all but 2 of those teams have won or shared the national title in the last decade... overrated?
 
I think it shows that they would get an overinflated ranking to begin the next season (perhaps two) and then end up much lower as the season wears on. The number that would offset that would be 'how many started low and won it all?' The answer, damn few. To get to the title game, you generally are among the top 5 or so heading into the season and hold on until the end. It would be interesting to see, however, what's the lowest start-of-season ranking for any of the past 10 champs. Less interesting, but more telling would be to see any champ the following season started where and ended where :\

I liked to hate on WVU and the Big Easy as much as anyone last year... but I think the two most entertaining teams to watch this year will be Arkansas and WVU. both teams will be fun to watch for their QB/RB running game one-two punch. WVU has a solid chance of making something of themselves this year, finally.

smotpoker - who do you think our beloved Bucks will lose to this year? we are so spoiled as OSU fans, everyone around campus is moaning this year on how bad we are going to do, and that is just because we are not ranked in the top 10 for once and do not have a Heisman trophy candidate. I could see us either going 10-1 or 10-2, with loses to Michigan (gasp!) and Wisconsin (maybe). any other football fan would take a 10-2 record with joy. but not us!

In the BCS era, LSU was the lowest (#14) preseason ranked team to win the NC
 
there is no dirty south bias. the SEC is the best conference in all of college football this decade, and any sports person who doesn't recognize this is shit.

anyways... who does everyone pick to win the Heisman? a little pre-season prediction if you will, which seems to be my S&G calling card lately. I shall pick Darren McFadden of Arkansas over Booty of USC (who love to give their white QBs Heisman trophies). McFadden will have plenty of time to run the ball in the RB and QB position (since that is what Arkansas loves to line up him up as) and maybe a couple hundred yards as passing at the QB position.
 
Axl, I think the Buckeyes will roll to an 8-0 start, lose at Penn State, beat Wisconsin, and probably lose to Michigan. Or I guess I could say they will lose 2 out of 3 of those in any order. I feel OSU's Defense will keep them in the game against PSU, but the atmosphere will be intense for a newer starter like Boeckman.
And even though Wisconsin will be highly ranked, and even though they've beat tOSU the last 3 times they played in Columbus, I think with the absolutely scary Defense OSU will have WU will have trouble moving the ball.
Michigan is always a toss up, they should have the better talent but then again they did in 2001 also, and we know what happened then...
I would love to see OSU beat UM, nothing would be better than seeing Tressel up his record to 6-1 against Carr. It'd make UM feel like we did throughout the 90's with John "Can't Beat Michigan" Cooper as our coach.

As far as the Heisman goes, I would have to say if Hawaii goes undefeated Colt Brennon will get it.
Ok prolly not but he's a much more exotic pick than Slaton or McFadden or Rice from Rutgers.
 
is it too late for jake long to jump to the nfl... never thought id see michigan get knocked off by a 1aa program.... thats just sad

The Canes looked surprisingly good today. They would have done better had Sam Shields played. Our only weaknesses were our receivers and our kicking game (both did look awful, Kirby Freeman would have had some pretty nice stats if it weren't for the drops and miscues). The OL finally looks decent, and Cooper and James tore it up in the back field, combining for over 200 total yards.


I would just love to see them upset Oklahoma next week :)
 
I'd have liked to see a more explosive Dawgs offense, but i'm willing to wait.

I completely missed Cal/Tenn, and was a little sad to see the absence of an upset.


It feels so fucking good to watch NCAA football again, though.

I think Mark May nailed it when he said "WTF is Matt Flynn doing RUSHING 8 times??!"

Im not a fan at ALL of this spread option BS.....The whole offense looked very uncomfortable....It was nice to see Miles turn off his headset to Crowton and start playing reg LSU ball....Other than the blocking I thought the receivers played well....especially Doucet....

Flynn was very sharp with all of his throws....He had a couple of 'ball could be placed nowhere else but there' thorws.....

I was very disappointed with the LSU O-line....There were a few false starts and holding penalties that killed drives....and MSU was making all kinds of penetration and forcing Flynn to flush the pocket.....

Which brings me to this.....I thought 21 of the 22 MSU players had an OUTSTANDING first half.....I m sure you can guess the 1 that didnt.....But MSU came out w/ fire in their eyes and were standing toe to toe with LSU in the 1st quarter....Dixon had a couple of of good runs really start to eat away on the LSU D and then Henig fumbled the 4th and 1 snap...MSU had the LSU D on their heels....

Croom had his players VERY well prepared (except the QB) and i really think if Henig can get his shit together and throw to anyone but the opposing team, MSU can come away with a few shocker wins in the SEC....The MSU D played their freakin hearts out....The first half was much closer than the score indicated...Had Henig been careful with the ball i think we could have seen a much more competitive game until at least halfway thru the 2nd half
 
What a fucking nightmare that Michigan game was! I left the bar at the end of the third quarter. I couldn't take any more. Nearly wrecked my motorcycle on the way home, I was so upset! :(

But I'm sure that was just a fluke. They'll come out on top (just as long as the defense gets their act together).

They were the best team in Division I-AA for 2 consecutive years... for what that's worth.

yeah, this had better be rock bottom if you're a michigan fan. for the record, i take no joy whatsover in seeing michigan's football program in such a state of affairs; it's bad for the conference and bad for football in general.
