphones, from the quiet comfort series, one of the few products from them that are actually quite decent, there practical iphone products are also good if your on the move. There sound is not accurate though and some components can be below average in quality, but then saying that, some of the better brands are obviously even more expensive.

I wouldnt buy anything from Bose unless it was a pair of quiet comforts or an iphone dock or something along those lines, but if you like what your hearing then thats all that matters, i am trained in sound engineering where bose is slated to the core, but i have met a few closet cases with pair of quiet comforts for home use. It can be quite common also for some intelligent engineers to use Bose in there studios, this will give the impression that your hearing the sound back as if your an average listener at home who is not an audiophile, you crank up that volume and then listen with your ears, when it sounds good on a bose and not distorted your good to go, and it should sound good and not distorted on most sound systems. True story.

That does sound a bit patronising really, but it isnt intended, thats the most common use of bose with sound proffesionals lol, but i love my QC's, and i think the portable iphone stuff is nice.

This..... all that aligned copper crystal bullshit. From memory the last phone cable I made cost about £30 (maybe) most of that was the connectors, never use those cheap thin black ones that come for free they are genuinely shit.

Speaker cable is much the same, the cost of the big brands with the fancy plastic sleeves is obscene, you can get good quality copper cable from a 'good' shop for a fraction of the price, I terminate the AMP end to gold banana plugs because the copper oxidises over time but I'm a bit fussy like that

@DD, I'm not saying that better kit can equal better sound quality, that Musical Fedility Amp was beautifully put togther, toroudal transformers and quality to the point that even the PCB track lengths were the same per channel. I've been round electonics for more than 25 years and have had a hand in a few 90s systems.

What I am saying is that buying expensive kit alone wonlt give you great sound, even if we put aside what kind of sound profile you are after. Cram a big system into a small room where the speaker positions are compromised and it will sound shit, use cheap interconnects and you may as well have brought kit at half the price. Play low res MP3s as your source and it's never going to sound any good. Getting in deeper mismatch your AMP and speakers and you could have just wasted a whole load of cash.

I see more expensive systems brought more because people think it looks flash than I have ones that have been given the enviroment they really need to appreciate the quality. In my pre child days not only did the carpet go but all the furnishing apart from one leather sofa, anything that produced secondary vibration was also removed. I chose to run it clean so no EQ but I could have used a pink noise system if I had dissapeared that far up my arse.

I'm ot accusing you of such but there is a great deal of snobbery around Hi-Fi mainly from those that are more interested in telling you how much money they have spent than music. My point was about the ability to get a decent system together for small money by buying used separates and making your own cables rather than letting a Hi-Fi shop fleese you for stuff you just don't need for your application.

The difference between a £5 HDMI cable and a £30+ one is clearly visible and audible for connecting up 40" HD TVs to whatever box or soundsystem you are using. The quality of the cable can make an enormous difference IME.
im no expert, but in my experience its also a case of durability. this is of course dependant on where you got your cales more than anything else, but for where im at, getting the cheapest cable is almost guaranteed to give you a single use out of it.

then like i said, its probably more about looking around and picking the best offer than price alone

That makes no sense, a digital signal is binary. Either the binary code is transmitted or it isn't (in which case it will present itself as pixelation/freezes rather than a noticeable differnce in picture quality). It's like an on/off switch, either the information is getting through or it isn't.
