^^^ Must admit it's great to see some sportsmanship creeping back into the Australians game. Gilly has definitely been a shining example among the Aussies, though i think it will take a bit more than a few random incidents to change the view that we are a bunch of sledging poorly behaved cricketing bully boys. There was a funny article in The Daily Telegraph today about how the Aussies aren't too happy at Singhs exploits in the sledging stakes.Link to article
Have to say it must be hard for bowlers not to show dissent when you have a giant screen at some venues pointing out what terrible decisions are made along with the batsmen.Vehrenda Sewag's lbw decision in the first test off what was a huge inside edge is perfect example. Would be interested to hear what other people think on expanding the view on the third umpire. Personally i wouldn't have them making anymore decisions than they now do, but when you see such blatantly wrong decisions it makes me wonder, but i think that it's the ability to cop the bad decision on the chin and get on with it without a fuss that will inevitably lead to better examples of sportsmanship on the filed as Kasper showed.

Is it me or does anyone else feel like this series is just too much like the last series which we really should have won. We win the first test, get in posistion to win the second then lose, then lose the final test in fantstic game that could have gone either way. A bit early to call, just glad this is a four test series.:)

^^^Agree there, Slats is a terrible commentator but Dean Jones is even worse, he is absolutely woeful, just shit, I can't even put it into words. On the positive side I'm quite enjoying Mike Atherton's commentry. He is really good with his explanations and views on whats going on, also gives a good insight into what it is like to play against the Aussies, their percieved weaknesses and strengths from the view of an oposing team.

I didn't read the article cos dont have time but apparantly Singh sledges the bowler when he is batting and the bowler is running in to bowl at him. Pretty gutsy (or stupid) from someone who barely knows which end of the bat to hold and just gets lucky every now and then with blind swings. I'm pretty sure if I had Gillespie thundering in at me I wouldn't be giving him a hard time as he delivers the ball, even on slow decks there is still the opotunity for a pretty lethal short ball against tailenders.

I dont think our sportsmanship behaviours are more than random incidents. Ponting doesn't let the players sledge as much as Waugh did and Gilly has always had a walking policy believing if your out your out and if you know your out then you walk regardless of the situation.

Well Warnie has the world record now... I wonder how long he'll keep it ;) It would be good to see the Indians all out fairly cheaply today as well then get a decent total posted in our second innings... It's all acheiveable... Go you Aussies :)

Woot Aussies win the series!!!!!!

Very very amazing series with many interesting subjects arising from it. Clarke has shown he has a degree of class and talent, will he be able to continue it? Will Boof play for Australia again? (I really hope he does, he is by far my favourite player) Damian Martyn shows his true colours making back to back centuries and then a 97 after many doubters and people calling for him to be dropped. Katitch continues to perform and prove his value to the team (feel sorry for the poor bloke getting out for 99!! It really sucks and I can relate to his pain having been dismissed for 98 before). Brett Lee still yet to get a game, when will he get back in the team? Maybe not til playing at the WACA? McGrath shows he is just as good as ever. Consistent Kasper continues and Gillespie hitting his straps too. How great did Gillespie look bowling in a white headband with mullet flapping in the wind.

Great series win!!!

^^^

"mullet flapping in the wind" has got to be the best sounding phrase I've ever heard.

But yeah, Australia are really on top of the world at the moment. Perhaps the only concern is Hayden seems to be a bit out of form, but when everyone else is performing like a gun we can afford for players to go through rough patches.

I wouldn't suggest Hayden is out of form. I think we have come to expect too much from our batsmen. We are so used to seeing them make big scores that when they do make a few modest/average scores we start to worry they may be out of form. Openers have a very tough job and if they can just hang around and take shine off the ball then part of their job is done. When one bats like Haydos it can be a bit hit and miss, one can't be expected to dominate every bowling attack.

Its been a great series so far, and I'm glad to see that Australia have it won :)

3 batsmen out in the 90's in this test... thats a bit nasty, but hey what can you do... especially Katich's 99... you've gotta feel for him...

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the last test now, see how it goes :)

Anyone want to go see the 2nd day of the New Years Test against Pakistan? I'm due for a day of beer, sun and stickball :)

I got an SCG membership for my 10th birthday, but I expect it'll be another 10 years until i work my way up the waiting list .. by that time they will be playing all the good cricket out at Telstra Stadium :\

I'd go... in fact I'd love to go... except I'll be in Canada ;)

But other than that, that was a dismal test... highlighted by Michael Clarke being a fuckin champion :)

CB :)

Would love to come but I'm a Melb fella. So I'll most definately be at the Boxing Day Test. Hopefully this year will produce some fine weather and fine cricket, most years Boxing Day is shitty weather and slow play. But on the upside shitty weather means more beer consumed over at the Cricketers Arms or The Royal. So yeah every cloud has its silver (or amber) lining.

If anyone is up for some Boxing Day action I'll most definately be there.

I'll be there, in the members stand, drinking full-strength beer and laughing and pointing at all the plebs on the hill being forced to drink that light shit!

^^^Members Stand at any ground = wankers.

If you are resourceful enough there are ways around having to drink light beer at the cricket.

Db i'm not sure where i will be for that test but if i'm in Sydney count me in for sure. Beech i will will be at the Boxing day test for sure so some pre match beers at the Cricketers Arms could be well in order..:)

With the redevlopment of the M.C.G just thought i might add some little bits of trivia as far as attendances go at the ground.

Largest attendance firgures for single day's play in a test match.

90,800 Aus v W.I, Fifth Test, Second Day, 11 Feb 1961
87,798 Aus v Eng, Third Test, Third Day, 4 Jan 1937
87,182 Eng v Pak, World Cup Final, 24 Mar 1992 day/night
86,133 Aus v W.I World Series Cup, 22 Jan 1984
85,661 Aus v W.I Third Test, First Day, 26 Dec 1975

Largest crowd at a Sheffield Shield day's play:

32,908 Vic v W.A, Gillette Cup Final, 23 Jan 1977

Match aggregate records:

Test: 350,534 - Australia v England, 1936/37
Sheffield Shield: 89,386 - Victoria v New South Wales, 1923/24.

And finally: Benchmark attendance figures at the MCG:

The largest crowd to attend the Melbourne Cricket Ground was approximately 130,000 who attended the Billy Graham Religious Crusade on 15 March 1959, when thousands of people were allowed to sit on the ground inside the boundary fence.

Make sure you're all tuned in at 9.30pm tonight on the ABC for CRICKET IN THE 80'S

I loved the last one they did on cricket in the 70's, particularly the part about the public being able to bring eskies into the ground and the limit of "24 cans per person" =D

And you gotta love the terry towling hats and spectators shirtless in thongs and stubbies.

The 80s is when i grew up and developed my love for the game, and i can't wait to take a few trips down memory lane :D

This thread's stuck in bloody neutral...

Anyway, with the ashes coming up next year what do we all think about Foxtel getting exclusive rights? I for one think that the whole free-to-air thing is dead and buried....cable is here to stay, and if they can offer a far superior product then i'm all for it. Australian free-to-air television is in absolute dire straits at the moment, so i think most people are jumping ship and getting cable anyway....

i like Tim Lane's reasoning though...article here
