Travel The MEGA Travel Thread!

Can anyone tell me about the availability of drugs in Thailand?
What kind of drugs can I buy at the pharmacies? I hear it's easier to get drugs in the northern part of the country compared to Bangkok and the islands in the south. Also, tell me a little about Cambodia and Vietnam.
I'm going to spend at least 6 months in the region very soon so I'm doing all the research I can at the moment.

Cheers

Trying to get valium, xanax etc from pharmacies is hard, i tried in many different and had no luck. Drugs are available but the laws are harsh and if you're buying from someone in the street or on a beach you're probably about to go to jail or be bribed.

Much easier in Cambodia and Vietnam to get good drugs over the counter and opium, weed and mushies are available everywhere. Cambodia and Laos too are the best places for druggies, 'happy' cafes and drugs sold at bars and by taxi drivers. Really easy and semi legal, sort of. Just don't be too open about it.

Do you need to have shots? I hadnt even thought about them to be honest - I was too busy thinking about chilling out on the beach.

20 days for me :D

Nothing is neccessary but you are advised to get Hep A and be up to date with polio, tetnus, diptheria etc. You'd be just as well to get them, you just have to pay for the prescription.

I'll tell you one thing. Drugs are more available than I thought originally. You just have to know the right people. You can find it in bangkok but I still wouldn't risk it.

In terms of pharmacies, I've gotten valium and xanax without prescription but I heard some places will not sell it (probably the more touristy areas). It is illegal for them to sell it to you without prescription though.

I couldn't even get valium or xanax in non touristy area pharmacies. I had to get a local I befriended who was a surgeon at her parents hospital to steal me some. :D

Yabba (meth) can be gotten if you know local people who do it but I didn't ever get round to trying it.

I'm not heading to any rurual parts for an extended period, but i would definitely recommend getting your Typhoid and Hep A - if you then go back to the doc in 6 months for a hep A booster, you're vaccinated for 20 yrs. I would also get a tetanus shot and your diptheria. My doctor has been to SE Aasia many times and he doesn't even bother getting all the 'suggested shots'. As like deja, a lot of people don't bother getting shots, especially if you're in touristy areas, but i've seen what typhoid can do to someone, and hep a is actually very easily transmitted from simple bad hygiene. I also want to start trying for a baby around this time, and simply don't want to risk getting sick (when it's easily preventable). I'm not a 'worrier' or someone who is scared of life either (in case you were wondering) ;)

My travel agent also advised anyone going to Chiang Mai to be very careful with insect repellent - get something with DEET in it - one of his clients contracted Dengue Fever a few weeks ago. There is no vaccination or medication for it, just prevention. It's not a biggie, i come from a mosquito capital so it's kinda second nature. Contrary to popular belief, it's not malaria that's the danger - i'm not taking anti-malarials, but i will take a good quality insect repellent.

You'll have plenty of time to get your shots now - just make sure it's around a fortnight before or more :)

So, i'm wondering how severe the flooding currently occurring over there? :\

My dads in Thailand at the moment, hasn't ventured up North himself yet but he's been advised against it because of the bad weather.

Where were you planning to go? I wouldn't go to Phuket.

Phuket isn't a bad place at all... it's a huge island with a varied environment. Granted, Patong and Karon are busy and undesirable, the rest of the island is beautiful. It's not like you're going to get away from that environment anymore by going to Koh Chang or Koh Channg or Koh Samet or anywhere else anymore, either.

^I've never really had any problems with getting diazepam or alprazolam.... in Banglamphu there is a small pharmacy that will dispense pretty much any benzodiazipine, even midazolam and temazepam. Jamshyd took me there one night after we mowed down on some sushi from Zen @ CentralWorld.

I dont like Temazepam and much prefer Lorazepam as it feels cleaner and theres not usually the groggy head the next day.

Im just going to do the Im sleepy hands to head gesture in the pharmacies and see what they offer :D

It has been my dream for many years to go climb the limestone overhanging cliffs by the ocean. Hard sport climbing very very fine limestone! :D

One dream trip is Thailand for 2-3 months then Indonesia for 2-3 months. Climbing --> Surfing. My baby the whole time <3

You won't get much that way, in my experience. Ask for what you want by name, in Thai language if possible. Most pharmacies won't sell anything controlled. Upcountry, only diazepam and alprazolam are readily stocked anyway.

I tried the cant sleep routine when asking for drugs by name wasn't working and they just gave me antihistamines.

They'll do the same when you make the sleepy hands gesture, in my experience :\
You just gotta know which pharmacy to patronize.

I heard it was easy as fuck to get steroids in thailand.

I wouldn't have a fucking clue. I didn't see any Thai people that look like they're auditioning for next season's Jersey Shore in my years in the Kingdom though.

Interestingly, the last time I went to Phuket (March 06), as soon as i got to the hotel, I wandered to the chemist and asked for cold and flu tablets. I actually had the beginnings of sinusitis and a cold - the woman gave me a sheet of 30 120mg pseudoephedrine tablets and told me to take 2 at night if i was tired and wanted to dance (wtf??). I then said "well, i have a little jet lag, is there anything you could give me to sleep?" She gave me a bottle of 10mg valium. win! ;) In saying all of that, i didn't go there to score easy pharms, this really blew my mind.

I cracked up :D I seriously only wanted something for my sinus - and the pseudo did the trick. I'm not a fan of pseudo anyway - it leaves me edgy and feeling sketchy even after having a cold/flu tab. The valium wasn't unwelcome though ;)
