It's still a very high risk strategy, and to be a really good test player you need to be able to make the sensible runs too. Like Hussey in the first innings, putting on a century for the last wicket. I can't imagine Symonds being able to do something like that.

DIEGO! you're back! never leave again! never leave again...:D

No, thats what we in the business call a "bowler" :)

and my point is, is that Ponting refuses to give him decent spells, only a couple of overs here and there. This is the first test ive seen him have a decent shot at the batsmen (especially the higher orders).

how could you possibly call a guy who has scored 12000 first class runs at 43 including 38 centuries a bowling all rounder when he averages 37 with the ball and has only taken slightly more wickets than matches played?

Symonds is selected in the team as a batting allrounder. Its what the selectors have been looking for. Hence having dropped a batsman to play an allrounder. Symonds is a great 1 Day cricketer because he is a big hitter who can score quickly and is a handy bowler with his mediums and offies. Even though he has picked up a few wickets in this Test it doesn't mean he is a good bowler, the age old adage "shit takes wickets" applies to Symonds, even Mark Taylor has taken Test wicket at an average of 5! KB is right, he can bat, but he can't bat in Tests, he doesn't have the technique, ability or temperment to carve out a true innings. His innings yesterday was basically a 1 Day innings as he was told to go out and have a smash and thats what he did. He is not anywhere near Gilly in terms of ability so there is no way he can consistently bat the way Gilly does and as I said before Gilly is able to play a true innings too.
You gotta be kidding KB to suggest Gilly is under pressure to hold his spot! Haddin will most definately be the next keeper even though he isn't the best keeper he is the best batsman of those below Gilly and the way international cricket is now a keeper is picked on his batting not neccessarily his keeping ability. Gilly is an automatic selection, he hasn't made runs lately but he does have a big workload and looks tired. I would imagine they will start resting him in the 1 Dayers that aren't important to freshen him up. Manou is a good keeper but will probably never play for Australia same as Wade Seccombe and Campbell. Sadly I think the days of brilliant keepers are gone. Never again will we see an Ian Healy or Rod Marsh because now we basically select great batsmen who are competent keepers, not great keepers who are competent batsmen. As brilliant a cricketer as Gilly is, it isn't because of his keeping ability its because of his batting.

PS Manou for Aus Social Mod!

I must have missed his recent fine form with the bat. What a wonderful knock he had yesterday - walked out there. took his guard. and then walked straight back to the pavillion.

You need to stop thinking he's Bradman incarnate, he's been in pathetic form since the ashes.

I don't think Gilly is Bradman incarnate at all. He has been in a form slump of late. All cricketers go through them from time to time. Gilly is the only member of the Test team who has been in there for a while who has never been dropped. He walked out there yesterday with instructions to smash it from ball 1, it didn't come off for him. You can't seriously deny Gilly is a good cricketer. I don't think he is a great keeper, but u can't deny he is a great batsman. He can take bowling attacks apart in very short time. This is Gilly's first significant form slump and to write him off would be stupid. Look at Hayden, people were calling for his head at end off the Ashes and look at him now, dominating everything. Australia will not have a new permanent keeper til Gilly retires, he wont get dropped, they will just start to rotate and rest him a bit more.
I really hope Gilly plays for a lot longer because he is the reason that it isn't neccessary that we have an all rounder because when he is in form and our middle order is sorted out Australia could play 5 bowlers enabling McGill to continue to get a game. Also if Gilly goes then Haddin comes into the team and he is a fuckstick. If Gilly was to suffer some career ending injury I'd start a campaign to get Healy out retirement and bring back Lehmann!

He hasn't needed to perform really - others have. So he might be in a slump, but he'll come out of it.

Honestly, if you drop him, you're fucked. I mean, that would be absolute total lunacy.

A big fuck off to the SCG trust for banning beer at the test. It's no surprise it was the lowest 2nd day crowd for a new years test in a decade.

WHAT? They banned alcohol? Is this because it was family day or something? Its bad enough at the MCG having to drink light beeer unless your in the members (which i've been lucky enough to go into, love having mates who are members).

My tip is that this Test is going to be a draw. Australia managed to dig themselves out of a big hole thanks largely to the late efforts of Gilly and the angry dwarf (macgill).
KB it looks like Manou can start brushing up on his internet skills because as Diego Blunt suggested he has more chance of being a mod in Aus Social than playing cricket for Aus.
South Africa wont have time to put the match out of Australia's reach and then bowl the Aussies out. I doubt Smith has enough balls to make a declaration that will keep the Aussies interested in the chase especially since Steve Waugh isn't leading the Aussies. He is one of the few captains who would have a fair shake at really chasing down any total regardless of the unlikelyhood of actually getting there.

