The Travel Thread - Second Destination

Fair enough.

Anyway, bothered about that as it's still shite. It's like coming to England and saying "i can't wait to go to Birmingham. "

8)

You could say that about anywhere then list loads of downsides but it doesn't matter as I want to go and I look forward to it.

every message you quote by me you add the roll eyes smiley face into it, pretty patethic 8)

have you been to the usa before spade? there are thousands of places worth going to besides LA! even if you wanted to stay in california you could try san francisco or san diego, santa barbra, or even go up north to washington state and visit seattle... bleh, whatever youre into...

Girlfriend said LA was shite too, no soul to it. Couldn't wait to get back to Vegas, ha.

Because you talk so much shite. ;)

No I haven't been.

The reason we're going to LA is because that's the path Air New Zeland takes, they stop there anyway on route so may as well spend a bit of time there. Would be silly not to. :p

Oooooh, this thread is just what I was looking for!

My beloved Europeans, I have a question for you!

There is a good chance I might be going to Montenegro in a couple of months for family matters. Of course, me being me, I'll be backpacking all around the area! Although Montenegro, Bosnia, and Northwestern Italy will be my primary areas of interest, I am hoping to incorporate all of the Balkan peninsula but on a short time/budget, unfortunately.

So here is my question: If you had to recommend just ONE place to visit in the following countries, which would be it? The countries are: Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria (beyond Sofya), Romania, and Northern Greece.

With Northern Greece, can you give me tips for "shoestring" kind of travel? I'd appreciate it :)

----

eDDe: I have been to Tel Aviv once, and the rest of the country many, many times. Like others have mentioned in this thread, ALL Israelies I've met on my travels seem to think their (*cough*MY*cough*) country is the next ibiza or whatever. It isn't. No matter how you put it, war isn't pretty (and rather boring, too). While it is unlikely that you'll be in danger yourself, you'll be seeing it all around you, even the daily conversations of the people. Telaviv itself doesn't have much in terms of history, but the rest of the country is loaded with it. I would have recommended Jerusalem a decade ago when it used to be a magical place, but these days it is a ghost of its former glories now that all the Palestinians (who made the majority of the merchants and inhabitants) have been scared away (if not plain kicked out).

I would recommend NOT going to Bulgaria, the people are rude, abnoxious, arrogant, unhelpful, unfriendly and will attempt to scam you whenever possible. I've only visited Sofia, Bourgas, Kraimore and Sunny Beach though, but all were the same and none particularly amazing or nice.

Ive met many Bulgarian people despite not having been to Bulgaria yet and every one of them has been really nice and friendly, in fact I still keep in touch with quite a few of them. Some of the women there are fitttt too!

I also know people who have visited Bulgaria on holidays and loved it - of course crime exists but this is the same no matter where you go.. just dont walk around the streets with a big ginger mullet and a bum bag and you should be fine.

You have to remember that Spade is looking forward to visiting LA, so you may want to keep that in mind when taking advice from him. :\

No it's not. At all.

As you've not been to LA, how would you know??? ;)

That's sort of fair enough.

But it's still shite. I'd recommend either driving North to Santa Barbara and the Big Sur, or south towards San Diego (although i've never done the second option). LA itself will bore you (well most normal peopls :p) in about 6 hours.

I also met a ton of cool as fuck Bulgarian people at a big couchsurfing meetup but anyone who works in shops, bars, restaurants, hostels, clubs, drives a taxi / bus, is ticket conductor on a train or works in any sort of service / tourism job is a complete and utter cunt and you'll be encountering these folk all day every day. There wasn't one single person who even attempted to be pleasant or helpful and they'd either ignore us (even though we wanted to buy something from there shop / bar etc) or rip us off by charging more than the stated price or short change us. They didn't even attempt to do it on the sly just very blatently then they had the cheek to be rude about it when we challenged it! Some of the hostility we encountered was unimagineable, I would never be that rude to anyone let alone a stranger for no reason. And we weren't alone all the other travellers we spoke to said they'd found the same.

I never mentioned crime btw.

^ I'll definitely keep this in mind as I can believe you thanks to my experience in other countries that start with a T ;).

That said, Bulgaria, like the countries I mentioned in my original questions, will be more of a pass-through destination. I'll be going there for basically one (maybe two) reasons: the first is attempting to attend a performance of traditional Bulgarian music; and the second - given enough time and money - would be taking a ferry to the Ukrain (although I could just choose to go to Istanbul and do that from there instead...).

Keep the suggestions rollin' ;).

Bosnia was a favourite of my Balkan trip though the people were still utter scoundrels. Again rude, unfriendly, always on the scam etc.

Mostar & Sarajevo are amazing places though. :)

Just make a point of being rude to them when they come to Scotland. Oh, you do, fucking Eastern Europeans stealing our jobs!

Not saying you do, but a majority of Scottish people I know seem to think so.

.

No prizes for guessing that you are talking about turkey?

I found the turkish one of the most welcoming countries i have ever been to - apart from immigration who throw your passport at you.

Albania/ Montenegro I would say dude, although I think that the Carpathians alone make some of Romania worth visiting. The part that's traditionally always been Hungarian, until the Germans and Ruski's fucked it up last century. Lot's of history.

Thailand. Seeing as he's been living there.

No prizes for you that's for sure. ;)

Firstly how many Scottish folk do you actually know? :p

And no I don't want to be rude to them. I don't know any Scottish folk who think that, it's you English that do. ;)

Says the Brit

I'm Scottish thank you very much and we're known to be one of the friendliest nations on the planet. :)
