The Official NCAA Football 2005 thread

All of this talk about USC is just utterly disrespectful to the game of college football. Does anyone else agree that they would take USC a hell of a lot more seriously if they weren't playing St. Rita's School for the Blind every week? Come on, join a real football conference like the Big 10 and then we'll see if USC could make it through a whole season.

ahhh yes...is it time to refresh my skills of blasting every myth about the Pac-10 being a weak conference? :D

Rollin_to_Oakenfold - your elementary-school antics seem to only reflect your lack of knowledge when it comes to the great state of California and its deep pool of football talent. Come to think of it, the Big 10 has a losing record against this supposed weaker conference over the past 5 years. And was it just me, or did I see USC destroy both Iowa and Michigan in consecutive seasons in major bowls? At least their championships are respected and hold claim to one of the great runs in College Football history, while OSU's last national title was carried by a man OSU fans loathe. Oh...that's a rich championship story to tell your grandkids some day. :)

Teams not taking the 2-time defending champions seriously...what a hoot.

Can you imagine if one preseason back in the '90's, the Bulls brought back a healthy Jordan and a healthy Pippen from last year's championship squad, and every other team in the NBA LOST several players, and some people STILL predicted that the Bulls wouldn't repeat?

I hereby suggest that anyone who doesn't consider USC to be the PROHIBITIVE favorite to three-peat be ordered to share his hallucinogens.

Time for some SEC talk of the day.

Tennessee is going to be a powerhouse, watch out for them... Don't ask me the specifics... I just know.

Florida is going to have a good run, but will probably for the first time in YEARS get embarrassed by a decent Kentucky team this year.

While Kentucky hasn't had a team since like the 1980's look for them to actually make a splash this year I don't expect them to win a lot of games, but they do have some talent, and are just coming off suspension, and the coach is poised to be jobless if he doesn't have at least more than 3 wins to boast this year ( this is my team to watch guys that's why I know about them ).

To change the confrence... We'll talk about the big East, who with the addition of a very talented ( god it pains me to say this ) Cardinal team is going to be quite the powerhouse in its own right or at least that's what I hear. I forsee A buncha upsets this year... almost like what college basketball was last year... only not so much.

LOL anyway... that is my two cents (it's not much)

LapDawg vs the state of Ohio

Ohio has it's work cut out for them :)

My beloved University of Miami Hurricanes will struggle, Georgia will be a major contender in the SEC but my highlight this college season is going to the Harvard vs Yale football game :) I'm going to the Geek Bowl! =D

whooohooo :)

Interesting nobody is mentioning Oklahoma, are they pretty much a write off now?

^^^I personally think the Big XII is as overrated as the PAC-10 is perceived as weak

Hey Jefe, just checking in with you to let you know that I'm STILL on the Trojans' cock, just like I was back in midseason '02-'03 when the monster fully revealed its lethality, lest I (again) be accused down the road of johnny-come-latelyism. ;)

Query though...is the PAC-10 susceptible this year to the same "top heavy" criticism leveled at the ACC in hoops, what with the SEC, Big 10 and ACC all fielding stronger mid-pack clusters (at least from the early season projections)?

On the NCAA mascot furor, does anybody NOT think the NCAA's heavyhanded attempt at social engineering is ludicrous? I mean, it's not like any of these teams are nicknamed "Wampumtraders" or "Firewaterlovers". If anything, I would think many Native Americans would feel the mascots pay homage to their tribes' resilient spirits.

And Wetzel made an excellent point...how is it reasonable to conclude that "Fighting Sioux" is offensive, but the Notre Dame "Fighting Irish" moniker isn't? Ferchrissake, Notre Dame's leprechaun mascot practically screams "drunken Mick saloon brawl".

