Omfg!!!

RSA 299/4 from 32 overs

Without a doubt, this is the greatest ODI ever played. Cricket doesn't get anymore exciting than this. Foxtel really is paying for itself right now.

In the context of good cricket - Go South Africa!

They are favourites now, even with the 2 recent wickets. 2 hours ago, not a bookmaker in the world would have layed Australia ..

Gibbs was absolutely on fire.

Someone should burn this match onto DVD and export it to America.

I love cricket!

60 to win off 35. This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sitting here watching the score on cricinfo update every two minutes and my heart is pounding. They couldn't win, could they?

Well done South Africa. That is probably the most insane sporting event I will ever bear witness to. Amen.

why the fuck didnt ponting bring the field up in the last few overs when hall was facing? instead we let him get easy singles and get boucher on strike. ponting is a terrible captain

I don't think he's terrible, however, bowling Mick Lewis at the death was just unbelievable, the most uneconomical bowler of this bloodbath given the responsibility of stemming the flow.... what can you say.

It raises the questions though, Gillespie, Tait, even Watson, why are these guys sitting in changerooms or in their living rooms, whilst blokes like Lewis are given the reponsibility of bowling, or, well atleast filling in a bowlers spot...

Honestly I starting to think maybe Ponting threw this game, he had 4 other bowlers who'd all been 3 runs plus and over better than lewis, yet he sent lewis in, I was absolutley dumbstruck by the decision....

Anyway, tests starting this week...

[edit] I have to take my hat off to South Africa, and in particlular Herschelle Gibbs. The real winner last night was Cricket.

Thank fuck NZ mopped up the Windies. Though it did take losing the ball after Gayle smacked a six onto the roof, then Bond extracting reverse swing from the replacement. He, He, He, how cool is cricket?

(It was uncanny the inswingers Bond was bowling were the same deliveries my mates can't pick in X box, Ricky Ponting)

Only the Windies can have an opener called Ganga.

Bichel, Kasper, Tait, Gillespie, my nanna...... would bet any money that this attack could defend 400 let alone 434.

Holy fuck did we lose last night? That is unbelievable.

So we lost the one-day series?
(sorry, I haven't heard/watched any news all weekend)

God damn.

Yep Australia lost the game and the series.

Australia loses to Bangladesh.
Australia loses the Ashes.
Australia can't defend 434 in a one day match.

In the words of Reverend Lovejoy, it's all over people. We don't have a prayer.

^^^ that's a little harsh dude, it was a one of belter of a game on a flat, unforgiving wicket...

I know, at one point I was wondering if both teams using regulation bats or some kind of super dooper double width bat. But still, as Ponting said there was no way they should have gotten that total, regardless of the pitch or the size of the ground (which did look pretty small on TV). South Africa beat the previous chasing total by about 100 runs. When the pressure was applied to the Australian bowlers they simply couldn't handle it, apart from Bracken.

Surely this is a sign that the era of Australian domination is slowly coming to an end?

I don't think that's the case, Lewis was the one who couldn't handle it, in the context of the game, most of the bowlers bowled well. I just can't understand why Gillespie, Tait and Watson are sitting around watching... it's got me completely fucked...

I guess it depends on how you look at it - was the score a result of good batting on a flat track or bad bowling? I didn't see the game live, all I can go on is the figures.

Lee 7.5 overs 1/68 - 8.5 Runs an over
Bracken 10 overs 5/67
Clark 6 overs 0/54 - 9 Runs an over
Lewis 10 overs 0/113 - 11 Runs an over
Symonds 9 overs 2/75 - 8 Runs an over
Clarke 7 overs 1/49- 7 Runs an over

It could probably be argued that because Australia got the same total then you can write it down to the pitch etc. You could look at the South African bowling figures and see similar numbers. However, I would argue that Australia has better batsmen than South Africa, and it is way harder to chase a total than to set one. I don't really think that the Australian bowlers bowled that well but I didn't see the game live so maybe I'm wrong.

No matter which way you look at it, I still find it difficult to believe Australia cannot defend 434, under any circumstances.

don't get me wrong, the bowling (save bracken) was pretty ordninary, but the pitch was a belter, fuck all movement, and short short boundaries.... well yeah, what a fucken game anyway...

Oh man. I sooooo wish I had been able to see that match.

A few points:

Lewis might have fucked this up, but he was the guy who won it for you against NZ in Wellington (NZ chasing 322, needed 6 off last over and only got 4). So it was a legitimate decision to turn to him again, surely?

I'm sure these guys were using regulation bats, but bats today are much much better than they used to be. Instead of the sweet spot being a small part of the bat, it's pretty much the whole bat. So it's much, much easier to hit boundaries.

One difference between the teams was that SA took a couple of amazing catches (especially the dismissal of Gilchrist) and Bracken dropped a sitter for the Aussies.

Congrats to SA, but also to Australia. Probably the only time you will hear a phrase like 'Hussey provided solid support' used of a player who has scored 81 off 51 balls [Sky Sports Australia].

Best game ever? I still think the 99 semi was better, in terms of being closer, tenser and for higher stakes. But this one must have been pretty damn close.

And the Kiwis won their test. Woot!

Hmmm, I dunno I reckon Ponting should have pulled Lewis. Fair enough, he did well in New Zealand but last night he was going for 11 runs an over! He was basically getting pounded for the entire innings and Ponting kept bowling him. But you can't blame everything on Lewis - poor guy.

Hopefully this match will be available to download somewhere - I would love to have a look at it.

Yeah I kinda feel for the guy, nothing worse than getting smashed to every part of the ground, and he was literally smashed to every part of the ground, and being given the ball again, over after over, still like any coach will say in any sport, when things arent going right, get back to basics, he looked like he was trying to pull every trick in the book to stop the flow, but just ended up putting it right onto the Saffa's bats....
