The official antidepressant/psych meds thread

I agree with K'd out...if you ask your dr. for an SSRI, I'm sure that he would be more than happy to RX one for you, as they have close to zero abuse potential...Plus, I know several ppl with ADHD that are on a combo of stims and AD meds. Like, prozac and ritalin.

Currently on:

Prothiaden (dothiepin) 150mg at night (TC antidepressant)
Valium (diazepam) 30mg/day, gradually reducing to nothing
Seroquel (quetiapine) 3-400mg/day (100mg when needed for anxiety)
Subutex (buprenorphine) 24/mg day, initially for codeine withdrawal but it does more for me than any 'psych drug', so I'm staying on it!

Used to be on:

Every well-known antidepressant invented since the 90's (none worked!),
benzos of various descriptions, various antipsychotics (to control anxiety)

...as I said, you'll get a much bigger & accurate reply if you post this in TDS!

im currently taking Remeron (zispin!) 30mg/night.
still going through withdrawl from efexor, i had to come off it from a dose of 225mg in jst over a week, ouch! Had a nasty reaction to the withdrawl too, so had to go bak into the hosp the other day.

apart from that, been on olanzapine & celexa with little luck.

Im also getting fucked off and stressed about the fact that the docs will never, or never seem to prescribe me any anti anxiety meds like benzos for when im a crisis point. they seem to think zopiclone will do - when in reality does fuck all for me, even trying to get to sleep. I just feel they look at me and think 'oh, look at him, hes going to abuse them'. im in the uk by the way - i wish they gave out medicines like in the usa over here.

Just started Mirtazapine 30mg/night. Actually find it helping as i can sleep at night and during the day i'm actually close to being normal. On thing that really sucks about it is i am eating heaps!! i think its like the remeron with the weight gain :p .

I used to be on Zoloft but i hated that wiht a passion, was a cranky bitch if i did not take it but i didnt feel any improvement when i was on it. Coming off it was hell!! I had headaches, was thowign up and was just a real bitch to everyone around me for about three weeks.

Reason for being on antidepressants i have depression and a really screwed up sleeping pattern where i am awake most of the night or i sleep for days on end. mirtazapine is helping me regulate my sleepign pattern and makes me not such a miserable person.

36 year old male, diagnosed with ADD just this year.

My current cocktail, which is working wonders for my ADD with depression and anxiety looks like:

focalin 20mg. 5mg pills taken 4x day
(this is dexmethylphenidate a more active isomer which is
supposed to be twice as strong as regular ritalin)

klonopin 1mg as needed'
zoloft 100mg
wellbutrin 300 mg

THe ritalin and ADD diagnosis just started this year and is a godsend. I had been treated for depression since I was 17 and took a load of meds. The following is from memory:

imipramine 300mg
norpramine 200mg
prozac 1 green and white pill, 20mg?
trazadon no mempory
wellbutrin 400mg
zoloft (up to 400mg/day at one time)
remeron 30mg
provigil 300mg
caffiene 4 200mg nodoz/day

Most of the AD's got me out of really bad depressions, but I still couldn't
concentrate or focus. I thought it was just me at the time. but things started to decling and by total luck I found a doctor who specialized in adult ADD.

Just thought you'd like to know, Mirtazipine IS Remeron. :D

Speaking of that, i just ate two plates of food and i'm still hungry! Good thing I get that Adderall...

Male, 47, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, occasional Panic, Depression
Current meds: Celexa, Buspirone, and I have self-prescribed Neurontin.
All are working quite well, especially the Neurontin for anxiety/social anxiety.
Former Meds: effexor, worked OK but it gave me high blood pressure.
Other former meds: Elavil, stelazine, mallaril, ECT (these back in the darker ages of psychiatry when I was misdiagnosed with psychosis as well as depression).

