The official Austnet #bluelight thread (subtitled The guide for n00bs)

"ops will sit down and have a discussion"??? oh puleeeeeeeeze.....this is insane - half the ops are people who are never there anyway.....and it seems ops get handed out on a totally random basis...why is it that some new people get ops, whereas people who've been there ages and are there way more often don't get them?? and no, i dont mean me personally....i can't be assed with ops........am just sayin it all seems a bit silly......
shouldn't ops only be there to kick people if dealing is going on, or if people are spamming and stuff like that?? if they're gonna start actin like nazis and have "discussions" about what topics can't be discussed in the channel, i vote we just leave and go make another channel....sheesh, make a #harmminimisation if u want sumwhere where we can't be silly and talk about whatever we want!!! but, leave #bluelight how it is - a fun place where we can talk about almost anything........and don't let the mods go on a big elite power trip....hehehe

OK, the following people are #bluelight IRC ops:
primus
Thoth
Mirage
Jakoz
applesbliss
Dante
wazza_
KiTTyLiCiOuS
luro
blufluffybunny
BigTrancer
apol|o
tribal_alien
Pleonastic

Well I belive it should be up to the users of the channel what the rules should be. Most of the users are friends, the channel is mainly used for socialsing, and I think thats the way it should stay. No Rules! ('cept for no drug dealing)
The OPs job should be to kick anyone drug dealing, and thats it.
But in the end, its up to Luro to decide, since he 'owns' the channel.
gleep

I must say, The only reason I would boot someone is if they are doing something wrong.
If ANY one booted someone off cause they are talking about AFL then they are bveing sad and pathetic. and I would also say *ARE YOU SERIOUS???*
IRC is a free for all guys. Talk crap, dribble shit. All that is needed is you don't sell/deal drugs or whateva, and don't spam! SIMPLE.
If anyone disagrees then let me know.
Its IRC man... I've got better things to do than sit around and control what people want to say about something in a chat room.

You see? This is the reason I avoid social.
Austnet IRC #bluelight started as being an Aussie version of the Bluelight IRC channel on the angel server. Stick your head in there, and you'll see that it's not about Bluelight, it's just a chat channel.
I'm working on an idea for a Harm Minimisation Only irc channel, where people can come and ask serious drug discussion questions and get answers, rather than watching screenful after screenful of garbage scroll past. Yep, it will be a quiet channel mostly, with very little interesting to read for the most part. But there's nothing wrong with a little peace and quiet, particularly if the times that there is action in the channel, it's decent quality harm minimisation.
It's not trying to make IRC serious or impose rules on a Social aspect of Bluelight. It's not a cynical attempt to segregate the IRC people into Social and Drug Discussion groups. It's an attempt to create a positive tool for harm minimisation on IRC. For me, Bluelight has always been about harm minimisation, so I want to bring that aspect to the IRC community. So keep your eyes posted for news.
BigTrancer :)

omg BigTrancer in Aus Social? whats the world coming to?!?
anyways, on topic.. IRC is like the international mecca for mindless activities.. if you think you can control it, you will be sadly mistaken.
let us have our fun. if you dont like the conversation why not go find something else to do for the next 15mins? by then the topics most likely gonna be different - except for that bizarre "fuck" incident...... *shakes her head*
to the ops: please remember that you are no better than any of us, just because you have the ability to control the channel situation doesnt mean you should..
*hugz #bluelight* i love this chan.
stace.

There hasn't been any change in channel policy with regards to topics of discussion. It's still based around BL themes (drug information and harm minimisation) and general social / scene chat. Almost anything goes, just use common sense. Any Qs feel free to /msg an op. :)

posting from uni, wishing i could join irc from here. the firewall here blocks anything thats not http. does anyone know of a way around this (ie. a site that performs http tunneling) that wont involve installing a bunch of stuff??

Lucas, u answered your own problem, www.http-tunnel.com ... thats what I use sir!
(edit) wooppsss.. didnt read the install bit, just got a little too excited and pre-maturely posted.. :P

Um, you can download a version of HTTP-Tunnel that doesn't need to install, and it's tiny as well ;)
You've just got to hope that your OS has all the necessary files. Luckily, the PC's at my uni do have them :)
