Wow what a series!

Australia sweep the Lankans 3-0 - Winning the last test with only 8 balls left on the last day of play.

My only regret is that I didnt really get to see Warney and Murali bowl more on screen.

And how's this for breaking news?

Murali reported for suspect action

Charlie Austin in Colombo

March 28, 2004

Muttiah Muralitharan has been reported by Chris Broad, the match referee of the Test series between Sri Lanka and Asutralia, for having a suspect action. Broad has reported to the ICC that the action with which Muralitharan delivers the doosra, the ball that turns from leg to off, is not legitimate.

!!!!

P.S - Great to see Katich rewarding the selectors (belated) faith in him.

Great match to finish a great series :)

I'm a little miffed that I couldn't really see any of the action what with not having foxtel and being too busy to hit the pubs for their foxtel.

Bit of a shame about Warney not getting the 519 wickets but he'll get there :)

Go you Aussies :)

CB :)

Gotta feel sorry for symonds, but he hasn't really showed the form that he's had since he exploded with that magnificent one-day century to win the game last year

Anyone been keeping an eye on Aus V Zim?? Not a lot achieved for Australia except for some big hitting displays by the Aussies. For the sake of cricket the ZCU really needs to sort out their shit otherwise they going to end up not playing any international cricket. I dare say they will lose their Test status quite soon. I for one miss seeing exciting players like Heath Streak play. Hope they sort it out.
Anyone with any thought

PS thank god for foxtel

Re: Zimb; the cricket board is having a meeting following this recent test to decide whether they should keep their international status - after 11 or so players from the Zimb team quit in strike to do with board members and executives.

a quick google will reveal the stories, I cant remember the story exactly!

Yeah the test series V Australia was cancelled because there was going to be no point playing it. It would have been an embarrassment to Test Cricket, however they still let the tests against sri lanka take place against a 2nd-3rd string team. The 'sacked' players are not playing because they spoke up against the selection criteria which they claim is unfair because it forces selectors to select black players even if they are not good enough and even at the expense of more talented white players. Basically a whole reverse (compared to usual) racism thing happening. The 'sacked' players are basically those who refuse to make themselves available because they dont agree with the policy of the ZCU.
I think Zimbabwe will definately keep their International status and be able to play One Day Internationals but unless their internal issues are resolved and their 'real' players return they will lose their Test Status. However, I believe if Zimbabwe lose their Test Status then so should Bangladesh, they haven't won a Test and are all but useless, they are pretty much an embarrassment to Test cricket which is based around the proud traditions of cricket and all that. Let them play One Dayers but get them out of the test arena until they are up to standard. For this same reason Kenya should not be given Test Status as they are not yet developed enough and would just be an embarrassment.

Seems little Murali has piked it and decided not to tour Australia for the @ Test series in Darwin and Cairns. What a fucking softcock!! Because the crowd gives him shit and because our PM commented on him being a chucker. Sure Johnny Howard isn't a cricket expert but he made his comments based on the findings of the testing conducted at AIS in WA on his action in relation to bowling his doosra. It was found he throws the ball when he bowls that delivery.
Basically he isn't coming because he doesn't like copping shit from the crowd. I personally think thats pathetic. If that was acceptable behaviour for cricketers then nobody would ever tour the sub continent or the carribean (sp?) (west indies). Any player who has to field out on the boundary in these places cops a fair spray from the crowd and in particular in India and Pakistan the crowds are very vocal and take it a lot further than aussie crowds by doing crazy shit like throwing bottles, cans, fireworks and shit like that.
MY opinion - Murali = softcock
Any other thoughts?
I also think it'll be a great series, even without murali and maybe not warnie with his broken hand. I think its great idea to take cricket up north to people and communities who dont usually get opportunity to see the game live and in the flesh.

^^

I agree to a point. Murali said after the last time that he came here that he wouldn't be back. It almost got to the point where he would come, but now... meh. I definitely agree that it really doesn't matter that much. I kinda lost respect for him when he sent the Sri Lanka Cricket Board an ultimatum that he would continue to bowl the doosra even with the risk of a ban. Seriously, it has been proven that the delivery is illegal, so you stop using it. End of story.

