the official NCAA football thread

I do remember a month ago me saying that SEC wasnt going to be the strongest conference, and it looks like again, it is just that.

TLB, the Bigeasy! I love it!

Also, look at Ohio States remaining schedule, if Florida had that we'd go undefeated every year! They play absolutely nobody compare that to Florida's schedule, or to LSU's for that matter. Its a fuckin joke, the Big 10 is a joke.

Florida's bout to have two losses after 6 weeks, Auburn was even unranked.

Michigan sucks I'll give you that, but OSU, Purdue, Wisconsin are all solid.

And Ron Zooks new team could beat his old one.

Auburn was unranked, on the road, and served us - no question. 2 losses, I can live with that looking at our schedule, doubt any Big10 could say the same.

OSU, Purdue, and WIS? Yes, the class of the Big10+1, but I'd happily match your top 3 (I'll spare you including MICH), against any of the top six from the SEC - this is not the year for that matchup.

Zook? Don't even..... we had him, we know. I'd put Meyer and a team of freshman against zooks all star seniors any day. He can recruit, he can't coach. We've got the record to prove it.

I had to come back, because I recall with distinct distaste a few years ago when UF was in the outback bowl and we got our asses handed to us by Iowa. We ended up leaving in the 3rd :\ And this ties to a discussion I had this morning with a WIS fan, who pointed out all the bowl wins by the Big10 over the past few years. So, I almost want to point to some Big10 success....but then again, I realize the bowls often are lopsided and aren't a fair comparison of conference competition. I suppose the only real gauge of one conference against another would be regular season matchups - a point to which I will have to give demerits to the SEC ... again ... while the other majors are at least trying to set up interesting home and away matches with one another (TX-OSU, MI-ORE, etc). Yeah, I could throw CAL-TENN into that, but I don't want to give TN that much credit :|

I've also been to every outback bowl Florida has been in.
Purdue has played no ore sand is about to lose. Kentucky is more solid than Purdue, hell South Carolina is. "You are basing your opinion totally on the fact that you like the big 10. Ohio State, Wisconsin, or Purdue could not ever have a one loss season in The SEC. Plus, to probably know nothing about the Rivalry Auburn has with Florida. Auburn always brings it all against US. In 1994 when Auburn was suspended, and Florida was on top, they kicked our ass. rivalrys are always tough games, and Florida has Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, and Florida state as major college rivalries. And these teams are generally marquee teams. Teams in other conferences cringe when they have to play one of these teams let alone all of them. Now add South Carolina as a good Club this year, and Kentucky. two teams we play every year too. Now tell me again why the Big 10 and Purdue are so tuff?

I <3 u TLB!

I cringe when thinking we'll face FSU this year, it's hard not to get giddy at their drop in ability in recent years, but I was there for the 'Choke at Doak'. Seems a lot of my memories are losses when I look back :\

Every year there is the rivalry schtick - everybody has one, and a lot of people want to think theirs is the best. I suppose ND will be acting as though Navy is it's rivalry game this year ;). But having lived in OH-IO for a few years, I have to nod to OSU-MICH as a strong rivalry. Not better or worse than our UF-FSU or UF-UGA, just different. And for those living here without more rivalry than that, it gets pretty damn big for them.

Now that spurrier doesn't coach the gators, the biggest rivalry in football MUST BE OSU/Mich.

Fuck Spurrier.

Beanhead: every conference game in the SEC is a rivalry (except with kentucky, vandy, and MSU). Hate is the most beautiful thing in the world. <3

I may be being a tad biased too, but the stats do agree with me. osu/mich definitely has the biggest rivalry in college sports, but there is not as much competition in the Big 10 Just like the ACC. flaring two good teams in the entire conference, and this year is definately a bad year for the Acc. the SEC is always stacked with talent. Florida is a young team and they really needed a loss to put them back in perspective. I think it will be good for them in the long run. If Florida can beat Lsu and win out, they have a good chance at the National championship. But you can never discount Florida state, we have beaten them three times in a row and they are going to be out for blood this game.

beautiful :)

i'm pulling for LSU, *gasp*, this weekend. i hate hate hate florida, although i'm not terribly fond of LSU either. i just don't want to see USC at #1 for a very, very long time. :)

I've been thinking some more, and while everyone feels their rivalry is the biggest, and-or their conference is one of the toughest (few boldly claim the role of top dog among the toughest, understandably) - but I was thinking....

Last week, nobody really argued with the Oregon-Cal game being the biggest for the weekend. Kind of a dud weekend in general, IMO, other than that game. But looking over the season - how many weekends have universally BIG games going on? Not ones important to the fans of the involved schools, but games that have the national attention, or at least a buzz about them for the week among the talking heads? While I'll admit I'm a bit brainwashed with SEC mentality, I was hoping that this group overall could try to objectively look back over this season, last season, and develop a feel for which conferences have 'buzz' games more often?