Yes, I forgot to mention I also underwent electroshock therapy a few months ago. Probably did it 12 times. It did nothing for my depression. But it has left HUGE holes in my memory. I recommend AGAINST ECT for anyone who is offered it.

a question for squids

Hey Squids,

My doctor has been suspicious for a while that I may have adult ADD, and said he might try a few days worth (he knows me well enough not to give me a lot!) of ritalin to see how things go. Just wondering, on the stuff you're on, does it cause you any difficulty sleeping, or is that where the klonopin comes in? I'm interested to see what effect ADD drugs will have on me, but I'm a shit sleeper already, and I can't see stimulants helping the matter!

I take focalin, the d isomer of ritalin which is supposed to be more powerful than regular ritalin 5mg pills every 3 hours 4x/day. My last pill is around 5pm. I have had no difficulty sleeping or any other side effects. The klonopin is for social anxiety, A completely different matter. The focalin/ritalin was a miracle to me. Suddenly I could get stuff done and even organize my day planner. Some things I still cannot do, and that's probably 36 years of habit. I am going to get an ADD coach as well.

I've been a heavy drug addict in the past (coke and opiates);clean now for5 months. My doctor knows all this and still gives me the monthly 120 focalin pills. He says it will help keep me off drugs by allowing me to function.

One thing I've found is that a lot of doctors don't believe adult ADD even exists. I somehow got lucky and foundthe ADD specialist inmy area.

Good luck
Mike

I forgot to mention, they do give benzos like klonopin to help you sleep if the ritalin keeps you awake. I don't need it personally, but I've heard others getting it for that purpose.

Diagnoses: Bipolar type 1, ADHD, GAD

Drugs: Depakote, Lamectil, Adderall and Ambien

I dont really remember all the meds that've been perscribed to me but I do know that it's quite a long list... 2 separate docs said lamectil was basically the only treatment option availible besides ECT.

I got hallucinations from Seroquel too Schizomanic. I don't really understand exactly how that works considering that Seroquel is an antipsychotic.... (anyone care to explain??) I have heard of such a thing as a "paradoxical reaction" where someone responds to a drug in exactly the opposite way one would expect for reasons not understood. Is this one of those cases?

I knew i wasn't the only one! They also weren't just "strange things (that you see) just prior to falling asleep". They were definately full blown hallucinations. Did you tell your doc about it? The staff at the inpatient clinic i was in just told me to go lie down. Those bastards...

Yes, a paradoxical reaction could definately be possible. And you said you take adderall, but you experience mania. I've known someone who takes adderall and they have mania, but they were also taking depakote. Is that what stabilizes your moods, even on the adderall?

Tramadol HCl for treating ADD

I started this as a new thread, but thought it would go better here, since there are quite a few of us that suffer from ADD.

Tramadol HCl in combo with pendopin may soon be on the market for treating ADD/ADHD. Just another drug in our arsenal to help us/abuse.
Here's some more info on it that i mostly copy and pasted due to my laziness.

ULTRAPAN (tramadol/pendopin)

• Seizures have been reported as a rare side effect of treatment with tramadol. The risk of seizures may be increased in patients who take more than the prescribed dose, have a history of seizures or epilepsy, have head trauma, have a metabolic disorder, have a central nervous system infection, are experiencing alcohol or drug withdrawal, or are taking certain medications. Talk to your doctor about factors that may increase the risk of seizures during treatment.
• Do not drink alcohol while taking tramadol. Alcohol may cause a dangerous decrease in breathing and/or liver problems when used during treatment with tramadol.
• Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Tramadol may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.
• Tramadol is not approved by the FDA for use by children younger than 16 years of age.

•[!!!!] Tramadol is habit forming. Physical and/or psychological dependence can occur, and withdrawal effects are possible if the medication is stopped suddenly after prolonged or high-dose treatment
---------------------
ULTRAPAN -- white, circle tablet
ULTRAPAN XR -- blue and purble, capsule

5, 10, 15, 50, 100 mg avail

(currently not FDA approved for use of ADHD)
(FDA approve slated - 2004/2005)

The usual dose seems to be 15 to 20mg. Since pendopin is in the mix with tramadol, it can be taken once MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, AND FRIDAY. You will still feel the effects on the days you don't take it due to the pendopin.

