If it comes down to not hiking or doing it alone...I take the latter. The most I am gone is 4 hours and if I am alone I stick to trails I am familiar with. My husband found me a man to hike with and I have found a few people but they are not as consistent as I am which is why I took up running in the woods. That will take me less than an hour. So I text my husband before and when I get back to the car. The solution would be for him to get his ass out there with me!

ultra exotic? yes. mysterious? yes. far away? no. but since it's been mentioned several times, i felt i had to pic spam, because it seriously is the crown jewel of the American South, and maybe the crown jewel of all North America.

lafitte's bar --- it has no electricity. it maintains it's the oldest bar in new orleans, nay, the oldest bar in all of north america 'settled by civilized people'. it has been in the same spot, same building, since 1772.

yes, that's how it looks. no, it's not Katrina remnants there. it's been eaten alive by the swamp, not the storm.

Anywhere specific should check out? I am trying to avoid the tourist meccas and see the seedy underbelly a little bit. Clean living here requires a little grease once in a while, know what i mean?Costa Rica is beautiful! I went a few years ago with some family and it was great. Torrential downpour for a few days straight, but that didnt stop us from having a good time. We road tripped through most of it, staying in a series of hostels. Trekked through the rain forest, was absolutely awesome. The food is great, but it gets old considering they eat rice and beans with every meal. I highly recommend visiting, although it isnt a place where I can see myself living.
