The 'quit smoking' thread

its the off again, on again smoking that kills me...and the fact i think i breathe in over one packet of passive smoke each time im at work...

*eeewww*

theres something to help you quit :\

Ahhh.... Davidoffs... was smoking 1-2 packets of them a DAY during my Asian travels few years back... they were everywhere and cheap... and my local tobaccoist supplies them, I still buy them now and then when I feel like to "treat" myself some tasty poisons, they are just bit out of my price range in Australia, while they were few dollars in Asia.

I havn't had even a drag of a cigarette since two weeks before my birthday in November last year. It wasn't easy to do (I did it without patches) but I don't think I will ever smoke again even though the urge is still there sometimes (I don't think mentally it is something you can ever get over :)).

Two words

NICORETTE MICROTABS

These things are amazing, I have smoked for 16 years or so, heavily for about 12 of them, tried quitting 4x with patches to no avail, but these things have made me stop for good!

They kick in within about 4 or 5 minutes and you can actually feel the wave of 'calm' come over you.

Now I just have to wean myself off these LOL

^^^^ these microtabs how often you take them? you just pop them when you crave a ciggie? kinda like these chewing gums?

very true.

this guy once told me (i dont know if its completely true or not though) that of all drug related addictions, having an addiction to tobacco (cigarettes) is actually the hardest of all to break.

I'm not a smoker but I'm here to give you all support. GOOD WORK!!!!

Its probably the best decision you have ever made for your health to avoid lung cancer and heart disease when you're older. My old man smoked from when he was a teenager until he was 55 and got lung cancer. It always seems so much more real when its in your face like that.

Good work in quitting, in all odds you're saving your life

Haha, when I tried patches they gave me a cool nicotiney buzz for about half an hour after applying a new one...

So I usually spent most of the 24 hours waiting for the time to put a new one on :)

Yup exactly like the gum, I know when I was on the patches I looked forward to the mornings as well LOL

You can have up to 40 a day, I normally have about 6 or 7 a day.

They are sublingal tabs so u just keep it under ya tongue :)

Mmmm... maybe I should have a go with these Microtabs, patches makes my arms itchy FOR HOURS and it's SOOO ANNOYING, especially the area where I place the patches, and sometimes when I pass out drunk and I forgot to take these patches off and I get really BIZZARE Lucid dreams.

These chewing gums give me nasty heartburn type of feeling and hate the peppery taste... so I quitted using these products.

And went back to smoking cancer sticks....

Will go to the chemist when I finish off my pouch of Champion Ruby rolling Tobacco....and have a go with these Microtabs.

The microtabs also burn like fuck for the first few days, but after a while you will start to enjoy the flavour, it becomes almost 'savoury' LOL I always look forward to a microtab after a meal now :|

But honestly, if you can stick out the 'peppery' taste for a few days you will be suprised at how effective they really are. I have'nt really tried the gum properly so I can give no comparison but these kick in really quickly. :)

I don't know if I am allowed to post the prices but a packet of 30 is about half that number ;) and a packet of 105 is around one third of that one ;) LOL

I find 105 lasts me around 2 weeks :)

Well, Mr Samadhi and i are planning to try for a baby in about 4 months, so i'm gearing to quit smoking in the next couple of weeks...it's going to be hard, but the health of our potential child will make it alot easier to bear. :)

Another reason to quit smoking

Cigarettes more polluting than diesel exhaust

The air pollution emitted by cigarettes is 10 times greater than diesel car exhaust, a small Italian study finds.

Researchers compared the particulate matter in the exhaust fumes from a modern car engine, fuelled with low-sulphur diesel, and in cigarette smoke. Three smouldering cigarettes produced a 10-fold increase in air particles compared to those produced by the idling vehicle.

“I was very surprised. We didn’t expect to find such a big difference in the particulate matter produced,” says Giovanni Invernizzi from the Tobacco Control Unit of Italy’s National Cancer Institute in Milan, who led the study.

Ivan Vince, an air pollution expert from Ask Consultants in London, UK, says the findings are reasonable. He notes that cigarettes give off a lot more respirable particulates than the new generation of low-sulphur diesels, which help cut particulate emissions.

Smouldering cigarettes

Invernizzi and colleagues conducted their controlled experiment in a private garage in the small Alpine town of Chiavenna, which enjoys a particularly low level of air pollution.

The car used was 2002 Ford Mondeo turbo diesel with a two-litre engine, and had been on the road for six months. It was left idling in the closed garage for 30 minutes while a portable analyser took particulate air samples every two minutes.

The garage was then aired for four hours, after which the doors were re-closed and three filter cigarettes were burned sequentially over a total of 30 minutes.

The portable analyser showed that 10 times as many pollutant particulates were released in the cigarette smoke as the diesel fumes. And the comparative pollution levels for the tiniest particulates – the most dangerous to health – were even greater.

Eye damage

“The tiny particulates, less than 2.5 micrometres, are able to penetrate right into the alveoli in the lungs, where the carcinogens do the most damage,” Vince says.

“Most of the chemicals emitted from cigarettes are very short-lived and so they mostly damage the local environment. For example, aldehydes damage plants and peoples’ eyes and respiratory tract," he notes. Nitric oxide, also produced by cigarettes, is the culprit in photochemical smog and drives ozone formation in cities.

“But with more and more people being made to smoke outside and in doorways, the external environmental effects must surely rise,” Vince told New Scientist.

Invernizzi is hoping his results will provide a new weapon in the fight against teenage smoking. “Adolescents in Milan campaign against pollution and for a better environment – often with a cigarette hanging out of their mouths. We can show them that smoking also harms the environment.”

i have a question for all of you that have quit , have tried to quit or are still trying to quit ... my boyfriend just recently decided to try and quit smoking. of course he is a little edgy and i was just wondering what i could do to try and help out, besides the obvious =D :p i would really like to help but i never picked up smoking so i really don't know what it is like to try and quit , so i am sort of lost . . . any ideas?

one option i can see good way to quit ciggies is take two weeks off work and take/consume shitloads of benzos and opiates for 2 weeks straight because you will be sleeping most of the time and you will end up sleeping I mean you cant smoke ciggies while sleeping?

Nah not a good healthy suggestion .... just got to do it the hard ward and just stop buying them, spend all your money on grog so you won't have any leftover cash to buy ciggies, but at the same time, I find hard to drink without a ciggie in my hand....

i have been warned that if i don't quit smoking immediatley, that i will eventually - well, sooner rather than later- not be able to virtually ever sing again...

not good. and not fun... and im seeing an ear nose and throat specialist tommorrow.

P.s im scared.

i dunno if i said it but i have 2 rules

1. find a boy that i like enough and if he hates the smoking, i'll quit
2. If i get pregnant

other than that, i'm not gunna kid myself into thinking i'll quit, because i won't
