Wonderful photos, Care :)

I'm dead keen to get some hiking boots and show my husband around SE Qld when we move up there, there are so many beautiful places to hike. However; before we leave Victoria, I really want to hike part of Wilson's Prom.

^Thank you m'am. Ive really been falling in love with the Sierras recently, so many amazing things to see and do. Im trying to get passes/a group together to do the high sierra loop backpacking route before the summers over but if not there is always next year.

Damn Care, those pictures are amazing. I can't even tell where the background ends and the foreground begins in some of those shots. Very beautiful camera work in an even more gorgeous environment. I wish I was in the West. It makes me sad to think that Wall Street wants to decimate the Redwood trees...it just does something nasty to me inside...I love seeing those pictures though.
I'm going to the Adirondacks in the last week of August, so I'll put up shots of my adventures soon enough. The mountains we got out here ain't much though. I still LOVE them. The Adirondacks always makes me feel superhuman, timeless, serene, etc. Updates coming soon!

If it comes down to not hiking or doing it alone...I take the latter. The most I am gone is 4 hours and if I am alone I stick to trails I am familiar with. My husband found me a man to hike with and I have found a few people but they are not as consistent as I am which is why I took up running in the woods. That will take me less than an hour. So I text my husband before and when I get back to the car. The solution would be for him to get his ass out there with me!

Being the photojunkie I am....

Peaks of Otter Bedford, VA. Almost 4000 feet above sea level. Elevation gain 1340ft

Talk about puttin' the pussy on the pedestal....;)

Over my dead body. The national parks were created specifically to prevent that kind of exploitation. One look at Yosemite and its painfully obvious that it would make one of the worlds most profitable strip mines, and im sure the powers that be wouldnt flinch at ending the funding to maintain roads and hire staff (which park fees dont even come close to paying for). But so many people love the parks, especially here in California, that the political backlash would be massive, as it should be.

I dont have any pics of it, but about 100 yards from the trailhead to taft point in yosemite there is a huge quartz vein, right out in the open. Literally many tons of pure quartz just sitting there in a translucent boulder, then if you get to the edge of taft point and look down you can see the 20 foot wide vein snaking its way down the 3500 foot drop, pretty incredible.

There is actually another granite glacial valley (just like yosemite valley, but smaller) in the northern part of the park called Hetch Hetchy. Unfortunately it was dammed up many years ago and is now a lake, a damn shame.

If any of you are ever in California I urge you to make the trip to Yosemite, it really is one of a kind spectacular.

Yeah, but I'm not talking about the national parks (yikes, I didn't even think about the fact that greed wants to do away with those too!), I'm talking about the private lands whose trees had no vote in their demise. But I guess that's pointless to worry about, it still affects me to know that Wall Street people have so ruined a natural treasure, literally the lungs of the earth.
I GOTTA see Yosemite though. You are right. How high up are you in those pictures at the top of those rock formations? Was that a big, all-day type climb?
That looks so amazing!

Its about 2500 elevation change(less actually but it goes up and down a little) and seven miles one way to the summit of clouds rest. But like ive said, you can drive into Yosemite valley/glacier point and see almost everything if you arent into serious hiking. beware of crowds at these spots though, especially on the weekends.

Ill list some hikes I reccomend.

Four Mile trail- Starts Near Glacier point, so very easily acessable. Very centrally located in the valley so you can see everything. Very steep though, as it ascends into the valley so starting at the top and taking a shuttle back to glacier point once youre at the bottom is a good option if you dont want to go both ways. Moderately crowded.

Taft Point/Sentinel dome- Great, easy short hike. Not much elevation change or stairs and you see some pretty cool stuff. Moderate crowds

Yosemite Falls- very steep trail that takes you to the top of one of the most impressive waterfalls in the world. I nickname this hike "the relentless stairs". Basically 3.5 miles of stairs, but an awesome end result. Moderate to high crowds.

Half Dome- A great experience if you want a challenge, and to be able to say you did it, but its a very difficult day hike. The stairs and cables at the end are dangerous. Great waterfalls on the way to the top. Very Crowded

North Dome- A longer drive, but a relatively easy hike that gives you a full frontal view of half dome like no other. Relatively remote starting location. Low Crowd factor.

Clouds rest- Best overall hike IMO as far as the end result. If you want a challenging hike, but cant get passes to go up the half dome cables this is where its at. You will see very few people at all.

i just remembered this thread, which i gave sort of a joke answer to back on page 1. however, since i was a little kid i have always wanted to go to machu picchu, and in april, i am going. i am spending all my savings, but shit, what am i waiting for? i started to get anxious that my health would fail or that i would be 73 before i felt like i could afford it and be too decrepit to go.

¡225 days to go!

ultra exotic? yes. mysterious? yes. far away? no. but since it's been mentioned several times, i felt i had to pic spam, because it seriously is the crown jewel of the American South, and maybe the crown jewel of all North America.

lafitte's bar --- it has no electricity. it maintains it's the oldest bar in new orleans, nay, the oldest bar in all of north america 'settled by civilized people'. it has been in the same spot, same building, since 1772.

new orleans also has an abandoned six flags that Pander really wants to explore:

yes, that's how it looks. no, it's not Katrina remnants there. it's been eaten alive by the swamp, not the storm.

Any vacation advice?

I will be spending the week of christmas about 100 miles south of cancun with the whole fam damnily. Ma, kids, bro, sis, nieces and nephews. Should be pretty nice despite the fact that we will all be together. jokes, ok? anyway, i will have the whole next week all to myself, complete freedom, before coming back to the north north. Never been south of the border before. What should i check out? Someone suggested Costa Rica. Lotsa things i would enjoy there I think. Any input?

Oooh, I know you'll be getting some good responses here.
We have a travel thread also you may want to search for and dig through to see if you find anything you'd like to check out in there!
I've never been outside of the US but I hear Costa Rica is beautiful, I hear much of Mexico beautiful.
Where all would you be thinking of going? Do you have a certain distance you're looking to travel?

I went to Guatemala last January and I'm dying to go back. Google Semuc Champey--it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet IMO. It's a river, surrounded by steep jungle cliffs, that dives down into underground limestone caves and then pours back out in a massive waterfall. The water that flows from springs in the cliffs ponds on top of the limestone making these amazing terraced pools of warm turquoise water that you can swim in. It's a bit of a hike up to the overlook where I took this picture but worth it.

Haven't been to Costa Rica in thirty years but if you go I would suggest Cahuita on the Carribean side. 25 miles of National park with coral reefs, palm trees on the beach and howler monkeys raging in the forest right behind the palms.

Why you gotta go there, ChickenScratch? No worries.
After the week in Mexico, I am wide open for a week. I guess since I will already be in the region I was looking at Central, and maybe South America. Costa Rica was suggested because of my penchant for white powder, blue water and brown women.

Costa Rica is beautiful! I went a few years ago with some family and it was great. Torrential downpour for a few days straight, but that didnt stop us from having a good time. We road tripped through most of it, staying in a series of hostels. Trekked through the rain forest, was absolutely awesome. The food is great, but it gets old considering they eat rice and beans with every meal. I highly recommend visiting, although it isnt a place where I can see myself living.

Some pics of my hike to Rancheria falls near Huntington Lake, CA.

This is actually taken from a car on the way to our destination. Its Shaver lake and the dam is being renovated this season so its lower than ive ever seen it.

Anywhere specific should check out? I am trying to avoid the tourist meccas and see the seedy underbelly a little bit. Clean living here requires a little grease once in a while, know what i mean?
