Oh one of my pet peeves, n no offence to the English, is when foreigners assume that everyone in the UK is Engklish or "live in London." I don't class myself as British, I class myself as Welsh, as do most Welsh - n find it EXTREMELY insulting. It's the same with Canadians. I had sn online relationship for a year, n if anyone called him American he was not amused. He lived in a placed called Oshawa, which wasn't far from New York State so a lot of people mistook him for American. My goodness he was stoking hot with the sexiest accent, was in the regiment n we'd talk for hours.... WOW!

When we arrived at our almost-final-destination in the backwoods of north-east Italy last year, we were welcomed by our host in her bar. A larger than life stereotypical Italian mama called Mariella. She kept referring to us as English, and when I finally (gently and humourously) corrected her, she just threw her arms around and shouted "Pah! Inglaterra! Is all the same to me!!" :D

We forgave her cos of the free beer & home-made pizza. This was during referendum week too, so feelings of Scottishness were even stronger than usual. Heh.
 
I'm finally leaving Scotland in the summer. Going to Dusseldorf to see some emigrant folks in the summer. Not sure when, not sure how, but it's on the cards. Much looking forward to it.
 
I really don't get why people get so worked up over nationality. During my travels, people have taken me for a german all the time. It has happened on more than one occasion that someone didn't get that being Dutch isn't the same as being Danish. People have taken me for a Belgian, a South African, an Irishman (for some reason I appear to have an Irish accent when speaking English). I find this all quite amusing. I have never understood why people feel so strongly about some lines on a map and feel offended or even EXTREMELY insulted when someone gets it wrong :?
 
If you were Scottish, Irish, or Welsh you would understand how annoying it is to be mistaken for a certain other nationality all the time. ;)
 
I get accused of being French and American a lot. Which is annoying.

I then explain that I'm from Ireland, which draws blank looks. I then explain its an island, at which point I say the island of Ireland, and then they say "yes,yes island, which island?:!

Sometimes I get the Ireland, England all the same line from Cambodians and I say "sure, just like Cambodia and Vietnam, same, same" which gives them a jolt.

Sometime in my pub I'd wind up customers of a republican bent by making sweeping generalisations about Irish and English being more alike than they would like to admit. Good fun.

im Irish and never get mistaken for another nationality, saying that though i have very pale skin and my dad id a redhead, so is one of my sons xxxRachelxxx
 
Bollocks to borders.

In the Philippines we met a lovely Filipino couple who had spent some time living in London. They refused to believe we were English and were insistent we were Dutch. Really insistent. Better than being mistaken for Scottish or Welsh for sure.

I remember sitting in a cafe in Pisa, Italy waiting for a train when a bunch of scousers on a trip to a Roma game rampage through like only drunk English tourists at 10am can. My ex wife and myself we quite happy to be mistaken for local Italians.

I also got into an argument with an old man on the street who refused to believe I didn't speak Italian in the village I played rugby for.
 
I did 3 weeks in Thailand in January. Loved every minute of it. Did BKK, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phi Phi and back to BKK. Did all the touristy things and had a great time. It was more of a holiday than "travelling" but I loved meeting up with folk doing 6 month+ tours and soaking up a bit of that vibe.

One of the best things we did was a 3 day motorbike tour with this company..........http://somethingdifferenttours.com/ Saw parts of Thailand I would never of otherwise seen. Driving through jungle for hours. We went tubing on one of the days and it was blissful. Just Me the missus and our two guides floating down a river. Saw no -one else for hours!

Going to go back again this December but keen to see a bit more of SE Asia. Definitely Loas, maybe Cambodia, Vietnam and may be an other island or two.

Any one got a good plan for a 3 week adventure? im open to any suggestions.

Last time I pre-booked internal flights and hotels. This time Im hoping to have a bit more freedom, but with only 3 weeks it might actually be more advisable to have more of a fixed plan in place before setting off.

The Spade used to be great for travel info on here. Wonder what he's up to now.

My flights are booked. Just need to think of ways of filling the 21 days :)
 
I'm currently visiting my sister just outside of Frankfurt. I've been fasting all day in preparation for tonight's pork knuckle and Pilsner initiation into my new German family.
 
I did something quite similar swedger, was in Phi Phi and spent Thai New Year in Patong, that was crazy!!!

I'm sure you won't have any trouble filling your 21 days!

We went down the Mae Chaem river. I was expecting loads of folk with tubes, cooler boxes and beers etc. But this was just us in tractor tyre tubes. No safety gear, no need either..it was really slow pace. Sun beating down, birds chirping away!
 
Guess who's going on first holiday in 11 years, first family holiday in 21 years? It's only a haven for a few days but kinda excited. As I've been swimming up to 35 lengths I want to try swimminh in the sea n it'll be nice for little one as she's only been on holiday once with my bruv's family.

I guess OU residential schools at Warwick n Sussex don't count as holidays? Lol although they felt like one. I LOVE travelling on trains n miss it.

Was anxiois at first as family booked this as a surpris n so ive had to sort Beauty out; catery, flea n worm treatment (you buy the flea treatment n put it on their neck n vet shoves a worming tablet in her mouth).

But yea kinda looking fwd to it now.

Samoui is quite nice in Thailand, enjoyed this more than BKK - its small and great for lazy days, crashing mopeds etc. I was in Abu Dhabi the other week, was a nice quick trip (no alcohol) then did a few days in Dubai. Was staying on the Marina so was pretty nice :D

I think I'm doing Europe again on my next trip - doing a month this time so would be nice to get a few places covered.
