the phone thread

Find out how much the handset is to buy before you go. Then work out over the course of the contract how much you are paying for the phone and added minutes etc. when in store.

I did this and concluded that after the 2 year contract was up all I had done was pay for the phone. Bargain.

my contract is up at the end of this year, never going for a 24 month again. and deff going to get another Samsung. might switch to orange or something, the o2 internet converage is shit. do orange and o2 use the same masts etc?

I think it was Vodaphone that were doing a free upgrade every six months. But I'm assuming it'll have some hefty price tag, or a limited selection of phones you can upgrade from.

The HTC range covers the spectrum from cheap'n'cheerful (but maybe underspecced and not that great build quality) to something like state of the art. Or it did when I was interested in these things. I'm on my 2nd Desire Z only because #1 was confiscated, never had any hardware issues in several years of fairly rough use. All I'm saying is that you can't slam the brand based on bad luck with a specific model.

I had a Desire before this phone. It was great. I gave it to my mate after having it for 18 months. He breaks phones weekly and still managed to have it for 6 months before smashing it.

Really depends on your location I think, but for me in Devon, the coverage when I ws on Orange was much worse than it is on o2 now.

Went looking at new phones on Friday and there are some lovely new ones about. The HTC 1 is a great looking phone and the screens are so good with great resolution on them.
I want to get a Samsung Galaxy 3 but not sure whether to go for the mini version or not as the size looks more pocket friendly than the larger size screen.
Just need to do some research before spending my money. I know I want an Android phone again with Jellybean update if possible.

Yeah Shopper,I really do like the S3 & have wanted one for a while. Can't get a contract due to bad credit history but have finally got some money to be able to buy the phone itself and just get the best payg data deal that I can. Would prefer to stay on Orange (EE) & I think they have a sim that will give me 1GB data a month for a £10 top up & that will be more than enough for my needs.

I know o2 do a credit thing where if you phone them up and ask for a contract, they'll go through the usual method of credit checking (which you'll fail) then offer you a deal wherein if you top up a certain amount (usually a tenner) at least every month, they'll at first offer you a crap sim only deal, and if you stick to that, upgrade you again building up a credit history with o2 directly, and if you are always up to date with that, then they'll offer you the current phones after a certain point (usually after a year or so).

I only know about this as a friend who got shit loads of credit cards and just went on several benders got into so much debt he got to a point where he had to go bankrupt and this was the only way he could get a decent phone.

But, if you're coping just fine on PAYG, buy what you like! (Or rather, what you can afford)

I like the sound of that Shopper. If I can get on that with O2 and build up a good credit history with them over a year or so then hopefully I would be able to get back to upgradeing my phone with them every year or so.
Thanks for the info, will look into that.
