The Travel Thread - Second Destination

Hahah, gold and sofas, a handy level of diversification should the credit curnch relaly bite!!!

Hehe.
I fly home on 1st April, so not long left. Viet visa expires on the 23rd, then I have 7 days to see PP and SR then get to Bangkok to fly home.

Would have more cash but the door 2 door fundraising people haven't paid my commission and someone owes me money.

Oh and the heroin and yabba was bollocks. Tourist shit but was free because I'd bought opium off him (which was also shit and I complained).

eDDe top salesmen scammed by the door to door cowboys. :D

How much you spend so far? How long you been away for?

Went away with 2k spending money, with the hopes of having 150+ 275 being paid into my account while I was away.

Think I'm going to skip Cambodia this trip and do it when I come back in October/November as I don't want to rush the south without giving it a chance, 2 days 1 night in each place isn't fun.

I don't know why the top gear team had so many problems. They had 600 pounds to spend on bikes and then the BBC wanted to stop paying for all their repairs. Well I paid $300 USD for my bike (cheaper outside of Hanoi) and the 3 major breakdowns I've had has only cost me a maximum of 70,000VND with the cheapest being 12,000VND to repair.

Oh I'm in Da Nang now, my week in Hue was great :D Used Couchsurfing for the first time to great success.
Hoi Van Pass, yeh its good. Shame that on my way down the otherside I was in the shadow of the mountain and it was near pitch black. Think my first mountain pass had more of an overall take your breath away drive while Hoi Van had certain areas that just bought a tear to your eye.

Told you it was better to take things slowly, if you rush you don't see more you see less. ;)

I'm getting in my car and chasing the nice weather across Europe next week:)

Holland via France and Belgium, then I might or might not drive down to Prague. I want to be gone for 5-10 days. Very flexible.

Sounds cool jude. Nice wee road trip.

You still making a living playing Blackjack?

Don't plan on visiting Amsterdam this time, was there in December. I want to drive round the more remote countryside and maybe stop in Eindhoven for a night.

That's one option anyhow but the temperature there is only about 5c at the moment.

Looks much more temperate down in Sicily;) Rac website tells me it's 1500 miles away and will have a carbon footprint of half a ton. Plus there's alps and tunnels and stuff:D

Edit: Still am Spade, I play for a couple of days a month. Think it's best that way.

And you make enough money in a couple days to finance trips as well as live comfortably? That's not too shabby at all. :)

Bah, some odd laws in 'Nam.

The guy who hosted me in Da Nang was paid a visit by the police this morning because its illegal to have foreigners stay in your house. They only know this because we used his address for my visa extension.

Was supposed to go back to Da Nang tonight and stay at his place but I'll stay in Hoi An so we can go to the station tomorrow morning and sort it out.

^ eDDe, because its a (sort of) commie country, they have to protect the workers, epsecially the sofa salesmen. If they think you've got a permanent residence, they'll be worried that you are going to try and sell sofas over there. :)

I wouldn't bother visiting the station mate, you'll end up jailed and raped. ;)

Just give it a miss.

We don't have to go down, they just said don't do it again.

The reason they came is because there's no way to check if I'm an illegal immigrant or not. The hotels all upload your visa number to an online government website thingy, and because my host isn't government certified.. well.

We're only going to try and get permission for me to stay there, because I can now prove I have a valid visa.

Oh yeah, Kid, have you had any experience with changing return flight dates with Etihad?
I think its going to cost me an arm and a leg since I had a promotional flight so might have to pay the difference, but I've got no choice and will have to borrow from home some how.

Or.. anyone think I could pay a doctor to declare me too ill to travel, I know I can do that with a bit of cash easily enough, but will it work when it comes to my insurance paying for flight date change?

Dunno mate, but i'd changed tickets for a very small fee before even when on dirt cheap promo fares. Inly problem you might have is i doubt Etihad have an office where you are, so prob an expensive phone call for you.

I've emailed them and I need to call the Bangkok office as that's where I fly home from.

Thankfully I have a Vietnamese sim so its dirt cheap (your first 3 top ups are doubled, and even then 150k VND lasts for 50 minutes to England).

I'm off tomorrow! Getting a ferry to Calais and driving to Davos to stay in a hostel before spending Tuesday driving some famous Alpine passes:)

Then on to Milan on Tuesday evening, and the rest is as yet unplanned.

If I don't post back by the weekend then chances are I died in a fireball%)

SHM should be home by now. Where are yoooooooooouuuuu?

Hope you arrived home safely and are basking in the warm afterglow of your trip. More pics and stories please. :)

eDDe's latets travel blog entry...

Due to my old employer not paying my commission (fucking cunts), another cunt owing me some money, and a cock up with Vietnamese banks putting money back into my account (I should have withdrew it as soon as I noticed) then letting me think I'm doing ok then taking it back and leaving me with 28 pounds, with only 8 pounds available to withdraw today (ATMs don't go that low).

Spending ridiculous amounts calling Etihad Airways to change my flights (which I haven't done yet) didn't help either.

So, I'm stuck in Da Nang with 400k VND in my wallet, which will be used to pay the mechanic (new chain, gears...), and no way to get to Bangkok by Tuesday morning for my flight home.

So do I get on my bike and head to Nha Trang then Saigon and then fly to Bangkok for the 7th April (when I'm trying to change my flight too), which I can only afford by selling my bike once in Saigon. But this means taking a risk with not knowing if I can get my flight changed.. what's the rules these days about missing your flight when you're insured but with no way of getting to the airport in time?

Maybe I can get a doctor to declare me unfit to travel? But I think my insurance runs out the day after I'm supposed to return (2nd) and I'm pretty sure people have tried this before.

This is pretty fucking stressful for me and my friend, Khoi, whose house I've been staying at and I'd be even further behind if I didn't have him as a translator for the mechanic!

Well.. Do I take the risk and head off into the sun, only being able to check if I can change my flight when I'm out of Da Nang and subsequently away from any airports of train stations?

Hmm, just remembered that the trains to Saigon today have sold out (because of the festival) and even if I get one tomorrow I won't make it to Bangkok for my flight (unless my flight is 8pm not am.. I can't remember).

Got to wait a few more hours until the Etihad office opens in London (Bangkok one is closed all weekend), if I can change my flight then everything is simple, I just need some cash from you guys :D
If I can't change my flight but my flight is 8pm then everything is sort of simple but pretty tight, and I'd still need cash from you guys :)
If I can change my flight to the 7th April, I can rough it/couchsurf to Saigon/sell my body and then buy a cheap flight to Bangkok and get my flight home, costing me only $50 maybe.

Deleting the banking details won't do him any good, how will anyone donate? ;)

He posted the details up on a public blog for all to see, he obviously isn't too concerned.

I've decided as flights from Oz to NZ are cheap I will be visiting there on my next trip too.