Cross-conference games have their own eneregy, such as Tenn-Cal or LSU-VT, but beyond those *special* games which conferences can generate watchable games on a consistent basis? Having ranked teams involved obviously puts weight into the situation and pulls media attention onto the game, but beyond that what do you think? Big10+1 has maybe 2-4 games all season that the 'nation' would watch - OSU vs MI, PennSt vs whoever is conference leader, maybe a WISC game against OSU or MI....but not a lot of interest. The only love the ACC gets is token at this point - yearning for the olde FSU, UM, VT, or maybe even BC myths that are long gone. Big12 has TX vs OK State (and the lack of them getting the GameDay this weekend is what brought this thought to mind), and there is the 'Red River Rivalry' which quite frankly I bet half the nation turns off anyways. Pac-10 can generate maybe 3-4 games that the nation cares about, and almost always it involves USC. But in my assessment, as objective as I can muster at this point, it really feels like the SEC *does* get the nod as the better conference overall simply because there are MORE matchups throughout the season that get attention and buzz, and they involve more than just LSU and UF. Thinking of UK vs USC last night as a prime example - probably an abberation, and heavily influenced by thier high (too high? I dunno, maybe not) rankings - but the point stands. Alabama vs a few teams gets big buzz, UGA vs some teams gets the love, TN gets some national looks (even when they don't deserve it).

I know Jefe is sitting their shaking his head saying "TLB is drinking the SEC or East-Coast-bias kool-aide", and maybe I am without knowing it. And while I know every one of you can throw me some conference matchups that are important...to you...how many can you throw out that are important to everyone else? Or at least worth watching? How many can you think of from the other conferences, which reflects how much buzz and love they earn?

Just curious.

to all you SEC fans... I know the Big 10 doesn't look like the powerhouse conference it was years ago. but what can Ohio State do against that? absolutely nothing, besides pulling a move like they did last year and the year before that and schedule a Texas team that is usually pretty good. also, starting a year after next OSU is playing USC for two years straight.

it isn't our fault that Wisconsin, Michigan, and Penn State just aren't that good this year. oh well, the Buckeyes will have to do what the Buckeyes always do - dominate the Big 10 through and through and make it to the National Championship game.

if OSU wins out they will be in the National Championship game. and then they will lose. the Buckeyes simply have no place winning the NC this year - if we go we will get slaughtered.

i cannot stand florida, the state, so i won't really touch the last segment of your sentence. :)

florida as a school....well let's just say i'm an auburn fan. :)

Big Games? definitely Alabama- Auburn , Tennessee-Georgia are some of the top of the SEC. Everyone knows lm a diehard gator so I'll leave those out. Virginia- North Carolina, Florida State- Miami, Texas - Texas A & m. This is what my dad has said Since when I was two "You can win the sugar Bowl, beat Florida state and beat Tennessee. But if you dont beat Auburn and Georgia you aint done nothin'"

The illini vs wisconson should be a fun upset

anyones favorite school as pathetic as mine? (Minnesota)

I see, lm sorry you guys only have like10 miles of coast line, mobile bay :p :p ! Florida just needs all of the salt water it can get and thats a fact. Ive barely ever left Florida and certainly never been North of Tennessee and west of Pensacola. Are you mad because you guys don't have Mangroves? Its too cold, they don't grow! Here's a Joke you may relate to us with. why does the Saint John's River flow backwards? Georgia sucks!:D Look at it on a map, it flows from south to north.

Florida would go undefeated if they played OSU's remaining schedule? LoL! That's too funny.

OSU still has Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue, Penn State, among others.

Florida lost to an unranked, what makes you think they'd be able to get Illinois, Purdue or Wisconsin? Again, they lost to Auburn. Unranked Auburn.

Dude Wisonsin is #5 in the country and undefeated. What do you mean they aren't that good?

And Axl, the Big Ten is very good this year. A load of good teams: OSU, Wisc, MSU, Indiana, Ill, Purdue.

And Iowa, PSU, and Michigan are decent. Not great but I bet they will all make bowls this year.

They only really bad two teams are Northwestern, which is an academic school anyways, and Minnesota.

Big 10 is imo the 2nd best conference behind the sec, and I'm not really completely sold on the sec yet.

why would anyone want to leave the state of Florida? it obviously is the cultural capital of the United States... ;)

smotpoker - I was high on Wisconsin in the pre-season, but have you been watching their games? I am simply not impressed. BJ Hill does look very good, but I think that is all that they have. they have been winning their games, but not with much personality or style. however, they could very easily beat OSU (who is not 4th in the nation good, at this point).

dude i love the big ten, but i can think of 3 maybe 4 teams out of the Pac 10 that are better then the best team in the big ten
