Vibesquad + PrettyLights 11/15/10

Vibesquad (9/10) played an amazing set, Hadn't heard much of him before the show and instantly fell in love with it. Absolutely amazing, played some beats he'd been only been working on for about a week and mixed it up with all kinds of fast paced, super dancey shit. The bass was unreal, (side note: a good friend of mine works security at the venue and told me they had to rotate positions every 30 minutes or so cause they couldn't take being that close to the speaker stacks.) He played a solid set, had the whole crowd super pumped and completly ready to dance to no end.

This is hands down one of the best live performances I've ever had the privilege of seeing. . They played a super small 2 story sold out venue that was packed. There was no where you could go to get away from all the people.

The moment they walked out on stage the crowd went nuts. It was nonstop energy the whole time. They came on stage right around 11pm and played until 2. The Lights show was amazing, there are moments that reminded me of Ipod-like visuals to getting bombarded with full color stobes and lasers. If you've never seen them live there is a part towards the end of the set where they show live video feed from the back of the crowd over the the screens on stage. It's really cool to see the whole crowd moving and dancing from the sound techs point of view.

Anyway, I'll quit rambling. I have a bit of a soft spot for Pretty Lights. They are responsible for me getting into electronic music in the first place.

Second the notion that EOTO is one of the best live shows out there. Nonstop improvised crunchy ass beats. Small bar since it was on Thanksgiving, but they packed the house and everyone was into it. Third time seein em and they killed it

EOTO must be a "you have to be there" type of act. Everyone who has seen them LOVES them but every video I've seen, even in HD, sounds like dogshit.
 
eoto brings the vibes! lets say out of everyone at a festival i saw... EOTO blew me away... the best by far.. just tripnotic music.. too much rage.

Review: I've seen them twice now the first time was when they closed the festival at Rothbury 2009. They fuckin' killed it too, all around great performance, everytime me and my friend were gonna leave the show to rest (4 days of dancing takes a toll!) they threw out another killer track and we ended up raging out hard throughout the whole show. Def one of the best live performances, mostly because of the shock factor. Nobody I knew had ever heard of them so it was kinda like whoa where the hell did this come from?

Then I saw them for the Bassnectar after party in Atlanta and they fuckin pulled out all the stops again. Somehow they surpassed their Rothbury performance on this one which made me glad. They drove the whole crowd completely wild, mixing and teasing with some great dubstep clips here and there put in the perfect places. I had a friend who was completely sober at the show who's a veteran EDM showgoer and he said that it was the best show he's seen in a very long time. Like me, he had never heard of them, but now I catch him listening to them all the time.
 
Best Live show?

After taking a break from going to live shows I'm going to one in April and its between these 3.

I haven't seen any of these acts live so I'm just looking for opinions on how good/consistent their live performances are?

I've only seen IM out of the list above. I've seen them once in 2004, and another time in 2008. The show in 2004 was very cool, just good, high quality psytrance. The show in 2008 reminded me more of mainstream rock concert.

I am not really into Wolfgang Gartner, but from what I understand he plays commercial electro house?

What exactly do you want from the show? Do you want to rock out? Do you wana hit on some ladies? Do MDMA or maybe some psychedelics? If you're going with a chick, I'd imagine electro house would be better than metal/psytrance.

Review: I've seen Bassnectar about 10 times total now. In the last year ive seen him 4 times. this show in total, and especially Bassnectar was the best show ive been to in years, ive not the best show ive been to. From 7 pm-1 am the best audio, quality and visual quality was displayed I have EVER seen. Also the props and stage dancers, etc was so out of control and so overwhelming if I was personally tripping I woulda been freaking out. I was 1 out of 47 people chosen to work for Bassnectar personally.. His tour manager introduced us two two young, very attractive women that would be giving us instructions for what we had to do to PREP for the show and then what we would actually be doing very specifically for the whole night. Everything had a serious vibe but during breaks everythign was TOTALLY chill and when the crew impressed them with the first 2 hours we worked once the crowd was let in, both of the people in charge relaxed and was giving us hig hfives and handing us ice cold water and giving us 5-30 mintue breaks depending on how long we had worked, and how much effort we really put into it. we were required to work in 2 crews and do 3 shifts in each for AT LEAST 30 minutes each shift. I worked an hour and did four shifts but was allowed in the very front for a total of 90 minutes and then allowed in the VIP "bass cage" 35 feet or so from the stage with chairs inside so we could stand and directly see lorin play. It wa awesome I took a regular camera and took many photos, hopefulyl the came out good. I have some that others took and video links. It was a really special night and I will NEVER forget it!

Filastine 8.5/10
The first time I saw filastine was almost a year ago. I was not very impressed the first time, but I was SERIOUSLY shocked to see the boost in energy and change of style as far as tracklisting. The mixes were on point I heard some well known songs and some new material, all but a few tracks which I didnt throughly enjoy. I was working the Rage Crew handing out suckers and water about 30 minutes into the show, before that I was in the "Octopus Crew" and brought out a large Octopus someone made and we pared it outside the venue before the HUGE crowd that waited since 1 pm came in.

