Do my eyes deceive me or are the United States playing in this tournament?? I think it's great! After spending a year in north america and snoozing my way through countless low scoring baseball games, i think it could be time for the yankees to see the light. With a population as big as their's there's no reason for a cricket sub-culture to spring up with at least a few million followers.

There are actually only 2 people in the US squad that were born in the states, even though, its good to see them participating.

Busy watching the match as we speak ... NZ really hammered them today *very amusing*

Bump

I have a mate over in India watching Australia play there at the moment, was going to go myself, but got lazier and could get my arse over there.

But this would be mad.

Should be an amazing series, at least the loss of Ponting will be somewhat offset by absence of Tendulkar depending on when both players are fit to play.

Good to see the practice of doctoring pithces is still alive and well on the Sub Continent. In the last away series against Sri Lanka the pitches were the worst i had ever seen, but i expect to see a new low in pitch standards if the reports are true that the groundskeepers have been removing grass from the wicket with a wire brush.8(

I dont think the pitch issue is any big deal. Everyone knows that when you go to India or Sri Lanka you are going to be playing on pitches that are condusive to spin. Its the way it has always been and always will be. Same as if you go to the Carribean you are going to get rock hard pitches.
Its the same here in Australia, our pitches are suited to our bowlers and are prepared accordingly. Do you think the curator at the WACA thinks to himself when preparing the wicket for a series against India "Hrmm gee I better make this a nice lifeless pitch so it is fair for the Indians". Ofcourse not, he prepares it the way he always does, nice and hard and bouncy to support Australian fast bowling.
I'm really looking forward to this series and maybe seeing Gilly have a hit up the order under the right circumstances, although it looks like he has gone cold on the idea. At the very least I look forward to seeing Shrek suck back half a deck B&H and then heading out to hit the Indians all over the park. Oh and ofcourse look forward to the barage of short pitched bowling that Ganguly (who in my opinion is biggest wanka in world cricket) is going to cop.

I can't see how you can say that Australia in anyway doctors pithces to suit our bowlers. The WACA has always been a fast wicket, it's hasn't been through any special preparation. Just as the M.C.G has always played slower and lower and the S.C.G has always been seen as a wicket that best suits the spinners. Every pitch is prepared to bring out it's best attributes not what best suits the Australian attack at the time. Btw in the last 4 test series against India played here there wasn't a match played at the WACA.;)

Of course if all the wickets in your country are slow turners and you have a strong spin attack you are going to try and produce a pitch that favours your bowlers, but there is going too far. I keep going back to the pithces in the last series against Sri Lanka but at times it was virtually unplayable by either side. Seeing two sides have a combined first innings total of 331 isn't what i like to see as a spectator. :\

Having said that got to say it's going to be pretty interesting to see how Gilly goes keeping wicket and captaining the side. I wonder what everyone's thoughts are on him as Captain. Hate him all you wan't for what had gone on in his personal life but i think that Shane Warne would make a better stand in Captain, and if it wasn't for his past indiscretions i think he would probably have been made Vice Captain of the side.

Farkin hell it makes for a dull series if pitches are going to have the shit doctored out of them

I mean steel wire brushes wtf?!?!

Im looking forward to a series where both slows and quicks can prosper and the pitches play true to the batsmen.

I hope I get to see it. :\

I agree that we do not prepare our pitches to the same extent that countries on the sub continent do but still it is hypocritical to try and nail them for doing it when we do it ourselves. A friend of mine is currently on the ground staff at the GABBA, he moved to Brisbane last summer when the oportunity arose to live in a warmer climate after having lived down here in Melb and being part of the MCG ground staff. He reckons that the curator does look at what the strengths of the Australian Team are when preparing a wicket. If Brett Lee is in flying form backed up by Dizzy Gilespie then they will make quite a conserted effort to produce a hard wicket with a grassy top. Sure its not to the same extent as other countries but come on it still happens and happens all round the world. Happens to a lesser extent in England because they dont neccessarily have the weather to produce certain decks.

On the captaincy, I think Gilly will do a good job, he would have learnt a thing or 2 playing under Steve Waugh just as Ponting has. I wouldn't imagine there will be any great difference in his captaincy style to Ponting's. I think Warney would have done quite a good job too, as would Lehmann.

Good to see Katich going well and Clarke making a go of it too.

I don't have a problem with India producing slow-crumbling wickets to suit their spinners. It ensures they're hard to beat at home, but it also means they never have a chance when they play away from home. Plus it makes for an interesting challenge, not something australia has really faced over the past decade (except last time they toured there).

Australia's making a pretty decent fist of it though, 5/316 at stumps with Michael Clarke on his way to a century on debut.

Agree Clarke is a gun, and a good bloke, went over to the West Indies last year, he was always on the piss and loved to have a chat as well

I tell ya, FOXTEL is almsot paying for itself. The first test has been an absalute belter of a game so far.

Who thinks Gilly will make em follow on if he gets them all out before the target?

^^^ After the last series there where we made them follow and still managed to lose i'm not sure.(Aus 445, Ind 171 and 657 for 7 Dec, Aus 212 ) I guess it will depend on how close they get to the target and how the Aussies feel about the prospect of batting last on that pitch. I think that if they can get them out with a deficit of 250 or more then Gilly will make them follow on. I think a lot will depend on how fresh he thinks our bowlers are as well.

Have to say how good were Clarke And Gilchrist? Clarke 150 on debut and Gilly spanking them all over the park. Even better or maybe i should say importantly for me i think was the bowling of Mc Grath. Great to see him back and as good as ever, also Kasprowicz. I was so happy he got the nod ahead of Lee for this test and if he keeps bowling the way he is i think it will take
another injury to Gillespie before we see Lee back in the side.

No foxtell at home so haven't seen much of this test:(, but i can see myself down the pub for sure this afternoon. Should be great days cricket and will be inetresting to see what happens.

Have to give a big "up yaah" to McGrath, and thats saying something coming from a Kiwi. Lesser bowlers would be pulling their bean back in county cricket but he seems to always have the goods. *Long painfull sob thinking back to Hadlee....sniff* Although his crimes against hairdressing still means he is a pill ( and with Gillespie in the team that is saying something!)

Fark, after being well placed at 2/189 the aussies have lost 8/46 to collapse and be all out for 235. Just when you think we're on top of the indians this happens. Still its early days yet and we haven't seen much of that the indian batsmen have to offer.

Yeah was some brilliant bowling from Kumble. Also some great sportsmanship from Gilly and Kasper. They both walked when they were out. Gilly walked straight away so ump didn't even need to give a decision and big Kasper walked after being given not out. I think its good to see this sort of sportsmanship shown in elite level sport. Hopefully it spreads and more players will follow this lead and some of the gentlemanly conduct that is a large part of cricket's history will return in an age where money and performance are seemingly more important than fairness and sportsmanship.
I just think its great to see since the Australian team has a bit of a rep as being a pack of assholes on the field. Its my opinion that they play hard and fair as demonstrated by the sportsmanship displayed.
