the official 2008-09 NCAA football thread!

they could win. but they match up with Ohio State perfectly... save for the fact that OSU has better athletes all around. I am not scared. teams like PSU and Illinois scare me.

who does Georgia play this weekend? do you think Moreno still has a chance at the Heisman?

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Despite playing in less than half of his team's games so far, Ohio State tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells still thinks he can win the Heisman Trophy.

"I honestly think I can be the best player in college football," Wells said during preparations for the 14th-ranked Buckeyes' game at No. 18 Wisconsin on Saturday night.

Wells injured his right foot in the season opener against Youngstown State and missed the next three games. He returned last week to rush for 106 yards in the Buckeyes' 34-21 Big Ten-opening victory over Minnesota. [TLB note .... Minnesota.....Minne-fucking-sota :| ]

He's the team's third-leading rusher, with 27 carries for 217 yards and one touchdown.

But that doesn't mean he's not shooting for the award won a year ago by current Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.

"I like to think that the Heisman is not out of my reach because a lot of times people get to thinking that the Heisman is all about numbers and a team's record," he said. "But when it all comes down to it, it's [about] who is the best player in college football. Plain and simple."

Wells rushed for 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns a year ago and wasn't in the top 10 in the Heisman voting. Missing three full games (and almost a half of another) would seem to all but eliminate him from consideration this time too, particularly since the Buckeyes lost 35-3 at Southern California three weeks ago without him and may not be even in the chase for the national championship.

He has not played in the required 75 percent of his team's games to be listed in the NCAA rushing statistics, although his 108.5 yards per game would put him 20th-best in the country.

It was more like four feet, but no matter. That's another example of how confident Wells is of what he can do. So it's no wonder he doesn't think the Heisman is out of reach.

If he can dream, Moreno can as well. I think anyone in America would put Moreno ahead of Wells in the voting. He's still got 3/4 of the season to impress, but c'mon....unless Moreno breaks his leg, he'll probably remain ahead of Wells the whole way thru. I can't knock Wells, I mean you have to 'aim high' but this is wholly unrealistic, IMO. That said, Chase Daniels is far and away the leader in my book at this point (but I can't tell you who he's faced....I'm only regurgitating the talking head hype).
 
trash him all you want, TLB. however I say to you - if you were a college football player in one of the premier schools, and I was a fan of you, I would be disappointed severely if you did not think you were a Heisman contender - and you were in the top echelon of college football player. yes, he missed a couple games but he needs to think that he is Heisman worthy.

and I wouldn't discount Minnesota so easily. sure, they are not a great defensive team and they aren't nearly the team they used to be - but no player in NCAA history has had a 100 yard game after being out for three games.

I didn't think that OSU could go back to the NC after such a horrific loss to the Trojans. however, with so many teams falling it is certainly a possibility. after a loss, voters need to place blame on a situation that then needs to be corrected. the blame was placed on former OSU All-American QB and former starter Todd Boeckman. as well as Beanie Wells not being there. now with Pryor in at QB and a (seemingly) healthy Beanie Wells - who knows?

again, the NCAA is an ugly beauty pageant. but we do need a winner. I am confident that OSU or any SEC could beat Oklahoma, which appears to be the lock (during this week at least) for a NC appearance.

I wasn't trashing him, the author was. I, in fact, gave the props you were asking for in that players need to aim for being the best. Tebow is not H-man worthy. Not even close. If he's invited this year, it's as a courtesy for the fact that he returned to school after winning it - which, IMO, is a stupid shame. He doesn't even deserve to be invited. And that's not piling on him for crying earlier, that's a fact based on his performance thus far. Moreno? Yeah, I'd put him on the list of top 5 right now, but want to see how he fares over the course of a year. Now, as for the SEC homer-laden posters...this thread has more than it's share, but we don't get H-man votes. And those that do, don't have Tebow on the list, I'm sure. Furthermore, they aren't even considering Beanie Wells, I'm very sure. ESPN fan vote, doesn't count, but shows no OSU rep.