Wetzel had an amusing suggestion on how to stop the NCAA's heavyhandedness...just tell 'em the Seminole is gay. That'd PC-stop 'em in their tracks. FSU "Semenholes", anyone? ;)

i won't speak for other people, but personally when i see a team that is supposedly embracing their native american heritage and then proceeds to dress their Illini chief in PLAINS INDIAN clothing... i get a bit miffed. granted it's fun to shit on stereotypes and completely disrespect the traditions and religion of another culture, but why don't we have things like the mississippi cotton-picking negroes or something like that if these names are just all in fun?

native american mascots = teh suck. just because an exotic other is under-represented do we have the right to use their lack of power to associate our national history with something more romantic than greedy expansionism? i'll be the uptight guy, as per usual, feel free to call me the uptight guy. but if we continue to shit on native american culture we might as well have college teams that make a mockery of the holy communion during their halftime show as well, altering the lord's prayer and throwing wafers onto the field. i mean, it's all right to make fun of baby jesus or crazy mohammed as long as it's in a systematic way, right? fucking around with the native drum and making ridiculous chants, using incorrect regalia... it's the same thing- only we feel alright about shitting on native culture for some reason.

all good points everyone is making.

Now that more people are talking, maybe I should change my OSU vs Michigan prediction. Buckeyes will win. As stated by other people previously, they DO have pretty much every one coming back from last years team, who I personally saw make UM look like a bunch of clowns. It will though, be very close.

USC will fall this year cause they lost Leinart, or however you spell his name. And the reason I picked ASU to knock them off is they play at ASU, if it was at USC it might be different.

If USC does infact play Ohio State, USC WILL LOSE. Why?

BECAUSE OHIO STATE IS THE DYNASTY KILLAS BABY!!! LOOK WHAT WE DID TO MIAMI!!!!!

I need to stand by the Buckeyes. As Lee Corso says in the 06 football game while putting on the Brutus mask : There's NO WAY the Buckeyes are gonna lose!

^they lost Leinart? Really? I didn't know he was playing Canadian Football. :D

GB - it's difficult to know what to expect from some of the teams in the Pac-10 this year. Prediction-wise, it seems like UCLA and Oregon are due to bounce back up to strong winning records, and ASU should have a similar season as last year. Cal might take a step back, but with Tedford leading the charge I wouldn't be surprised if they put together a solid season w/ a comfy non-conference schedule. Wazzu also should bounce back with their experience. Oregon State should also be pretty decent and w/ Willingham coaching UDub, the Pac-10's looking very good in terms of team depth. And then there's Arizona...supposedly on the rise too, but I'll believe it when I see it like '99.

Someone really needs to lay off the pipe if they're quoting Lee Corso. 8) 8)

Glowbug,
Don't worry I'll definatly post pics of me at the geek bowl. :)

I'm surprised the NCAA didn't deem Demon Decons offensive? How can any team with the name Demon in the middle of the bible belt NOT be offensive?

About as offensive as "Blue Devils."

Perhaps the southernors get all of their "evilness" out of their collective system by naming their sports teams that they're SUPPOSED to get out of their systems by doing drugs and having sex.

ahh the mighty double Bud tower of Westerville. for two weeks my crew had a contract at a corporate office across the street from that building and I couldn't help but stare and drool at the plant.

Drool---at a BUDWISER plant?
Goddamn, and I thought our regular school beer (Molson, who also provides half our public funding) was bad---but thank god I went to school somewhere in Canada so I never have to drink bud in college

Oh, btw, Mich, undefeated until they lose the bowl game:(

Find how many Irish Catholics there are in Notre Dame---then find out how many Native Americans there are at FSU or any school with a Native American mascot.

With basic reasoning skills, I'm sure you could process now why one is offensive and one is not.

Thank you.

you cant compare fsu to the other schools using indian nicknames they have full support of the seminole tribe.
'
more importantly this is the first year of the weiss regime at N.D.!!!! he has 10 returning starters plus darius walker (who could be the 2nd most talent rb behind bush) could be a scary combo
