the official 08 NBA playoffs thread

pretty cool to see all those teams down 2-0 make things a little more interesting last night, all of them won pretty convincingly too. (rockets didnt win by a lot, but on the road)

hoping for at least one series to goto 7 games, probably gonna be cavs/wiz

Fucking Pistons, up to their old bullshit again. Not showing up to play against a clearly inferior team. This happens to them every fucking playoffs. The only thing standing between them and a championship any given year is their own ability to not give a shit.

edit: And I put the blame squarely on Flip Saunder's head. He has to have the balls to slap his players in the back of the head when they don't have their head fully in the game and get them to focus on what's actually going on.

I suppose that having ZERO of the league's best 20 (I'm being VERY generous here) players has absolutely nothing to do with it.

They're a solid team, and all of the Parity At The Top this season gives them a puncher's chance.

But, please, feel free to leave on your Homergoggles - they weren't even "great" in 2004 when they peaked on the right week and won their only title in the past two decades.

They were excellent then, NOT great, and in the past four years, they've added absolutely NOBODY of any significance, they lost their best defender and best rebounder, they got four years OLDER (this is NOT a young team by any stretch), and traded in one of the league's best coaches for one of its worst.

Stick them in the West and they'd have been clawing for their play-off lives with the Nuggets and the Warriors.

They'll clobber Philly - who wouldn't? - and will probably squeak out a 4-2 or 4-3 series win against Orlando.

You think they're beating Boston with this team?

Really?

While I concede that the Big Fella is not quite as valuable anymore as the Suns (or I) thought that he would be when they made this trade, they NEEDED a defensively minded TEAM-minded big man to contend for the title, and Amare Stoudamire, as great as he is offensively, was NOT that man.

And, in my opinon, getting rid of The Matrix could actually be a net positive - he's a freaking stat machine, as we all know, but this is NOT fantasy basketball.

He (like Joe Johnson before him) seemed to place more importance on his own stats and on his next contract than on his team's success . . . and when you've got Amare as an offensive juggernaut entering his prime, and an absurdly classy and unslefish Nash exiting his, they NEEDED to make a move.

Shame we have to watch Suns-Spurs as early in the play-offs as we do (AGAIN).

But I still love this game!

I think it's hilarious to watch you all write off the Pistons after one lackluster effort. Philly really doesn't have a chance against Detroit, you all know that.
LOL! Well at least my teams going to be movin on to the next round. How do u lose to the 76rs? How about the magic today.....

Now come on LL, to say that they were a fluke, or somehow didn't deserve to win the title they did is definitely an incorrect categorization. You are playing down a team that was 1 win away from back to back championships. And I understand that close is only good in horseshoes and hand grenades, as they say, but then, after nearly repeating, they went on to have the best record in the league and looked to be able to challenge the Bulls' record of season wins going into March. (Oh and the Pistons won in 90 and 91 remember :) )

You do make valid points, however, about the age, the lack of coaching and the loss of the defense-centered strategy that won them the championship.

You make valid points, as well.

Thank you, huntmich, for being one of the people on this board who can capably debate point-for point without ever making things or taking things personally.

Repect,

LL

oh you guys are so adorable here with your giggling and playing grab-ass amongst yourselves.

the Cavs squeaked by the Wizards today in what is proving to be one of the more emotionally charged series of the playoffs this year. LBJ seems to average about 30 points a game in the playoffs, that is a rather impressive Jordan-esque stat.

the Lakers are manhandling Denver, it's funny to see the Nugs struggle while the 76ers are rallying against Detroit (one of the traditionally tough teams to play in May).

all in all this is the best pro basketball playoffs opening round of my whole life.

Is this surprising to ANYONE?

They're going to manhandle Utah/Houston, as well.

San Antonio/Phoenix/New Orleans/Dallas might pose a challenge, as will the team who just lost a playoff game to the Hawks.

But anyone who has been hating on Kobe and has been underestimating his VALUE in all of those seasons that he either:

(1) Threepeated ("Sure, but that was Shaq's team");

or

(2) Placed a bunch of scrubs on his back, and to took them to the verge of beating extremely talented well-rounded Suns' teams ("But he was so selfish");

or

(3) FINALLY, this year, has a competent second-best player, and is FINALLY in a position of being BY FAR the best player on arguably the league's best team . . .

. . . might want to reconsider their stance on the relative VALUE of Mr. Bryant.

Or, in the alternative, people can keep their Kobe-hating-based-completely-on-non-basketball-related-issues and miss enjoying getting to root for the most complete basketball player of our lifetimes.

He's been the league's most VALUABLE player for every second of the past 4-plus seasons, and he's just ENTERING his prime, but some people refuse to be objective, and THAT'S how you get idiotic MVP results like "Mailman over MJ" or "Anyone in today's NBA (Nash? Nowitzki? Are You F'ing Kidding Me?) over Kobe."

Jordan should have won at least 10 MVP's, and unless he gets hit by a bus, Kobe will end his career having been the league's dominant player for at least that long (in a MORE competitive league).

But please voters, give it to KG, because he, like Nash, and like Nowitzki, is a very good player on a very good team, and he never allegedly raped anyone.

I L O V E T H I S G A M E !

Well we are done with our series, piece of cake. Go orlando! Next........ Oh is detroit done with the 76rs yet? no damn, guess we'll kick our feet up and wait on either detroit or philly.......why is detroit dragging their feet on this one?? chop chop philly is garbage.....

WOW, what the fuck is up in ATL !!! does anyone think that MEGA EPIC upset is possible ? joe johnson n' josh smith are BALLLLIN

come on Boston, you are the number one seed and Final favorite - and you can not sweep the eight seed?! Bibby, Johnson, and Smith did play one of their finest games ever and I don't recall ATL losing at home in April (although I'm sure they did). imagine if Boston had to play a team with a .500 record... let's say -- the Wizards. they could have been out of here for foolishly losing two games.

Boston may be the trendy pick to win it all this year but as I said earlier I think that their lack of playoff experience is going to lead to an ultimate lack in playoff prowess.

mega epic upset possible? yes. likely? no, not at least this round. I think they will make it past ATL but not past the Cavs.

Kobe is just unstoppable, with Gasol and Odom, the Lakers are unstoppable.

I would laugh my ass off if Boston got owned by the Hawks, I just hope atl can keep up their energy on the road.

Go Cavs.

Go Magic.