Don't discount MN? You mean the team that from 2002-2007 has finished 7, 4, 8, 7, 6, 11.....in a league known for having 1.5-2 good teams :\ Big woop....100 yds against MN. How's their rushing defense? Bah, I could look it up, but I'm sure you already checked your facts.
 
Glad to see I'm the one to come back and reply to this following my last statement. Just wanted to comment to Jim that I caught only the last 5 min of the OSU-WISC game, and then checked the box score before shooting off my mouth again.

I watched the last OSU drive to take the lead, and here's my thoughts. Beanie is a solid back (based on stats, not the last drive since he wasn't much a part of it). Maybe with a full season, he'd be in the Heisman talk. Missing 3 games, he just won't have enough to be in it, IMO. That said, mad props to Pryor - completely cool and in control, in a hostile environment, game on the line where you HAVE to have a TD. That (fresh)man has my respect. Even if WISC pulls...scratch that, interception as I type - game over, OSU wins. Well done, Mr. Vest, well done. Now, do it against the rest of your conference and we'll see you in the Rose Bowl :)
 
Congrats to Vandy for its biggest win in school history. Its looking VERY likely that they'll be bowl bound for the first tiume since 1984

Now that the week is over lets start hyping the LSU @ Florida game TLB.

This is a really hard one to predict....Florida isnt as good as it should be and LSU is very hard to read. That win over Auburn doesnt look as good as it once did and their last game against Miss St. wasnt that pretty. They let a horrible Miss St. offense get 24 points on us. I really like LSU's QB freshman Lee. He's played great thus far but considering he's so young im expecting a bad game to come sooner or later. This is his biggest test yet and if he does well (even in a loss) Ill have to say he's the real deal....

Florida hasnt looked all that great this year. They still have no running game. Its all Tebow and Harvin. I can most def seeing the game going either way.

Key to the game for both teams is LSU RB Charles Scott. If he has a good day LSU wins, If UF can stop him or at least limit him and put the game in the Fresh QB, UF wins.

Logic tells me UF 27 LSU 24

But my gut says LSU 31 UF 27

This wont be a defensive affair like most woudl think....

I dunno, the talent and athleticism is def there, no argument about that but look what Auburn and Miss St. did to us and they have horrid offenses

Granted, Florida's offense isnt exactly clicking right now like it should be but is def better than both of AU and Miss St.
 
One of our O-line positions is down to the 4th stringer (someone who 'tried' the position in spring practice, that's it). I don't know if it is injuries or just brain damage, but we can't protect the passer and we can't make holes for the running backs. Not to be a negative nancy, but even though we won decent this weekend, everytime I think of UF playing, I still want to throw up. This feels like a 8-5 season to me, and I have this snotball in my stomache from last year's Outback bowl telling me we're headed for another Big-11 matchup there, one we will probably lose to the likes of Wisconsin or something. Our season is a train wreck. I can't look away, but I really can't see much good coming in it. I know the team, and some others, still aim for the SEC CG, but I don't see it. Hell, the way Vandy played, I'm willing to mark them up as another win over us as well - unless they lose a game somewhere then start falling apart (very possible).

Anywho, LSU? I'd lean to your gut answer. And if we happen to win, you're not going to hear me ranting about it. Even if we do use someone besides Tebow and Harvin. (I will note, we got other running backs some decent yards in the last game :), but anything short still fell to Tebow :! ).

Here's something I read recently from Chris Leak's profile - he'd get with the team during the week to see what they felt would work well, then sit down on Thur with the coaching staff and script out the first 12 plays. Tebow looks like he's still waiting for a play to be called in with 7 seconds on the play clock. Now I know 'the spread' is reading what the defense is giving you, but c'mon you're a Junior now, you ought to be able to do some thinking and delivery of the ball by now. But again, I come back to two problems, and I don't know which is bigger - the O-line being weak or the play calling being shit-for-brains.

See, now you're getting me all riled up and pissed off at my team again, after I've had a nice Sunday afternoon.

Other games from this weekend? You know how I felt about OSU-WISC, but I'll say it one more time, the team IS better with Beanie, but Pryor is the man with my respect. I see them doing very well this year, and even better next year (I have no idea what they'll be losing, but with him at the helm, it ought to be a top team).

