The travel thread

I've not met him, he owns a travel business in Hanoi. Found him by googling motorbike rental ages ago, then found out he also sells bikes.

I wouldn't advise parting with any cash until you are there and can see the bike in person. :)

You got your bike license yet?

I want to go here :)

My dad tells me it's amazing. He went when it was super expensive though, couldn't afford to eat out or drink. Just eating ham sandwhiches for a week and apparently even that cost an arm and a leg.

Got your travel insurance sorted eDDe?

I've got mines thru M&S, really good deal on a years cover when I booked mines not sure if it's still the same now.

i've always wanted to go to iceland too. i'd love to hire a Hummer and go on the rampage up those mountains. ;)

direct flights from Aberdeen to Reykjavik too, how intriguing. :D

perfect bike for vietnam edde, what is it, a royal enfield or summat? they are also ubiquitous in india. i take it the idea is to sell it at the end of your trip?

I'll try and sell it, but doubt I'll put much effort into it unless I'm strapped for cash.

Will try and cross over to Cambodia with it, even though I don't have the right documents too. But if I get caught and they think I stole it to sell across the boarder, a small bribe won't go amiss. If all goes well, I'll just give it to some orphanage.

Naw, its a restored Minsk, ie. AK47 bike

Remind me eDDe whats your plan again (where you visiting etc) and why haven't you gotten a visa for Cambodia? It's a lovely place I would love to spend more time there.

I'll get a visa for Cambodia before I go, but you can't take motorcycles or cars across the boarder unless your residence is in Vietnam (or wherever you're crossing from) without special documentation that is a pain in the ass to get from what I've read, and even then people have commented its much better to slip a $20 bribe.

So you've not sorted your visas yet? I'd get it done asap so there all in place.

Am I to assume you've not passed your bike test / got a lisence yet as well?

Don't need a license in Vietnam, but I've got my best friend's mum's boyfriend to give me some lessons on how to use the clutch and what not, I feel pretty confident riding a bike.

Only just got my new passport, so everything is being bought tomorrow, tickets visas insurance and what not.

Although, what kind of visas do I need? With a return ticket you normally get a 30day pass upon checkout of the airport and at boarder crossings.

Nah you need visas mate, I've got them in my passport as proof and I was only there for a few days in each place. :)

You have to apply for them before hand for Thailand and Vietnam and Cambodia can be bought when you get there though I'd get it done before hand as it can take a while when everyone has to fill out forms, join queues then your passport gets taken away and passed down a line of officials who all do 'something' before it reaches the last boy who stands on the desk, looks at the picture and takes the piss out of you as he shouts out your name and you go forward to get it. It's quite funny and an experience but you can probably avoid all the fannying about if you get it done before hand. Though this will only apply if your flying into Cambodia which you're not. :D

LULZ

what could possibly go wrong, eh?

fuck sake. :|

exactly - as a minimum.

look into countersteering, using the rear brake to control your speed, know which feet to put on the fucking ground and when... and i don't just mean google it.

eDDe, take some lessons, pass the test, get the bloody lisence. Doing things half harsed and assuminmg you'll be fine is daft. You've never seen traffic till you visit Vietnam, it is fuckin intense. There is no law or order on the roads, it's every man for himself. People don't drive sensibly or in the apporporiate manner they just tear about like lunatics. Hundreds of bikes crammed onto the roads weaving in and out and cutting in front of each other I'd imagine it would be difficult for someone with years of experience driving on those roads let alone somebody who learnt everything on the internet. 8)

This is a bad idea mate, do some lessons!

Its mainly for my travel on the open roads, won't be doing much in the inner cities by bike.

Don't have time to get a licence, but I can do a figure of 8 so might take my test out there ;)

I saw that episode of Top Gear too if that's what your talking about, was funny. Clarckson falling off looked painful. 8o

When they turned them into boats was good as well. :)

Top Gear while being the sort of thing I should hate (not into cars) presented by 3 pompous toffs and being so blatently scripted can actually be hilarious and great to watch. :)