Without Muralitharan, I am predicting a white wash to the Aussies... even with him, I don't think it would be close, but there is more chance of it being an even series...

CB.

As chanted by the English cricket fans:

Throw throw throw the ball
Gently down the seam
Murali Murali Murali Murali
chucks it like a dream

Personaly i don't think the Australian crowds have anything to do with Murali not wanting to tour. More like match referee Chris broad, who reported his doosra three months ago, and who is again going to be officiating the tour here.
He's a chucker, what's more a proven chucker as set out by the laws of the cricket. The fact he got away with it for so long, and still insists on using the delivery in countires where he think he can get away with it shits me no end.:X How would Dennis Lillee have faired if he took his aluminium bat to the sub continent after having banned here in a series against Pakistan.8)

^^^^ I think your pretty right dude. I personally think Murali is a sook and feel its a bit of a disgrace that he holds the wickets record. This isn't just because he is a chucker but sri lanka plays a lot of games against piss weak nations and generally all on the subcontinent on big turning pitches. Would be interesting to find out how many wickets he has taken with the doosra. It would be unfair to remove these wickets from his tally cos when he has claimed them the delivery has been deemed legal. It would be like not counting wickets that were given out caught behind or LBW and TV replays show it to be otherwise.
Warnie might not be the most deserving holder of the record as he isn't the greatest bowler to ever play in my mind. I thought Walsh was a greatly deserving player to hold the record having played for West Indies in good times and bad and always taken wickets and been a fearsome competitor. Unfortunately it seems Murali will always hold the record and will probably play for another 5-7 years and I really cant see anyone catching him. I would imagine he will probably end up taking somewhere around the 800-900 mark as long as sri lanka keeps playing piss weak opposition and baring injury.

PS who is everyone's most respected player in the world, current and/or past?

BUMP ...

http://dailytelegraph.news.com.au/story.jsp?sectionid=1264&storyid=1908159

what a crock of shit ... the aussie selector's are seriously losing the plot ... although this has been 'on' for a while, I was sure that common sense would play out in the end ...

Cameron White is half a step up from D3's in the City and Suburban competition .. below district cricket. Hauritz has talent, but one-day talent ...

Rightfully so, Ganguly, Dravid and the like are licking their lips at the prospect of us leaving our SECOND best spinner at home in favour of 2 up and comers that aren't even FRONTLINE spinners ... both rely somewhat on the bat for a spot in the side.

What a joke. MacGill is the man .. fuck border and fuck the selectors.

I blame Border.

^^^ I definatley agree with you on the selection of Cameron, like we need another wrist spinner at the expense of someone with the talent of Macgill. I think the selectors have judged him too harshly on his last figure's in the four match tour against India. 4 Matches 14w at 50.78 with an S/R of 84.4.
(Career 292M 152W at 29.21 with a S/R 55.5) A tour that was in Australia. If the selctors think that Hauritz will gain assitance from the spin firendly wickets on the sub continent then wtf do they thing they will do for Macgill?8(

In Hauritz's favour the Australian team is crying out for a qaulity finger spinner. He's still only young (22 yrs old) and i think this could be a great tour and learning experience for him. Remember Shane Warne's debut was against India at home where he only took 1 wicket for 150 off 45 overs and his away debut was against Sri Lanka where over two matches he only took 3 for 158 of 38 overs.

No doubt Hauritz will probably never have the talent of Warne but there is no doubt Warne beniftted from the experience as i think Hauritz will if he gets the chance. I definately see it as good long term choice on the selectors part and i hope it eventually bears fruit.

