The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

I watched the trailer and got even more excited about ROTK... I literally can't wait for this to come out... stupid December get here sooner...

In regards to the return to the shire, I think that they will have to have some part of it in just because of the scene in Fellowship in LothLorien with Galadriel and the pool where it showed Hobbiton burning, but I do think that it won't be majorly long because you could tell that part of the story fairly quickly. If it is skipped over entirely it would be very disappointing.

CB :)

I got teary eyed with excitement while watching the preview on the Two Towers DVD. Peter Jackson and all the cast kept saying they saved the best for last. I can't wait!

After the disapointment that was the two towers I'll be fucked if I'm going to waste my time reserving a ticket to the opening day again this year.

Some words of advice: If you want to enjoy the movie don't read the book. Better yet read the book, see the movie, laugh at the movie, then read the book again.

I agree that the movies are laughable compared to the books.

BUT, its the best on-screen interpretation to come along sicne...well, ever. I try to enjoy it for what its worth.

You're right about how reading the books corresponds to enjoying the movie though. I didn't read the first book, and saw the movie, thought the movie was insane, loved it, thought it was a masterpiece, blah blah blah. So I decided to read the trilogy. I read the second book BEFORE I saw Two Towers

...and it made Two Towers suck alot.

I love the lord of the rings I so can't wait for Return of the King.

Though I think the Matrix trilogy is a little more solid and Revolutions will definately be the more awaited flick out of the two, but thats my opinion.

They both rock!

This from Newseeek's review of ROTK -
The Scouring of the Shire: One of the final sequences of the book, where the hobbits come home, find their hometown has gone to pot, kick some butts and restore order. Jackson never liked this section of the book, and never even shot it, so don't look for it on the DVD.

why were you disappointed?

The Scouring of the Shire was never shot at all? Interesting - I thought they might have shot it especially when you see the Shire burning in Galadriel's visions in the Fellowship of the Ring. I'm not disappointed at its exclusion and I can understand why it would be cut from the theatrical version at least (in terms of movie pacing, it would be an anti-climax). I wouldn't have minded it at being in the extended version of the film though. Expect a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth on Tolkien forums with 'purists' up in arms!

Two Towers wasn't as good as Fellowship - then again, that's the same as the books. Two Towers was by far my least favourite of the three books.

I don't view the books as some holy grail like many others do though. It was definitely a genre defining series with brilliant ideas, brilliant setting and it had a mythical resonance. However Tolkien's writing style is monotonous. He's a history/linguistics professor and it shows. I also have some other minor issues with characterisation and the like but they're still good fantasy novels and definitely defined the genre.

I have almost no quibbles with the movie interpretation. Some of the 'changes' in the Two Towers puzzled me (Elves in Helm Deep, the added battle in Osgiliath) but I can live with them. Fellowship was a brilliant adaptation.

*waits patiently for Boxing Day*

I just don't get it...

Why does everybody nitpick about what was in the book?

You cannot possibly make the Lord of the Rings movies in such a way that they completely represent the book.

So when you go to the theatre, go expecting to see "Lord of the Rings: The Movies as Interpreted by Peter Jackson, Made for Viewing and not for Reading".

I totally understand why the scouring was left out of the film.

Where to start?!?...

As we all know, what Peter Jackson has done thus far with the Lord of The Rings story is nothing short of genius, as he has managed to captured the hearts and minds of virtually all of us. Unlike other film series recently in theaters (cough...starwars...cough), this trilogy has so far truly lived up to, and surpassed all of it's hype.

The Return of the King will hit theaters on December 17th. Will it prove to be the greatest of the three? Will it prove to be the greatest film of all time? Let's here your thoughts!

Oh, I have also recently heard that Peter Jackson is in talks to produce a film version of "The Hobbit"... so there just might be something ELSE to look forward to after "Return of The King"!

Anticipation is right. I'm very anxious to see the third of the series. There is no doubt in my mind that it will be just as good as the previous two if not better, My guess is better.

My plan the day of release is as follows:

1. Watch "The Fellowship of the Ring".
2. Eat dinner.
3. Watch "The Two Towers".
4. Get to the movie theater 30-45 minutes before scheduled start time.
5. Smoke a lil green for the occasion.
6. Get some popcorn.
7. Get a good seat (Preferably dead center of the theater)
8. Sit back, Relax and enjoy.

i plan to do something quite similar. Please tell me you have the extended DVD releases of the first two films! Honestly, I am not usually a fan of most 'directors cuts' but this is like getting an extra half a movie per film, the extended scenes are that good!

I predict this to be a classic. It's the best book IMHO. After the Extended version of TTT (which blew me away - what an improvement over the theatrical cut!!!!!) I'm anticipating brilliance. I don't think I'll be disappointed.

I'm glad I'm not alone with my goal of 11 hours of tolkien in one day, a few of my friends are with me all the way while others think I'm crazy for what I want to do, I honestly can't wait, everytime I see the preview in a theater I swear I get wood, the part that gets me the most is when gandalf is riding out and the white light shoots from his staff and the music hits perfect with it, I don't know why but it just gets my blood going, and I honestly can't wait to see what Shelob is gonna look like, if its anything like I have always pictured, this grossly spider creature

Agree. Won't even be in the extended version either...wasn't even shot.

BUT, I can also agree that it wouldn't follow the "movie pace" that the trilogy is going at, even though it compliments the amazing ending in the books.

I know it sucks that its not in the film, but I don't think it'll keep me from enjoying the movie TOO too much. ;)
