Anyone familar with Koh Samui at all?
I realise that it is much more on the touristy side than what is being discussed in recent posts but thinking of tying it in with a week in Bangkok, week in the city, week on the beach sort of thing.
Any recommendations for particular areas or hotels? Does not even have to be Koh Samui as far from set on that particular destination but would like the journey from Bangkok to be not too much hassle....
I like a bit if nightlife but sure there will be plenty in Bangkok to keep me occupied in that respect.
I spent a week on Samui, with my mom, a few years back. We stayed in Bophut, which is a 'fishing village' on the northern part of the Island. It is much quieter than Chawang. We spent a few nights out in Chaweng, which was fine. It is noisy, touristy Thailand, but it's fun in those respects.
Flights to Samui from Bangkok used to be solely available on Bangkok Airways, but I think more airlines are now flying to the airport (if not the BKK-USM). The Bangkok Airways flights are common, relatively cheap, and quite nice.
We spent a day in Angthong marine park , two days diving, and a few days just hanging out. I'd definitely recommend Bophut over Chawang for accommodation.
In Bangkok, there are a few location options for a hotel or guesthouse. Staying by the river is nice, but further from much of the action. I've stayed at high end hotels both on the River and in Sukhmvit, and would stay in Sukhmvit or Silom rathern than the river. Banglamphu (the backpacker are, including Khao San rd) actually has some nice accommodation available away from the hustle of Khao San.
Oh, and stop by Zen @ Central World for some sushi while you're there, Jamshyd has some pics that will convince you if you're skeptical. (Jammy, you do you still have those?) It's supposed to be open again (It was burned down by the "Red-Shirt" UDD protesters).
We stayed here: http://www.thewaterfrontbophut.com/
The service was excellent.