Vandy-Aub? I'll admit pulling for perpetual loser Vandy the whole way. I just like the underdog and am glad to see them finally doing well.

PITT-USF - shouldn't have happened. Wanstadt needs to gtfo of town. Florida homerism aside, USF should be better than PITT, and shouldn't have lost that game at home....but they did. So, fuck the Big Easy.

KY-ALA - Damn. Surprised me a bit. Yeah, the defenses are strong for both teams, but for some reason I was really expecting ALA to do a lot more. That close of a score? Perhaps I need to pencil KY in as another loss on UF's schedule. Still, as much as I don't like Saban, I'll give credit for having a kick ass team this fast, and I won't be surprised to see them in the SECCG, maybe even the NC.

UCONN - UNC - Wow...and here UCONN was riding atop the Big East for a bit. Again, I don't care much one way or t'other about UNC, but I can pull for a perpetual underdog and it tickles me to see them doing as well as they are. Yeah for them. Oh, and again, fuck the Big Easy.

ILL-MICH - Wow. Watched some of it early on, and was minorly happy for RichRod getting his team up and going early, but the Zooker and his Juice crew just tore them a new asshole, eh? New 'Big House' record for yards in a game or some such nonesense? And lost their '500th game in the Big House' to WISC the week before? All kinds of bad records getting set this year for the Wolverines. Where's Plurmonster when you need him? Heh, I'll keep my perpetual underdog theme going and be happy for ILL. I just don't want to face them in a bowl game :|

FSU-MIA - 41 to 39? Good gosh almighty! Just like old times....except it was relegated to some unknown channel, and got less viewers than Dildomania on late night QVC. I'm still giggling at the two powerhouses being down, and would relish beating both in the same year (yeah, even if they are down) just because they've kicked us in the nuts for most of my life. Fuck them both.

NIU-TENN - Barf. Please, keep Fulmer around awhile longer :)


Hmmm....a distinct lack of Pac-10 and Big-12 games to speak of this week :\ Not much interesting other than Oregon keeping my hopes up for about 8 minutes then blowing chunks. Heck, I can't even be interested in pulling for Bo Pellini in his rebuilding effort - MIZZ is just too good and NEB is just too bad (special note, it is really hard for me to pull for Bo when one of my biggest images of NEB is them running all over UF in '95 NC game....really hard, but I'm pulling for him).

That means this coming weekend ought to be a lot more fun - the Big12 start actually playing eachother's tough teams, Southern Cal plays.... :|, okay then you've got the SEC and a few more decent Big11 games worth scoreboard watching if not actual gameplay watching. I'm looking forward to it :)

Alright... I've taken a bit of a hiatus as of late, but here are my .02 cents on whats going on in the SEC East, and my predictions for the rest of their season.

1) Florida - This team in comparison to what you would expect just out and out sucks. Their spread offense has been really ineffective EVEN with the return of their supposed good WR. Tebow can nolonger claim to be superman as he has been stuffed more than a cheap prostitute on a meth binge. Their D has not been out and out amazing either. Unless something changes, they are looking at 8-5 at best this season, possibly 7-6, ESPECIALLY if my cats are healthy.
( UF Disclaimer this is in comparison to the standards that UF holds itself to, and in comparison to the talent they have played against this year. Yes they have put up points lots of them but against little better than highschool teams )

2) Georgia - These guys are supposed to be skilled, but every game they've played has been lethargic. It's like they know they are supposed to win, and by all rights are talented enough to win. I look for them to get their asses in gear coming off the Alabama loss, and really put a whoopin on Tenn. and Vandy. I think the LSU game will decide their fate though, if they haven't pulled a turnaround and start playing with enthusiasm by then, look for them to continue to slide. These guys could really fall anywhere between 11-1 and 8-5. They have the talent, but they've been flat.

3) South Carolina - These guys are hard to get a read on. I can't decide if they'll be 6-6 or 8-5 at seasons end. One thing I'm certain of though is it will be either or, I don't think they'll fall in the 7-6 catagory.

