the official NCAA football thread

hats off to illinois, they had a game plan and executed. but, I am trying to figure out how Oklahoma, who lost to an unranked ( and prolly not making a bowl) Colorado team, is still ranked ahead of OSU. Or West Virginia for that matter...

im sure that all 12 seniors (2 of whom are starters if im not mistaken) on the 98 man roster appreciate that :)

that was a hard loss to take. i dont feel that the better team won. boeckman, who hasnt made too many mistakes all year throws 3 picks. beanie wells, was banged up. and most importlantly the defense could come up with a stop against a spread offense (national title game anyone :|) i was under no delusions that osu was the best team in the country, but they should not have lost that game

Or you could say that LSU is so talented that they can make all those mistakes and STILL pull out the W

Look at the LSU - VaTech to see what LSU can do when playing consistent mistake free football....

Anyways....enough of the homerism for now....

The season continues to surprise many.....There really isnt any clear cut #1 team this year much less a #2....

But i see Kansas dropping a game to Missouri and then OU beating them in the Big12 CG......

I dont see LSU dropping any although Arky scares me.....They have been playing crappy ball lately but they always give us a tough game year in and year out...and you can never count out Felix Jones and especially McFadden.....

Oregon runs the table as all of their tough games are over and they dont play a conf champ game.....

Oregon and LSU will run the table and theirs your BCS title game...

Oregon VS LSU is going to be the most unwatched, lowest ranked NC game of all time. :(
 
As much as I admired LSU as a 'team of destiny' the way they had everything fall right for them (at least in the UF game) and for most of the other games (shouldn't have had to go to OT against UK)...their coaching decisions and their player exectution had be believing they are a 'must' for the top two positions. And while I do not think anyone can catch up and overtake them, I do fear them getting to the SEC Championship and looking ahead to the NC, thereby losing to UGA (my feel for the East representative...but that might be slightly swayed by a bigger dislike for Fulmer). Anywho, point is I can see LSU tripping up and knocking themselves out of the NC game.

I'm with the majority in not thinking KAN can get there, but there is the chance, considering MIZ plays @ KAN on Thanksgiving weekend, they've got a shot to stay unbeaten...and somehow outscore OU for the big 12 championship...there is a chance, I can't deny that, but my heart tells me no. My heart tells me they are Hawaii of the Big12 waiting to play a team that might actually play defense and have some offensive ball control to eat clock :\ I'd love to see MIZ come out of there, but I have to go with conventional wisdom and lean to OU who will only play ONE of the top ranked teams. IF KAN could do it, and knock of 2 of the top 5 then it might squeak them into the second spot....but I don't want to think about that - it's not a pretty image to think of them in the NC.

That leaves me looking at WVU, and possibly OSU backing into the NC. *shiver*

The only pretty game I can imagine would be LSU vs Oregon. Anything else just isn't that appealing to me.
 
Axl, I disagree, I think you'd have the conf champs from what is generally viewed as the top two conferences going at it - both made mortal by one loss in a season with virtually no undefeated teams (spare my HI & KAN). Add in the west coast watching Oregon, and the southeast (and big10+1 eyes thinking of Les Miles someday coming to Michigan and what that might do to that conference). You've got national Heisman interest in Dixon (which would obviously be answered before the game, but if he gets it, it would help ratings).

I think it is the only matchup that WOULD be highly watched. Anything else wouldn't have the star power. Tell me any other matchup that could do better this year. Or, were you just saying it would be down because there aren't 2 undefeated teams going for it? Comparing it to recent years?
 
I, and the rest of the bulldawg nation, are patiently awaiting an enterprising sniper to take care of ainge in the vandy game. Short of that, or kentucky getting its act together, I dont; see the dawgs going to atlanta. :(

you are right, it would be the most watched match-up this year. but you are also right in that I am comparing it to the National Championships of recent years.

I think Oregon would have the star-power to get some ratings in check, despite them being shit on by the BCS on the constant. the only star power that LSU has is that they belong to the SEC, sort of like how the only star power OSU had this year is that they belong in Big 10 (which like the SEC is very weak this year, it's just that everyone's eyes are used to looking towards those two conferences for the best college football).

there are no Vince Youngs, no Carson Palmers, no Troy Smiths, and no battle-tested Florida Gators this year in the NC. Oregon is the most un-bland football team out there right now, and they are not even that good. remember? they got beat by Cal.

if a team that gets beat by Cal makes it to the NC... that is sad.

*cough* I count 5 SEC teams in this week's rankings, to the big ten's 4 *cough*

we could go around and around about this, and I don't put much value in any kind of silly numbers argument like the one I just typed, but don't you think it's a bit silly to lump the big ten (which is having a sub par year, excluding ohio state) with the SEC, which is always like this (people beating up on each other, spoiling title hopes). I think if we did a side by side, like the PAC 10 / SEC one above, the SEC would overwhelm the big ten 9 games out of 10.

One loss teams are supposed to be in the running for the NC, imo. The system is fucked when you have unbeatens that are clearly not competitive (kansas, imo). I know their tough games are still ahead of them, but there are really only 3 good conference in NCAA football, and they've all been mentioned in this post. Things will change, like they always do, but right now, I personally think boisie state, conneticut, hawaii, and BC can piss up a rope.

aside from lsu's ot loss to kentucky i think that oregon's loss to cal is the most respectable among national championship contenders. ratings shmatings, so dr pepper has to pay less for 30 seconds of ad time;)
 
How about the notion that Kansas should be #1?

Shouldn't an unbeaten team trump ANY team with 1 loss?

They had 10 chances to lose, and they didn't - by virtue of this they should be at the top of the heap.
 
I agree that strength of schedule trumps losses.

however, I have heard from many saying that the Big 12 is the best football conference this year. I don't know if I agree or disagree yet. your thoughts?
 
The Big 12 is definately one of the best, either the SEC or the Big 12 definately

Stength of schedule should be the top priority for determining rank, who have you beat!
But I dont like this team beat that team who beat the team that beat the number one team so the first team is way better.
 
Strength of schedule?

Each game = another chance to lose, no matter who you play, as evident with all the upsets this year in college football. You can have a cupcake schedule and get picked off when you least suspect it because that's just the way it is.

10 chances to lose and Kansas won them all. That's perfect to me. #1.
