a pile of nigella lawsons dirty lingerie
im coming to the end of my 24month contract now, finishes just after christmas, thank god. currently paying what works out to about £17 a month

with vodafone atm, theyve just offering me an upgrade, im tempted as i'll be rid of this pile of shit. probably willing to go to £20 a month and i deffo want unlimited internet. other than that, im open to suggestions on handsets. had an htc wildfire last time, before i broke it and got stuck with this pile of shite. i liked it, no desire for an iphone or owt whatsoever

what phone contract are you currently on? who are the best providers about? the best handsets? offers? freebies? should i wait till january and go for a package deal, xbox thrown in or some shite? what new features should we all be looking for on handsets and is anyone sitting on a shit-hot deal they managed to wangle for themselves? etc etc

Sony Ericson Xperia, with a large screen.

It's just amazing, does anything and everything... can't fault it. I can browse the 'net just as easily as a computer

Had one with a smaller screen before, amazingly good phone... but typing in the internet browser was a little difficult.

Giffgaff (o2 network) pay as you go, with the £12 goody bag that gives me 250 minutes, unlimited texts and data a month, never use any additional credit.

Handset wise, I buy sim free when a new phone I'm interested in comes out, keep the packaging and look after it, selling on the old one on ebay. I estimate I spend about £150 a year in depreciation this way, making the total monthly cost about the same as a contract, but without a fixed term and the freedom to have whatever handset I want, currently rocking a Sony Xperia Z :)

galaxy s3 should be around that price now that the s4 is out, i've got one and its a fantastic phone, does everything bar wipe your ass and theres probably an app for that too

I think that I may be getting the Samsung Galaxy S3 payg as long as the price isn't ridiculous.
My mate had the Galaxy S2 & that was a lovely phone with a great looking screen on it.

hmmm... thanks you lot

what you paying on yer sony raas? got unlimited net? cant emphasise enough how important that is

dont generally like samsungs, coltdan - but your suggestion is the lead currently. what network did you get it on and what sets it apart from all the other phones youve had

id love to get the htc one, shoppercheck - but what kinda price we talking for unlimited net and a decent amount of texts/tinternet

worst mistake of my life (okay, tad overstated) was not getting unlimited net on my last contract, ended up accruing massive bills first couple months through youtube binges then had to go cold turkey on it as still no home internet. still craving the cunting tube n all. fucking awful not being able to watch what i want

I've just had a price drop in my plan, I pay £26 a month to EE (T-Mobile) for unlimited everything (texts, internet and cross network calls), think I was paying £34 or £36, which is still a bargain for unlimited everything.

If you recommend me, or anyone else on orange/tmobile/ee (only need the mobile number) we/you'd both get either a month's free service (on whatever plan you sign up with) or £25 in vouchers you can spend in most places.

giffgaff!

samsungs are horrible phones to use.

I've got a nokia 8210, and a 5er a month cash top-up giffgaff, gives me 300 texts and 60 mins calls.

I pay about £20 a month on O2 with someone's staff discount. No idea what my minutes and shit are but they all might as well be unlimited. Very rarely have I ever paid a penny over the line rental.

On a 24 month contract which is a bit of a cunt though. I'm sick of my HTC Sensation (I think that's what it is) phone.

yeah don't be getting HTC. They're decent until you actually have to use them.
Mine broke from apparently nothing... I have only dropped it 3 times ever (once narrowly avoiding falling down works lift shaft) and none of these were around the time it did break. Hasn't had water contact, has been in my pocket when it's a bit humid though. Anyway, all of a sudden it stops vibrating. And then it cannot connect to internet. and then it starts randomly turning off. and then the screen just produced static 100% of the time. Ended up paying 180 quid to get it 'fixed'. They said they were going to just replace the handset because this problem wasnt covered by warranty. I get it back and it's the exact same case/screen...

Mind you, screens are solid. Wouldn't bother going with iphone at all considering the rate they smash. I don't know a single iphone owner who hasnt had theirs smashed at least once.

Currently on 27 a month, unlimited texts, calls and a gig internet i think. HTC Sensation XE with Beats. Beats immediately broke btw, didn't bother even getting them replaced. Got it the week it came out without really realising it - I wanted to buy the Rezound which was only released in US, but didn't know this until I got to the O2 store. Definitely hitting up giffgaffs deals once I'm out of this contact though.
Pretty big fan of samsungs, not a fan of windows 8 at all

I quite like HTCs, I had the desire for over three years and it still worked despite being dropped a million times and being completely soaked on a couple of occasions. Switched to giffgaff as soon as my contract ran out and bought a second hand HTC Sensation for cheap off my mate. Giffgaff is totally the way to go if you're on a budget plus I like the community ethos that they have.

Fuck paying £40+ a month and being stuck in a contract for 2 years with a phone you hate.

The HTC range covers the spectrum from cheap'n'cheerful (but maybe underspecced and not that great build quality) to something like state of the art. Or it did when I was interested in these things. I'm on my 2nd Desire Z only because #1 was confiscated, never had any hardware issues in several years of fairly rough use. All I'm saying is that you can't slam the brand based on bad luck with a specific model. In the old days you could peg a name reasonably firmly to an end of the market (not just phones, all manner of shit) but it's less clear cut these days as many manufacturers try to cover wider price brackets. There are exceptions, at least when it comes to appearances, I doubt Apple would produce a budget phone but Nokia have in the past sold brittle lumps of plastic alongside top end P.O.D.s.

I have a Galaxy s3 that was free with work. The large screen is handy for web browsing but it is a bit bulky after a while and the screen replacement charge is quite high. Id recommend it at a cheap price.

fuck ye contracts giffgaff all the way

£12 goodybag rates

250 UK minutes
Unlimited UK texts
Unlimited internet
Free to giffgaff

That's an amazing bargain!! 3 has unlimited data for £12.90 a month, but only 5000 texts and 200 minutes. giffgaff wins!!

If you decide to get a handset on a contract, make sure you don't get ripped off. Especially for slightly older phones, phone companies sometimes charge outrageous prices. You can figure out how much you're actually paying for the phone by comparing the tariff to the same tariff on SIM only.
E.g. 3 will give you a Samsung Galaxy S III Mini for £26 a month over 24 months. The calls/texts/data are _exactly_ the same as a SIM only contract for £15. So you're paying £11 a month towards the phone, totalling £264 over 24 months. They sell it on PAYG for £270.... but since you can buy it for £180 from lots of places it's time to run a mile from that contract.
Sometimes the contract is way cheaper, go figure. Usually the contract is more expensive by a smallish amount, like £10-£20. Worth checking though. I didn't when I got my rip off contract.

Handset-wise, I love my Samsung Galaxy s2. Samsung made some absolutely awful phones before they started making smartphones, but they seem to have got it right now. It has all the usual smartphone/android features, with a really nice big screen. Even full of data and apps, it's still as smooth to operate as it was when it was new. It doesn't ever judder or go slowly, which I've seen other androids do. For that, it pays with battery life, which is pretty awful. It'll last about a day and a half on standby.
I've heard good things about the s3, so I'd say get an s3!
