The Official Psychedelic Rock Thread v. Interstellar Overdrive

i would recommend the nuggets box set, "Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968"

also, the holy modal rounders album "The Moray Eels Eat The Holy Modal Rounders" which is psychedelic, to be sure...but not necessarily in the same vein as the more predictable psychedelic rock bands. they were allegedly the first band to use the word "psychedelic" in a song.

absolutely agree with the person that mentioned Faust.
fuck yeah. i would recommend Can and a lot of other 'krautrock' artists as well. much more interesting than most music that cops the 'psych' tag IMO. maybe i'm just a snob but i think there is a lot more to psychedelic rock than the doors and pink floyd.

well i would say the best psych bands are Earthless, The Machine, 13th Floor Elevators. if youre looking for some stoner kinda stuff then there's Kyuss, High on fire, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Acid King, Pentagram. there are tonnes of great bands out there that i love getting high too, just go through Youtube and Wikipedia untill about 4am every night and you'll find some mental shit. trust me, i do it everynight xD hope i helped.

That brainticket album is one of the trippiest albums I've ever heard, great stuff.
I have the faust tapes 5 cd box set, the person I bought it off of stained the booklet and cardboard box with cigarettes or weed or something which is lame but I only paid $6 for it at least so still great deal. I think I like Faust's first album the most since its the weirdest and most experimental of them all. Total mindf*ck of an album. Weird that Faust IV isn't included in the set I had to get it separately, probably due to licensing issues.
Some other great krautrock albums that I can recommend that I didn't post before:
Popol vuh- in the gardens of pharoa and hosianna mantra
Eroc- self titled (great mindbending electronic krautrock solo effort from grobschnitts drummer)
Kraan- andy nogger
Harmonia- Musik von harmonia, deluxe
Guru guru- Ufo, Kanguru
Embryo- steig aus
Os mundi- 43 minuten
Electric sandwich- s/t
Grobschnitt- solar music live
Manuel gottsching- inventions for electric guitar

Seconding the recommendation for the first nuggets box, even though its more garage rock then psychedelic rock for the most part.

Awesome that so many BLers are into krautrock.

I've been listening to a lot of Brian Jonestown Massacre lately. I love the droning sound of this song, so hypnotic!

Psychedelic/instrumental/space rock bands

Or just "psych-jam" bands. I haven't come across much mention of this genre on here, surprisingly.

Typically a track will be at least 10 minutes long, improvisational and groovy as hell, with the aim of taking the listener on a drawn-out, "cosmic" journey with the guitar solo as the vehicle.

Earthless

Black Bombain

Tia Carrera

Red Octopus

Don't tell me I'm alone in this, who else is feeling the sonic vibrations? %)

Ash Ra Tempel! Pioneers in the field

I love earthless too, nice pick!

In its entirety, i'd say the flaming lips' album Embryonic fits this category, it is insanely psychedelic although the songs are shorter than your average krautrock jam

Amon Duul ii is also a classic

13th floor elevators are essential for anyone who likes psychedelic rock. All three of their albums are amazing.
Other old 60s stuff is obvious: GD, Quicksilver, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, Doors, Velvet Underground

Newer stuff:
Black Angels
Spacemen 3
Tame Impala (been mentioned a bunch of times, but seriously, listen to them)
Flaming Lips
Videohippos, at least the album Unbeast the Leash, thats all i've heard by them.
The Pixies
Butthole Surfers (psychedelic punk kinda lol, weird stuff)
Lotus

ALso:
Syd Barrets solo work

and if you like stoner metal stuff like Electric Wizard check out Sleep, Bongzilla, Stonehelm, Weedeater, and Om (Especially Sleep)

The Verve's first album is pretty good. Like psychedelic shoegaze space rock. One of my favourite albums.
