the official 08-09 NFL thread

the predictions and results have been split off to a separate thread to make things cleaner. predictions in there, discussion in here.

the nfl 08-09 prediction thread

can i propose that people all use the same method for listing their pics - this format:
Kc @ atl
ari @ Was
tb @ Chi
Mia @ ne
Cin @ nyg
Hou @ ten
car @ Min
Oak @ buf
Det @ sf
No @ den
Stl @ sea
Cle @ bal
Jac @ ind
Pit @ phi
Dal @ gb
Nyj @ sd
copy the list from the previous post in the prediction thread if you have to. then bold all your picks (in firefox it's really easy - highlight your pick and press <control><b>). keeping all the picks in the same order makes it much easier for the person who adds up the scores.

thoughts?

looks like the start of a fun-filled NFL season. my Steelers look good enough, despite the Eagles getting the best of them last week with something like 8 sacks. holy offensive line. what shocks me the most is that in the first two games the O-line held up surprisingly well. at the sports bar the Philthy fans were obviously directing their shouts and Eagle waves in my direction, with my black and gold gear. if I wasn't recovering from a very decadent evening the night prior, I would have said something smart. instead I just took the loss and ate my chicken wings and drank my beer. act like you have done it before my friends, even though it has been a couple years.

Monday Night Pittsburgh VS Baltimore. should be a great game only because "Fast" Willie Parker is injured and is not playing. can Illinois's Rashard Mendenhall step it up under the bright lights of MNF? this is his chance if he wants to be a star. Baltimore is the same old Baltimore, a great defense with a lackluster offense. they always play the Steelers well. we will see what happens. are the Ravens contenders or pretenders?

the AFC looks very interesting. the Bills lead the AFC East, the Titans lead the AFC South, Baltimore leads the AFC North, and the Broncos lead the AFC West.

I love it when the foundation is turned upside-down in sports and in life in general.

It does look like it's going to be fun-filled, so many story lines to follow.

Can Vince Young get his emotions in check and lead his team to the playoffs?
Matt Ryan has started off 2-1. Can he turn around the luck of this franchise?
Brett Farve hasn't started off well. Will he prove to himself that he should have stayed retired?
Tom Brady is out for the season. Can the patriots utilize the rest of their talent and win?
The Vikings are possibly the most talented team to do so little so far. Can Frerotte help them?
Aaron Rodgers has showed us signs of excellence so far; can he keep it up?
Indy has started off lame. Are they at the end of their run with the current team as it is put together?

And it goes on and on ... this is gunna be something else. The parity that we have seen so far in the season is awesome and refreshing to see.

^ seriously? I am as happy as the next guy for Buffalo's recent success, but those are some strong words.

is their schedule that favorable up until Week 7? is their defense good enough? who do they play in Week 7 that you think will beat them, anyways?

Yes, yes, and Denver. I'm not even sure if Denver will beat them. I haven't seen enough games to guarantee they won't, though.

Nothing. What will you do if I'm right?

i'll congratulate you on a great prediction.

if there's no penalty for being wrong, there's no risk which makes any prediction pretty worthless. imho, of course :)

one example. in the past, i've changed my avatar - to the logo of a football team that beat the patriots - for a month, as part of a reciprocal deal with another bluelighter in here.

That reminded me that I had to change my avatar.

But that offer seems better suited for a bet, where you both have something to lose.

^ in that case, it was a bet.

i just feel that talk can be cheap and it's not that special to make a prediction if there's no penalty if one is wrong :)

Well to get back on topic a bit ... I missed last weeks game, tell me, did the Patriots show ANY signs of life, anything promising, was there something or someone that you can point to to give me some hope going through?

the single wing direct snap offensive alignment was rather hilarious in it's efficiency. formations like that can work, possibly and surprisingly, for one game. however, I bet right after the game every team in the NFL conjured a way to stop that alignment.

I jumped the gun on being over the loss of Favre...Why does Rodgers have to throw 3 picks the day Brett goes for 6 TD's?