4) Vandy - The nation suddenly loves these guys, and with good reason, they are looking good enough right now to have a 10 win season (probably a school first). These guys are usually even lower on the totem pole than UK. I'm as shocked as anyone else, and I really don't have much else to say. Except that if they beat Georgia, then they are good enough to be Florida, and while I wouldn't count on it, they could really be looking at a shot at the SEC title, and possibly a NC shot. But I'll expect them to reign in somewhere around 10-2 9-3 for the year.

6) Tenn. - These guyz are the suxxzorz. And I mean that with all the empathy and care in the world. They'll be lucky to have a 4 win season.

7) Kentucky (this is my team so I feel like I know way more about them and I'm going to talk a lot about them... so for you guys who haven't payed them any attention, I'm going to talk about everything ) - Offensively these guys are not good. Currently their Oline is about as sturdy as a house of cards, there are at least 3-4 starters on that line on the injured list. And Hartline is about as consistant as the xbox 360's hardware. Then you are missing Ashton Cobb who may or may not return to the team this season, who was a go to receiver. Without being able to throw the ball they aren't going to be able to get it done on the ground. But don't count them out of games (see last 4 minutes of Ala. game). Their D is superb, though since the absence of Micah Johnson we have been shitty against the run, and look for that to continue until he's back on the field. And these guys right now rank 20th on the Sagrin. And while I'm a relatively big fan, I really don't know how the season is going to go. They could have anywhere from 7 to 11 wins this season. If they're healthy, Tebow won't win, if Georgia doesn't wake up, UK will keep the score low and gritty and could easily pull that one out. I want to believe UK is good enough to beat Vandy (but we won't really know how good they are till they play Georgia), and this should (we had better win) be our year for Tennessee. UK has SC coming up and we've never beaten Spurier so I'm concerned about that one. But look for UK to be in every game, they have a legit D, and if Hartline gets to be more consistant and the Oline gets healthy look for UK to start putting more points on the board.

The SEC east is strong, but this year it's strength is coming from the teams that are usually dwelling at the bottom.

As a Tennessee fan, I wish I could believe otherwise, but I think you're right. I think they'll only win two more games this season, those being at home against Mississippi State and Wyoming. Our offense has been flat out pathetic. Jonathon Crompton is a terrible QB who can't hand off a football, totally misses receiver, and is bad at managing the game. Luckily, he lost his job after the Auburn game. Then there's Arian Foster, who doesn't seem to fumble until the worst times possible. And of course, there's the coach... I swear Fulmer is fucking idiot. I don't care if we won a championship with him as the coach ten years ago, the fact is, he is no longer a competent coach. I didn't think the Vols were going to win the SEC East or anything, but I didn't they'd be this bad. The bad part is that it's not like the opposing teams are man handling them or anything, they just self implode. It's pathetic to watch.

you guys lost a talented Offensive Coordinator, don't blame it on the great pumpkin. It shows a profound lack of patience and "class" to throw your coach under the bus like that. (and I'm speaking to all the jilted Tennessee fans who are calling for blood right now).

Who knows, maybe UGA will cough up a loss. Its been known to happen.
 
I know, but to be far, Fulmer's decision making is questionable. And I'm not throwing him under the bus because how the season as gone thus far, I haven't been happy with him for a few years now. I'm grateful for good years he gave UT, but I don't think he's that good of a coach anymore.

And I realize that UGA could lose and UT win, and I really wish that would happen, but I don't think it's very likely. Maybe if the offense learns not to implode, but again, I doubt it.

And while I said that I didn't think UT would win the SEC East, I actually did think they would compete for it (however, unlike some UT fans, I did not think they would have at shot a the NC). Also, regardless of what I said, I do think that Tennessee can win more than two games (maybe four more wins for a season total of six... just maybe, though). If they keep playing as they have thus far though, I can't see them winning more than two. I believe his team has talent, but the mental part of this team is a huge weakness. Still, it's going to be a shitty season overall.

True, on the bright side however, we are getting Cottam (TE) and Colquitt (P) back. I doubt they help make much of a difference, though. Still, I agree, and while I think they could win four more games, it's more likely that UT will win only two more.