Yeah Hauritz will be a gun for years to come (and so to white in good time), but I'm not sure that blooding Hauritz in (potentially) one of the toughest series ever is a smart move. True he would benefit greatly from the experience, but it is hard to see past the short-term goal of winning the test series.

http://aus.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2004/SEP/041132_AUS_09SEP2004.html

My gripes with the squad are as follows:

Shane Watson. I just don't rate him. Why does he keep getting selected in the one day team when he has never performed up to the standard required of a top class all-rounder. Mediocre bowling plus slightly-better-than-mediocre batting does not equal a complete player. Ready to carry the drinks in the ODI team? Yes. Ready to be an 'all-rounder' in the world's best test side? I think not. That said, I'm almost certain the selector's are only putting him in the squad as a pre-cautionary measure .. i can only hope as much.

Personally, I don't see it necessary to have an all-rounder in your test team. If u do have a medium pace all-rounder, then it is important that he is a line and length bowler, rather than a wannabe-quick. In addition, he has proven himself capable of hitting the ball, but I certainly wouldn't feel confident when we are 6-200 chasing 350 and it's just him and the tail.

The Spinner's. I can't help but feel that the expensive MacGill's killer instinct and ability to turn the ball would be invaluable for the tour to India. Who he should replace out of Watson, Hauritz or White is debateable. All add a different dimension to the squad, but nothing that we can't live without, given MacGill's inclusion. Hell, why not take 17 to india?

When you look at Katich, Clarke and Lehmann ... you have 3 option's for part-time spin (although presumeably only 2 of these men can make the 11 for the first test and Lehmann is not a good bowler, besides the odd wicket). Any of these batsmen can more than make up for the ommision of Hauritz or White from a side .. especially given the far superior contribution they will make with the bat.

True hauritz and especially white can bat a bit, but not much better than brett lee on his day (who has test experience and can usually handle batting at number 9 under pressure). Lee comes in as the 3rd fast bowler in my team that has only Warne and the part-timer's bowling spin. Although this goes against what the selector's want to do and what is intuitive in india ... I am of the opinion that playing 2 frontline spinner's in a side is only a good idea if it is Warne/MacGill .. the men who can take wickets. Otherwise you are better off vacating the spot for a 3rd quick (given you have adequate part-timer spinner's .. which i feel we do).

I wonder how Martyn will go. As usual i hope he performs as i'm one of his biggest fan's .. but i'm also the first to say he's not out of the woods yet in terms of his place in the side ..

Our team is at full strength (besides MacGill) and I think we will win the series and reinforce our domination on the cricketing world. McGrath is due for a return to his best and should step up this series, especially after the recent pressure from the in-form Kasprowicz. I'm hoping that we return to the style of 2 and 3 home tours back when the indian's were our wipping boys and even tendulkar was giving out catching practice to the 6 slips and 2 gullies we had in position.

Anyway, that's just my opinion, feel free to agree or tear it apart =D

Yeah Hauritz will be a gun for years to come (and so to white in good time), but I'm not sure that blooding Hauritz in (potentially) one of the toughest series ever is a smart move. True he would benefit greatly from the experience, but it is hard to see past the short-term goal of winning the test series.
I have to agree that this is the series that will truly cement this team as one of the best ever. It will not only be a win on the sub-continent but one against one of the strongest Indian teams of all time. I was just coming from the point of veiw that if the selectors want to leave out Macgill then Hauritz is the man i would have in his place.

Given that Macgill is out, my eleven would be as follows.

Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting (capt), Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann,, Adam Gilchrist (wk), Michael Clarke, Shane Warne,,Jason Gillespie, Michael Kasprowicz, Glenn McGrath.
If i was going to play two spinners then Hauritz would come in at the expense of Kasprowicz or McGrath.(Not too sure how is going to go really)
Shane Watson. I just don't rate him.
Couldn't agree more, he might be a good hitter on his day but that will not win you a test match. I just don't see him adding anything to the team as you would have to drop a player who is a better bowler. I think an all rounder should always be a better bowler than batsman. If your top five can't do it for you on a consistent basis then you are always going to struggle. Considering you have Gilchrist at 7 then the case for a bowling allrounder is even more compelling, if the need for an all rounder is there at all. Scoring runs has never been the issue taking the twenty wickets has.
The Spinner's. I can't help but feel that the expensive MacGill's killer instinct and ability to turn the ball would be invaluable for the tour to India.
I'm not sure this is the case in India, and i'm sure that's why the selectors left him out. If the batsmen are set and leg spin is not working then that's how i can see the case for Hauritz's inclusion. Having said that it doesn't explain White's inclusion in the team. As i said i would have Macgill over white in the squad.
When you look at Katich, Clarke and Lehmann ...
I think Lehmann is too good a player of spin to leave out, i rate him more as a specialist batsman who can bowl. While it's nothing spectacular he very rarely gets carted and can take the odd wicket. As for Clarke Vs Katich there is not much in them and so i would go for Clatke just on the basis he is Right handed batsmen and the team is loaded with lefties.
Lee comes in as the 3rd fast bowler in my team
I am still not a big fan of Lee. I think a bowler of his pace should be walk up start for new ball duties. Fact is he is too wayward in lenght and width and relies on his short deliveries too heavily. Kasprowicz is in great form and can cut the ball both ways ans is a good with when the shine has been taken off the ball.
I wonder how Martyn will go. As usual i hope he performs as i'm one of his biggest fan's .. but i'm also the first to say he's not out of the woods yet in terms of his place in the side ..
Same same, he always seems to be the the one who is under the pump. It's hard to judge him on his figures as his failures are often after he has been in the pavillion for an eternity as the top order have run rampant. Great player who shouldn't have to be worrying about his place in the side imho. His batting in the first test in Sri Lanka on what were the most horribly spin doctored wickets i have ever seen was what won us the test.

I can't wait for this series to start. I think we will as always have a real hard time winning the series. I'm still not convinced that we have the bowling line up to dismiss India twice and keep them to a gettable score. When you look at their batting line up, Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman and Ganguly, it starts to look pretty ominous when you think of the runs these batsmen have posted over the last two years . Bring it on is all i can say.=D

^=D

excellent post dude. i stand corrected on the points you have made and stand in supreme agreeance with the conclusions we have come to =D

I agree with your starting squad, but its going to be a tough job deciding between clarke, lehmann and katich ... All of them are quality players and could do the job equally well.

As a side note ... I've always been under the impression that Lehmann would be a shoe-in for the first test because he doesn't have many tests left in him and after FINALLY making the side, the selectors feel they owe him a spot .. and i tell you, he'll die at the crease before voluntarily giving up the spot. With such strong batting in australia at the moment, the selector's will probably give him the quiet nudge out the door, but let it look like he retired on top.

Speaking of spin, i wonder who the indian's will have? haven't heard much of harbajhan lately, is he fit?

In retrospect, i would probably play Kasprowicz over Lee. Kasprov is in awesome form and has done enough in McGrath and Lee's absence to get a place. McGrath, Gillespie and Kasprov is an excellent spearhead, but I have to agree that our bowlers will have an enormous task ahead of them in india .. whoever gets to play.

in my opinion, this thread is one of the best in aus social .. always seems to get good quality replies.

Sings: "We don't love cricket. Oh no. We love it!"

^^^ Cheers dude, so when do we take over from Border and Hohns as selectors?;)

As for Lehmann to be honest i'm not sure how much it would take to get him leave willingly. For someone who was contemplating giving the game away after David Hookes death i think he has just seen cricket for what it is....a game, and he's just enjoying his cricket. I don't think it's a case of selection for the sake of something being owed to him. I genuinely feel his form has warranted it.

The one thing i forgot was that India lost there last test series, away to New Zealand. Singh played in that series and is named in the champions trophy squad, so can only assume he is fit, as for form, well it can't be that good, nor that of any of there other bowlers, from memory the Kiwi's racked up some huge scores but at home well what can you say. Still hard to forget his 13 wickets against us in the last series we played over there in the second test . We made India follow on and still managed to lose.8( Anil Kumble is named in that squad as well and he's another one who has great form against us...well anyone really. :\