SIDE EFFECTS OF PENDOPINAND TRAMADOL IN COMBO
-dizziness
-chapped lips (chap-stick can alleviate this effect)
-drowsiness
-exaggerated feelings of elation (well-being)
-change in heart rate
-vasodialation
-fall in blood pressure
-blurry vision

Tramadol alone would not be effective if taken on Mon. Wed. and Fri. But, pendopin can help keep the tramadol flowing the chemicals you lack on Tuesday and Thursday while taking it on Mon. Wed. and Fri. That is the main reason why pendopin is added. Pendopin might be added in other medicines for other conditions to help boost them. Such as Zoloft. With pendopin, it might be possible to only take Zoloft on Mon. Wed. and Fri, including Sun. It depends on what your doctor recommends. BUT - pendopin might not be safe with other meds besides tramadol, so furthur studies must be completed on pendopin.

Any comments?

I'm bipolar, so I have way too many meds to count...
But lemme say this, I hate Lexapro, it has only made my depression worse, among other things.

Yeah along with the lamectil

Hi Everyone- very interesting thread - thanks for sharing all of this info..
I was attracted to this board to find out more about the potential hazards of using MDMA whilst taking anti -d's

Age : 31
Sex: Male
Rx taken : Thyroid pills 2 a day to help with hyperthyroidism(spelling?)
Effexor - was on 250mg per day but have weened myself off VERY slowly to one 35 little tablet every 2 days

Previous meds : Zoloft - This drug was good at first but soon turned me into a zombie - I started taking it before going overseas and ended up spending most of my time on the net obsessively doing nothing and just being a dead shit. No motivation, just wanted to drink cans of coffee and play xbox all day :(

When i came back early in 2003 i started taking effexor until now. I can definitely say it has helped with anxiety and sorting out some areas in my life. I still smoke way too much weed (more than 10 buckets a day) which needs to be addressed i think!

The effexor has helped me get motivated enough to enrol in some CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). My first session is in a few days and I am interested in getting stuck into this due to all of the positive write ups i have found in journals and on the web.

I am having some full on side effects from reducing the effexor. This is one of the days where i dont take any of it - and now late in the night I am getting weird rushes and bouts of dizziness and irritability. Today I went to see the new LOTR movie to try and chill out but I just fidgetted and got bored all the way through it :(

My goal is to be totally Rx free, but deep down I think that I may suffer from adult ADD. My friend has been diagnosed with this disorder and at one stage I tried some of his medication for a few days. Only later did I realise that he was being prescibed good old ampehtamines in tab form. No wonder I was feeling great and thinking clearly :P The fact that I previously had a pretty heavy speed habit may have also affected my positive impressions of this 'trial' :P

Ok - sorry i have crapped on enough. Basically - anti d's can be a tool to reaching a better place to heal your life. Sometimes you just need a little chemical help to get your brain chemistry on an even keel.

Hang in there anna, there are obviously a lot of us out here that can emphasise with you :) *hugs*

ilovelucy, I hated Lexapro too! The psych told me that he wanted me to try the whole 6 weeks worth of lexapro and so I did, but in that time I gained about 10 pounds, I slept near 18 hours every day, and couldn't function at all.

I thought maybe it would get better, but it never did, so I just quit taking it. That was in mid-October and I'm still kinda weird from it, but it's a lot closer to "normal" for me. I think I'm just going to ask him for a xanax prescription or something I can take a few times a month when I get really freaked out, instead of being zombified all the time.

Did the Effexor alleviate some of the "ADD" symptoms you are experiencing? When I first noticed the effects from my Remeron (which like effexor also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and seretonin) I noticed that my ADD symptoms were somewhat under control and i could pay attention. You may be on to something, tell your doc about it. I did, and now i'm prescribed a medicine more specifically for my ADD.

The norepinephrine reuptake inhibition is what is probably helping you out.

I'm probably typing nonsense, at least that's what it seems like to me.=D