Nah they didn't ban alcohol, just banned full strength beer in the outer. But they might as well have. I bought 6 light beers at $4.70 each before looking at my wallet and giving up.

I wish i'd gone today instead of yesterday though. I have a habit of always choosing the most boring day fo the test to go to....

Andre Nel must have the most unfortunate abbreviation to a name I've ever seen, childish I know, but funny all the same....

Hahaha gold, never occured to me. Saw a thing on the cricket show about Kallis and his "partner Cindy Nel". Spose he is banging Andre's sister or something.
As much as Nel seems to be hated, I reckon he is alright. Firey white line fever kind of guy but is alright off the field. Its same reasons other countries hate McGrath I spose. Pretty disapointing that some dickheads in the crowd at the Tests have been making racist remarks at the "non white" south african players, calling them kaffirs and shit like that. It might not mean much to us but obviously to them its pretty offensive to them. I don't think you'd hang over the fence and call a sri lankan, west indian, indian or whoever a black cunt or nigger or something like that. I find it pretty embarrassing when people behave like that. These guys go back to south africa with memories of australia and australians as being racist assholes.

Great game on our hands here. As much of a wanker as Smith seems he has made a great declaration and its game on. Going to be a great day of cricket as long as the rain stays away.

*Nods*

Im finding that the tension between the South Africa and Australian players and fans, has become worse at each test for the last couple years. When i use to watch the cricket in Pretoria in South Africa we use to rip into Shane Warne and Brett Lee, But its amazing that there has actaully been alot more racial remarks said to each other on a more personal level that hasnt showed up on the Australian news!

It is very disapointing

As much as I hate to bring a political debate into TCL, but given light of recent events, their memories of auusies being racist assholes wouldn't be far off the money, there's no place for racism in sport, or anywhere for that matter...

I think it is more that its a case of a few dickheads in the crowd giving the rest of us a bad name. There were comments made about alleged racist comments by aussie players to ntini but i think it was genuinely a misunderstanding. The aussies called him Blackman as in John Blackman who was the voice of Dicky Knee on Hey Hey Its Saturday. The reference being that Ntini had a knee injury, therefore a Dicky Knee, therefore Blackman and John Blackman. In retrospect it probably wasn't the smartest thing to say and i'm sure if they had their time again they wouldn't have said it because its ability to be interpretted wrongly. Also not too smart since there is no way Ntini would have any idea about Hey Hey Its Saturday. Once it was cleared up it seemed all was fine.

Haydos and Punter building a pretty handy partnership here, both about to notch up their 50's. Is good day of cricket so far.

Dont ya love it when captains do stupid things...

Ricky Ponting letting the poms bat...

Graeme Smith giving Australia basically a whole day to bat and chase a total under 300...

Highest score ever chased in last innings at Sydney is 280something. So Aussies still gotta break a record to get the win. I reckon it was pretty good declaration. South Africa has nothing to lose. They have to win in order to draw the series so they have to have enough time to bowl out the aussies and have a score that would keep the aussies interested. They could have kept batting for another session and amassed a huge ungettable total but it wouldn't have won the game for them because no time to bowl out australia. Much better option to post a score Australia will try and chase down and give yourself a chance of bowling them out, winning the Test and tying the series instead of playing out a draw and losing the series.

I think where smith fucked up was his late declaration in the first innings, 450 runs at the end of day 2, that's just plain cowardice...

Looks like we are likely to make the target providing we don't have a a collapse. Its always kinda in the balance, a couple of wickets and next thing ya know retards like symonds are at the crease in a situation where we just need to hang on which symonds isn't capable of. On the positive side Ponting and Haydos could bat the innings out and make the 150 more runs we need. Would be good to see Ponting become first person to notch a ton in both innings of their 100th test

beech

Yeah I agree he batted for too long in the first innings. Australia has been able to bat for long periods of time and make massive totals in the past because they have the bowling attack that is very capable of bowling a team out twice in quick time. These days South Africa is really lacking a strike gun bowler. Pollock is getting old and little less potent and the way he is playing his batting may eventually surpass his bowling. They don't have an Allan Donald who can just destroy the batting lineup anymore, just a number of good stock bowlers.
