The 'What Have You Bought Recently?' Thread - Because Summer Is a Show Off

Renting a flat from... TODAY! I get the keys later on and can start moving my stuff in.

Is it bad that I'm being sentimental about which drug to take first, in my new home? =D

Just spent £17 on some scales. Was dithering between two but went with the ones that were £1 more expensive because 1) they'd sold more and 2) they had MUCH faster estimated delivery and I'll probably need them for the beginning of next week. Optimistic maybe with royal fail but the post date said by Tuesday so I'll hold them to that.

Need to make sure my mother doesn't find these ones as losing £17 would probably be enough to make me cry. Not that she got rid of the ones she found before as I found them in a cupboard yesterday but they weren't amazing and I'm too much of a coward to try and take them back. And the ones I have now are shit so long overdue purchase really.

Woo exciting. More excited by the first thing I'll hopefully be using them to weigh but I havent paid for that yet so it doesnt count as a purchase.

Just out of interest what did your mum think the old ones were for? Did she realise why you would want mg scales? I know when my mum was still here I would have probably made up something ridiculous like I wanted to weigh precious metals or something......and she probably would of believed it....bless her

Yeah well I might've been able to blag it but she found other drug related stuff too so it was a bit obvious. Nevermind, it all blew over pretty quickly and as it turns out that particular chain of events ended up benefitting me so no real loss (other than a £5 pair of scales ;)). Was unfortunate though as I'd only bought them a few days previously and had only used them once.

That's a shame. Never mind you'll soon have some better ones.

My mum would believe just about anything I said when I was akid. I remember when I was about 15 getting shit faced on cheap cider and throwing up everywhere and telling her I'd bough some dodgy pick & mix from the corner shop and they must have been out of date or something. .......and she believed it. My sister was like...... wtf? mum are you stupid, he's just pissed!!..but no not me, her little boy.....he wouldn't do that!! haha!!.......god I miss my mum so much 8)

Anyway, take care with those scales and be safe Summer :)

I went to Berlin last year for a conference run by Mercedes (cos they make our Ambulances in Britain). It was a lovely city though I didn't get to see much (don't mention the war though)......

I know, too much about the war already.
But culturally speaking there´s a lot happening. As they often tell, Berlin has established itself as a popular entertainment center in Europe.
Although at this time of the year it´s a bit dark. Too cloudy..
I don´t mind though. I wish the weather would be more like in Ottawa. Less humid, more snowy..

It's a beautiful place. German people are really lovely folks.

WW2 history is my passion. I've got practically a library of books. I really wanted to see the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag , the location of the Fuhrer Bunker etc. but didn't get the time.

My main area of interest is Eastern front from around Starlingrad up to Kursk and then East Prussia invasion and Western Front from D-Day up to Battle of the Bulge and Hurtgen Forest battle...although I'm interested in other areas/periods to.

Not fussed on the pacific campaigns much though....could never get into it

I bought this for my brother in law's secret santa gift. And sunglasses for the mrs birthday

can you really have a favorite period of a war?

Of course you can. I'm talking from a history standpoint as it's vital not to forget the sacrifices others made for our freedom. "Favorite" doesn't mean you actually like the horrific actions that took place.

Any historian can have a "favorite" period of history but it doesn't mean they think that what happened in that period was in any way desirable from a personal view.

I think you've taken the word "favorite" out of context

Me too! And I agree with your last point, obviously. I bet you've read all the Beevors, right? :D

I've read so many WW2 books over the past 5 years that I've lost count. After exhausting the local libraries of "traditional" histories of the war, I also became very interested in the post-war period. What happened in Europe after hostilities ceased was, especially in Germany itself, often more horrifying than the previous 6-7 years were. It's a period of time that is often forgotten about or glossed over, and I don't think any countries on either side came out of it looking good.

I can thoroughly recommend this one, if you haven't read it:

I think my fascination with WW2 began with me trying to understand why an entire country apparently went insane, and seemed to go along with Hitler's plans willingly. Having a deeper understanding of those early years gives you quite a good perspective when we see flashes of history repeating itself in the present.

So here's another good one:

If you can recommend anything I might have missed, please tell me! :D

I think you mean that you've USED the word "favourite" (because I'm English, and thought you were too for some reason) out of context.

You could have asked, "what period of war are you most interested in?"
