this is a pretty stupid statement to make isn't it?

i'm pretty sure only a minority of the drug taking individuals on here are actually phat pant wearing ravers.. i admit i am one of them,
and no doubt there are a few others. but for the most part.
i'd say that you're not.

why do i bring this up?
well theres an upcoming event you see...

amnesia 20/03/2009 @ 590 little bourke st melbourne
featuring
Luna, Pavo, Tatanka, A-Lusion, Dave Joy & Pila...

not to mention all the local talent.
looks like a pretty good show right?

well you're wrong.
the promoters are under the misconception that only ravers who wear phatties and hoodies are the only people who use drugs.
and as theyre trying to keep the event "drug free"
they have put this on the back of their flyer...

"dress code:
dress to impress
strictly no rave gear
no hoodies, phat pants please"

ok... so you're gonna throw a hardstyle event and tell people to dress to impress, and that looking like a raver wont get you in..

do they really think this is gonna stop people from using drugs?
are they gonna tell habib the hektik sik khunt to put his shirt back on when he starts overheating cos he's eaten a few too many pills?

dear amnesia entertainment team. you can politely go fuck yourself.

that is all.

bloody hell thats one of the stupidest things I have heard of in a long time. Its a fucking dance event, phat pants and hoodies are part of the dance culture. If they are gonna ban those than they better ban the glow sticks and laser lights as well. What a total crock of shit. I'd love to see amnesia get boycotted by the people.

I kind of have to agree with you js2k6... let people dress how they so desire! I can understand dress requirements when occupational health and safety is an issue but every second place seems to have ridiculous dress codes to attempt to cull out all but the rich, young, drunk patrons these days :(

I'm definatly no raver but trackies or jeans and a hoodie are my style anyways. It's plain retarded to expect that the general clientele for this event is to dress like they'r off to "grab a granny" o28's

have the promoters actually said this? that kids in rave gear are the only ones taking drugs at such events therefore rave gear is banned?

Maybe they just want people to look respectable and keep the club as a higher respect level. They prob dont want goths and emos there either but they prob wont go anyway.

where does it say this is because of drug use?

just fyi Ive seen the reverse heaps of times in melbourne - clubs and events saying 'ravers only' and the like.

it doesn't say that this is because of drug use

but the dress code bit is written directly above where it says

"this is an 18+ drug free event, photo id required. management reserves all rights"
it's more a case of adding 2 and 2 together

it may not be the promoters, there are a few venues that don't like punters wearing phatties.
never seen the reverse being said like basix mentions.

it'd be stupid to expect everyone to turn up to an event wearing phats, most of the pairs i have cost me over $150-200 a pop.

i have one pair of jeans
a pair of pinstripe mens business slacks
6 pairs of reflective strange days style phats
2 pairs of inacoma denim 3/4 length phats.

theres a venue in ringwood, which doesn't allow punters to wear phatties, and theyve actually said it is because the police gave them a hard time, with drug raids and such before they stopped people wearing them at their club. (they told me this because i was refused entry there one night when i was wearing em)
which happily allowed me in other weeks wearing the semi-plain denim 3/4 length ones?

wonder if amnesia will be the same. heh. not wasting $60+BF to find out.
and really. who would want to go to an event like this that isnt full of ravers?
it's probably gonna be like phd sundaiiiiiiizzzzz.. *cough*

its the same reason why bogan bob won't get let into the local pub on a sad'dy night while wearing a truckie singlet and thongs!
bogan bob fits the stereo type of the maggot who loves to smash down the grog and then proceed to tune womens parts and pick fights with randoms because he thinks they're poofs!
it doesnt mean that all people that wear this attire are exactly the same, its just that they are easily associated with the reputation!

every hard dance event has that certain number of people that dedicate their time to going hard, and guaranteed that a high percentage of these hard nuts would be represented by true hoovers decked out in the rave gear! Thus its easy for one to assume that dressing up like a troll doll indicates that 'go hard' gene!

I've personally never had the confidence to wear phatties to raves, but to me its all part of the atmosphere. I love it when you go to a rave and you see a whole bunch of people wearing them and other "out there" kinds of attire. Kinda lets me know Im gonna have a great time.

On the one hand, I love my rave culture, and I hate to see it put down like this.

On the other hand, I understand where the promoters are coming from. Melbourne in particular (though all cities to an extent) has a particularly vicious media that loves to make the ravers = drug users connection and exploit it for some good old fashioned moral panic. And the connection is true, yes, but no more so than any other dance scene.

I imagine Amnesia are trying to distance themself from that so they can avoid coming under media fire and avoid that reputation. Look what happened to XQ, 21 (?) blowouts, 'rave drug overdoses!' all over the news, and suddenly QDance aren't going down to Melbourne anymore.

They figure if people rock up in jeans instead of phatties then they can avoid the media frenzy and not have the negative publicity affect their event. And honestly, I can't really blame them. It's retarded, yes, but I understand why they're trying to distance themselves from that image. In the end, it's about seperating the scene from the negative publicity.

Besides, rave isn't about what you're wearing, it's about being friendly, loving the music and going off on the dancefloor :D (and getting messy of course, but shh)

tbh i welcome dress codes like that, people wearing that stuff look ridiculous... seriously it's not hard to look nice.

even better is when they say no lad clothing!

I think your 2+2 is coming up with 5.

The No Drug use is a standard comment on most larger event posters now. It's put there because the organisers don't want to be a target, and need a legal get out if it all goes up the creek.

The No Phatties / Dress code thing? It can be any number of reasons, most of them are going to be about keeping a low profile and targeting a certain crowd. For instance - the venue has made a call that they don't want the sort of people in phatties. The venue is trying to move up market. Someone in the organising crew has a thing against pHd hoodies. I'm as inclusive as the next person and really don't care too much, but obviously someone in the organising crew does care. It's a free market, they'll live an die by their decisions.

Given this is in Melbourne, I would think a statement saying they don't want phatties or ravers at all is really saying; take whatever drugs you want, just don't bring any G. :|

As someone else has mentioned, no promoter wants a 10+ blowout event that ends up on the evening news.

in sydney, the back of most powerhouse rave flyers these days ask for "no lad clothing ie; stripey shirts, white caps, running shoes".
lol.
i won't argue with that one.
but whats wrong with phat pants and hoodies??
