The Travel Thread - I am lovely and respectful to all in my path PLUR <3 xxxxx

Which place do you fancy? It'd be New York for me I reckon. Miami is probably full of posers (might suit you? :p), KL is fucking dire and boring BUT would be great for accessing the rest of SE Asia and Australia is over-rated. New York sounds fucking magic though.

Turned that company down, don't like the kind of underhand sales tactics they use.

Just booked flights for my trip in south east asia.

Booked the Qantas flights to Bangkok last month, but decided last week we will also have to book flights to get around S.E Asia

Purchased a Discovery Airpass which allows me to change dates of travel free of charge.

Travelling ,,

Bangkok to Chiang Mai- Chang Mai to Luang Prabang- Vientiane- Siem Reap.

1047 miles of travel for £260. Im happy with that considering I phoned the same company last week and they told me it would be £354. I also looked into booking all those flights separately and it was £370.

Could have done it on trains and buses for about £40 and it would have been much more fun and memorable too. Travelling overland is brilliant and kind of the whole point of travel...no?

The short answer to that is No.

The point of travel is to get from one place to another. I dont subscribe to this bullshit idea that for it to be real travel man you have to be cooked up in some shitty bus full of livestock for 3 days to get to your destination. My Che Guevara T-shirt and Jean Paul Sarte boook might get ruined along on the way. 8)

Honestly, for me its about seeing as much of the place as I can in the 9 weeks I have there.

Buses full of livestock, hardly. You wouldn't need to go on any 3 day journeys either. So the actual journey it's self is pointless to you is it? You don't want to see the Asian countryside, just zip from main tourist area to main tourist area seeing nothing in between?

Whatever floats your boat mate but you're missing out big time.

Honestly, for me its about seeing as much of the place as I can in the 9 weeks I have there.

But you're not gonna see as much as the area of possible though are you, you'll see plenty of airport departure lounges and clouds though and waist whole days going to airports, queuing up, checking in etc when you could spend them cruising through the countryside seeing unbeleivable scenery and how the locals live out in the sticks. Nine weeks is plenty time to have a decent travel around, especially considering you don't seem to want to see that many places, at least if you went overland you could catch some cool places on route to your intended destinations.

From what youve posted here you seem to know more about my travel plans than me.

Looks like I will be flying all over S.E Asia and not seeing any of the country. 8)

You posted a few posts up where you intended to go, it's hardly very many destinations. It's just cities as well. Based on what you've posted you'll see just 6 places in 9 weeks.

No, you assumed that was my entire trip. :p

When I arrive in Siem Reap im going to travel to Phnom Penh by boat. After that I reckon its going to be travel by train and bus. I arranged to travel by air for the first leg of the trip, since I felt the area to cover was going to take up alot of the time we have there.

Also going to Vietnam, and back along the coast of Cambodia. Back to Bangkok and heading south to the islands by train.

The area you planned to travel wouldn't take that long tbh, Bangkok to Chang Mai in about 12hrs (can do it overnight on the train), Chang Mai you'd head over to the east of Thailand and take a boat into Laos (meant to be quite an experience), Luang Prabang you'd take a bus for a few hours to Vang Vieng (you'd be stupid to miss this place, when both me and SHM agree it's a highlight you know it's good) then another 5hrs or so by mini van to Vientiane. Peice of piss, no airlines required.

Im going to Vang Vieng.

Although im flying to Luang Prabang, my flight to Siem Reap is from Vientiane. So I will be travelling down from Luang Prabang to Vientiane by bus no doubt.

The flights are booked though and im glad of that. Hopefully no minvans will be used at any point in the trip.

You indicated above those were the places you were flying to with your airpass. You'll be taking a minivan alright, from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng and from there to Vientianne, it's the only way to get those places. You'll be glad you did because the scenery is out of this fucking world, gorgeous lush countryside as you wind through the mountains going through wee Laotian villages that time seems to have forgot. Give me that over a shody asian airline anyday.

Plenty of buses/coaches go from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng and VV to Vientiane.

Im starting to wonder if you actually did leave Dundee:p

Ive already looked into how I will be getting between Luang Prabang and Vientiane and buses are available daily.

GlasgowE it' sounds like you now what you want to do and how you intend to do it .
I'm sure you'll have agreat time .
As far as Asia is concerned i've only been 2 Sri lanka n it was fantastic I flew to Kandy watched atest match n spent some time out in the moors enjoying The Budhist temples my favourite being the Lankatilaka Temple.
I then flew down to Columbo to catch the 2nd test and enjoyed every minute of it.
Columbo was extremely volatile at the time , but fortunatley i was oblivious to this.
As had i of known the full extent of the situation it would have definatley curtailed what i did.

Have a good time mate.

Cheers!

Cant fuckin wait to be honest. Its weird leaving my job etc and just going for it, but it has to be done.

Sounds like you probably had a lucky escape from what you posted 8o

fukin right 2 weeks after i got back from Columbo a female suicide bomer. killed 20 odd people in the Forte district , near the railway station n market a place that i went to on anumber of occasions:|

Mini-buses.

Spades right on this one.

Oh, and VV to Vientiene is a lot more than 5 hours if memory serves me right.

And the mini-buses are cool. What you don't want is a long journey in a songtheaw, kinda an open truck. Which will be full of people and luggage. I speak from experience.

But Vientiene isn't cool btw. It's an expensive Stalinist-looking shithole.

Ha ha oh aye forgot about those 'VIP' buses, Government run, broken, unrealiable death traps, there's nothing VIP about them. No aircon, broken seats, music turned up to volume +100, no space, windows that don't open. You'll be taking a minibus. It's the best, fastest and cheapest option. And just because you read somethiing on a website doesn't mean when you get there it's actually going to happen, it's SE Asia.

Vientiene isn't too special, expensive too. Got charged $25 for a room, most expensive room in the whole of SE Asia. Vang Vieng however is incredible and Luang Prabang is lovely. You must go tubing in Vang Vieng.
