Apparently he was hit once only, and wasn't expecting it so lost his balance...the real damage was done when he hit the road (when his head hit the road really).....He was unconcious for 30 min, and actually died but paramedics revived him....fark...

So on hearing those facts, i am not sure how much the bouncer is to blame....He never should have punched Hooksey in the first place IMO, but as for blaming him for nearly killing the guy, i'm not so sure....

Opinions?

if he lost his balance and smaked his head on the ground, he was most likely under the influence, unless he was punched/knocked extremely hard.... - still, the bouncer allegedly struck him, so he has to take responsibility for everything that happens as a result of that, directly or indirectly.....

I haven't seen/heard of the specific charges laid - but it could be as high as attempted murder.....

Very true....good point.

it says he was king hit and never even saw it coming... of course he's going to fall over and smack his head.

sheesh!

I had to write a legal essay, examining a case in which a man took 1 punch and incurred life-ending damage when his head hit the ground. It just so happened that the victim was drunk at the time. The defense presented this, but the man was charged and convicted of manslaughter anyway. I'm not a violent guy, (despite my avatar) and I think if you hit someone, you have to be expected to pay all the consequences. That said, i wouldn't like one of my friends to go to jail for murder for a similar incident.

This is probably as bad, if not worse as the Fenech stabbing. In this scenario, this guy is supposed to be in a position of authority, and there to protect people from getting hurt. Doesn't sound like he did his job.

Life support switched off - David Hookes has passed away.

RIP - condolences to his family.

May the accused burn in hell.

Man this is just fucking wrong isn't it :( I'm really sad, and i didn't even really know the guy (like i feel i know Steve Waugh or Richie Benaud)....

You can read The Age article here: http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/01/19/1074360692356.html

RIP Hooksey.....after a great test career, a great coaching career is cut prematurely...may the Bushrangers go on to win the ING + Pura Cups in his honour....

Fucken bouncer violence. This is bullshit hope the moron gets many years behind bars. Bouncers are meant to there for our protection. The incident occured far to far from the entrance of the venue for the bouncer to even needing to involved.

exactly! the incident occured like 50 metres from the pub. What possible threat could David and the players been posing to the pub and other patrons from such a distance. Yet another example of a bouncer who is young dumb and full of cum wanting to make a name for himself by getting heavy with a high profile person.
I hope the bouncer spends some serious time behind bars but since he has only been charged with assault I cant see this being the case. Apparantly there was a similar case some time last year where the death of the victim was not a direct result of the assault on him but from the fall. Much the same as this case. Hookesy died from falling and hitting his head not from the blow from the bouncer.
Its terrible to say but I hope the bouncer gets whats coming to him if he does avoid serious punishment in the courts.

:(

i dunno if anyone was listening to the sports show on 3aw tonight (which hookes and gerard healey founded together in '96), but it was pretty sad, as you might expect. fucking terrible news.

RIP David Hookes. It's just so fucking pointless. I mean seriously, what was the useless bouncer guy thinking? Trying to be a tough cunt? Trying to show hes hot shit? Now someone is dead and he has to live with his actions for the rest of his life, hopefully with the next few years behind bars.

I hate useless people and this bouncer seems exactly like the type of useless person that really gets to me.

CB :\

I wonder what the general feel of the rest of the VB Series is going to be like? I get the feeling that commentators and players are going to find it harder to get excited about things....

I had the pleasure of watching Hookes playing in a charity game at my old school, still remember him hitting 6 sixes back over the fence. He did it with so much ease.

I wounder what the effect on Victoria cricket team will be, he has turned them from the bottom of the ladder to clear on top. I hope for his sake they keep winning

:(

This is just such bad news. Hooksey was just what cricket in Australia needed, someone who loved his cricket and wasn't afraid to take on the board. As a Victorian, I believe he has been great for the Bushrangers and has moulded them into a team with passion, something i believe lacking in a lot of cricketers these days. This is where IMO Hooksey has made his greatest impact on the game, as a motivator for all he encountered.

R.I.P. David Hookes

BOUNCER Zdravco Micevic, 21, has been charged with manslaughter over the death of David Hookes.

The Melbourne bouncer's original charge of one count of assault still stands.

Melbourne Magistrates Court was told Micevic would plead not guilty to the manslaughter charge.

Micevic's bail conditions were also varied in the brief hearing before Magistrate Daniel Muling.

He is no longer required to report to the Keilor Downs Police Station, but will need to provide the Office of Public Prosecutions 24 hours' notice prior to changing address and put up a surety of $2,000.

thats good news. hopefully this guy gets everything thats coming to him. According to the full article he is recieving hate mail and death threats....boohoo i know that makes me incredibly upset and feel sorry for him (note sarcasm). The jerkoff kills someone and then his lawyer has the front to comlain that he is recieving hate mail and death threats! he should count himself lucky he is not recieving blows to the head from a meathead bouncer that lead directly to his death.........sound familiar.

I minute silence just observed for David Hookes before the start of play in Sydney.

So sorry Hooksey......

I know I have stated otherwise previously in this thread (venting anger mostly) - I don't condone an eye for an eye. I believe more in what goes around comes around (insert other similar sayings here too).

Also with more publications about previous beatings at the Beaconsfield hotel, if I were the owner I would be putting up a FOR SALE sign as I don't think anyone will go there for anything now.....

we all have stories of how we were "hard done by" in regards to treatment we, or a friend, recieved from a bouncer. and even the extreme cases of permanent injury are not so rare. obviously i'm sorry at the passing of david hookes, and i'm angry at the perpetraitor of this unfortunate crime.... however i'm also angry at a system that allows this to continue to happen untill some person of high enuff profile is effected and in this case killed before anything is done about the security industries endemic violence problem.
