The 'quit smoking' thread

Forgot about this thread, did a search in this thread and found some my old posts from back 2003/04... gee they were pretty interesting days :)

Its a weird habit. On the one hand you realise its a filthy , pointless , expensive and damaging habit. On the other it would be like losing a part of your life to quit. I can go a fair while without really having any physical need for one but the mental addiction always gets me in again.

Yeah I argee.... totally.... I often don't smoke until in late afternoon, rarely smoke in mornings when I get out of bed, but once I light up in the arvo, I just smoke pretty heaps, until I get home from work sometime past 10-11pm.

I have tired to give up countless times, just damned hard when you are surrounded by workmates who are smokers, house mates are smokers, and some family members are smokers. :X

Up all night - Join the "coffee club" at your office's water fountion/water despinser (sp?) while the smokers are downstairs and puffing away outside. ;)

Noticed some office workers make " water bottle re-filling trips" often.

Update:
Rhythmdaddy has not had a cigarette or any other type of nicotine since the day he quit. It has now been about 4.5 months. He still has massive cravings every day, somethimes almost uncontrollable. He gets through every time with flying colors.

(For some reason boasting about my quitting makes me speak in the third person) :)

I have now been a non smoker for four weeks. And so far I don't look like turning back. I must admit, I've craved one. But it's passed pretty quickly and easily.
And how did I quit so easily, I paid My Hypnotherapist man $200 and an hour of my time. I figured it only had to last 3 weeks before the investment paid itself off. So all is good now!!

I've already noticed the extra money I've got to spend on gambling and alcohol :p

Yeah ummm, had some blow outs.. Havent really had a smoke while sober though :p

If you have the right motivation you can quit. I have tried for years to quit but the motivation really wasn't there i guess it would last for a few months or so but than i would be back smoking more. When i found out was pregnant my partner made me quit, it took him a little longer to give them up but it has now been about 3 months since i have had a smoke and i really don't feel the need to go back like i have before. My guess is that if you have the motivation behind it you can do it.

I quit over 2 years ago now. You're all living in the past. I saw the whole smoking thing going to shit years ago with tougher laws, more expensive packs etc. In 6 months you southerners will have the same "Cow pen" laws we have up here. I find it really amusing that they make all the smokers stand in an animal pen while they smoke, temporarily removing them from the rest of society just because they're different :D

Srsly people, you're spending a shit load of money that is slowly killing you and making you feel like shit the rest of the time anyway. I hardly get sick at all any more since not smoking. Why pay good money for something that offers you little to no positives.

Just for the record, I really like looking down my nose at smokers. I managed to quit and stay quit so I must be so much better than you :D

On a brighter note- Always remember kiddies, you loss 20% of your sex appeal in a night club if you light your own cigarettes :D

It was my NY resolution to quit.
Stimulants and nightclubs made it otherwise.

I'm still trying though. How did you quit NickyJ?

I've been 6 months without smoking and haven't craved once!!

Change your mindset and you'll be free. Not having to smoke is the ULTIMATE freedom. ;)

I quit in 2 phases. 1stly I cut back to only smoking on weekends and/or while off chops. Come Sunday, if I still had more cigarettes than I needed I'd give them away so I wouldn't have any left by Monday. I kept that up for about a year because I believed I wouldn't be able to get munted without smoking.

Then I made a new years resolution and just gave it a go. It was hard the 1st time to not touch a cigarette while munted but after I'd done it once I realised it wasn't such a big deal and I just don't miss it at all any more.

Just convince yourself that its a disgusting habit and you're actually paying good money to slowly kill yourself (8(). I couldn't possibly see a reason to keep smoking once I thought of it like that. And you start feeling a shit load better in general after going without for a few weeks. The tiny little bit of enjoyment a cigarette provides is no where near equal to the positives of not smoking, so just quit already! And do it like you mean it!

Word nigha. Its all about mindset. Get into the mind set of being a NON SMOKER Once you quit, you are now a non smoker. And non smokers do not smoke! At all! Not even just one while drinking! So stop coming up with excuses and justifying it anyway you can and just stay quit :)

day by day I feel I should quit more.
I'm thinking I might hit up a three pronged attack with hypnotherapy, zyban, and patches until the zyban starts making me sick.

I also really do think the hardest part is finding something to do while walking between lectures/on breaks/post masturbation. i don't really feel the need to smoke during binge drinks, and i rarely get munted these days... :\

Toothpicks. I chewed my way through a forest.

Almost a year and a half now and I cant even recall what a nicotine pang feels like

From this thread (ive made a few posts, but thought this one covered most of it)

^ Yes, pride is your friend

I smoked for 12yrs or so, packet a day. I'd wake up in the middle of the night, smoke, go back to sleep. Very addicted. So heres some tips.

My rule: When quitting I can do whatever the fuck i like except put a smoke in my mouth and light it. Keep it simple. I can say fuckit im not going to work, i can get shitfaced in the middle of the week, i can order takeaway, i can bootycall that girl I know I shouldnt, shirk responsibility, get creatively decadent ... willpower is only to be spent on not lighting a smoke.

Mentally: I quit because i choose to - end of story. There are no reasons as logic is weak and can be argued against. Believe me, you will sit there and hammer your own defense trying to justify lighting a smoke. Without a reason there is nothing to pry against.

Defenses: When my own mind (The junky voice) says: "have a smoke" that is not me, its my adversary, the quicker i build an automatic "NO" reply the easier things will get ... do NOT negotiate, thats a trap, dont even go there. That automatic reply is your savior, hone it to a razors edge - fast, sharp and immediate.

Other stuff that I did: BREATHE and relax - cravings will hit you for around 3 minutes then pass, eat mints, listerine strips, nuts, toothpicks. I would pop a mint, go outside and chew a toothpick for 3 minutes and imagine as hard as I could that it was a smoke, thats fine, as long as it isnt one. I also gave myself reminders and rewards daily

Ive heard 'quit buddies' work - but mine fucking piked after a week. I just used it as fuel - 'Im better than you' (Being 'decadent quitting maddog' im allowed to think whatever i feel like).

It was a lot of work, but in a sick kind of way i actually really enjoyed the experience. Amazing dreams, insanely creative, really feeling alive and in the moment.

Good luck :D