Ana Sia (can not rate because I only heard/saw 20% of her set because I was taking a break and ate lunch with Paul, the videographer for Bassnectar. He was an awesome guy and I gave an interview about "bass culture" "bass heads" and what it means to me personally to be an amBASSador an family now.

Glitch Mob 7.5/10
Ok OK. I was imrpessed by the beginning of Glitch Mobs set. They came out HARD with some new tracks I had never heard, some were a little older but they were new to me, I asked a few people and they said only a few songs were not new. Anyways, they had good energy and had tight tracklisting for the first 40 mintues, really impressing me for the first 20, but the last 20 minutes was boring and they started mixing songs VERY slowly letting tracks play out for 6 mins and loops go for almost a whole minute... it was like.. what happened? If they had stayed on point the whole performance, I would have given them a 9.

Bassnectar 10/10
OK when he came out the crowd went NUTS, before he grabbed the mic or played a song they were about to collapse the Asheville Civic Center... The floor was SUPER packer I heard 8600 but I think it was a little less, regardless it was PACKED and the upper arena was too. He gave a great speech, thanked US for helping out, and said he had prepared a very special set for us that evening. He played for just under 3 hours and it was amazing to say the least. TRACKS I REMEMBER for sure and this is in the best order I can remember

And a lot more I cant remember. There was about 4 HARD dubstep tracks that all sounded new to me, not sure if any were produced by lorin but 2 of them had a bit of his sound to it! They were all spectacular! The energy in the crowd was insane the whole night, we launched 6 people about 2 times each and they crowdsurfed fairly far each time.

Heard is the crew watching sound/light check for Bassnectar, we got to dance in the back it was a blast. Im on the far right up front. Hat on backwards, before lorin signed it and they custom spray painted my hat (pics to come if people really want of the final hat)

The rage crew right before we went out to start our shift after the Octopus. I had my mustache painted on already, as well as custom spray paint or body paint from artist lorin hired. The had cool custom hats, I shoulda bought one. But I got 2 custom bassnectar shirts that have the dead head but Bassnectars logo inside the head.

here is the family photo with Lorin. he talked to us for about 10 minutes bout how we were representing him, and if we did a good job, we would be asked back at future bass centers as well as shows local, or we are willing to travel to. I am on the right of the guy in second row far righhht the other picture has me gotta dig it up!

Family photo at the very end. You can see the bass cage.. the kids standing up in all white a little higher than everyone else on the left about 40 feet back. :D I was on the side of the stage waiting to get pictures/autograph with lorin. There was so many people he had to address that my time was limited. but I scored what i really wanted, I also wanted to get autographs for friends as well but with the amount of people and the amount of his time I didnt ask.. I did however get a few great pics of him before the show and during so I will be sending doubles to them!

damn man, it seems like bassnectar is starting to achieve a godlike status. This is the first time I have ever heard of getting autographs from a electronic producer.
 
Recently saw Skrillex, Porter Robinson, DJ Aero & Tommy Lee and SOFI!! Putting up review of it all in a few hours or tomorrow. SOFI fucking SLAYED. (And skrilly was 5 times worse than his last show I went to)

I don't think I've ever even heard him.

WOW. Haven't heard a SINGLE bassnectar track? The guys been at this for over 10 years... he just recently got to where he is at now... he goes SO far to please his fans and keep people safe. The only people that didnt appreciate what the amBASSadors (the job I did) where drunks, and after going around giving out water, fruit, and suckers I slowly saw the crowd mimic the behavior and start sharing cigs, and water, and even a few of the drunks got into it.

All I know is... the lights/sound for bassnectar alone cost more than a lot of shows that size for EVERY artist.... bassnectar had custom sound/light setup and had more stage props than anyone ive ever seen. Getting to see all those beach balls, and alligators launched was an amazing sight to say the least...

I agree not many djs/producers get asked for autographs.. in the 14 years ive been doing this ive seen it only 3-5 times.

Once was for richard humpty vission in 2001 after a REALLY spectacular house set. I mean it was on POINT. Plus his new cd had dropped 2 weeks prior.. so a lot of people we're buying it AFTER the set and getting it signed. I have met bassnectar (although briefly) many times and wanted my hat signed cause it was custom and I had bassnectars artists paint his logo on the right... To even out the hat and have memories for ever I had him sign it on the left, wore it to an event this week, now its in retirement. He always jumps off stage and greets his fans, I just noticed more and more people want autographs. I mainly just wanted to snag a few pictures with him (like I try to do at all shows) He is a hippie type of guy I dont know why autographs has anything to do with that. And junglejuice, biased against his audience? That was like a backhanded slap to the face of everyone who has posted a review in here for him... dont you think? As far as other djs/producers an autographs. The whole planet of the drums crew in 02' and 03' got HOUNDED for autographs, thats when it was doing REALLY good and the music was perfect, couldn't ask for more back then.

I got 2 more reviews to add... I will use this post and edit out everything I wrote just now and replace it with fresh reviews from a new show I just went to... Just wanted you to to read my response.
 
Well obviously I'm generalizing, but he does tend to bring out a crowd of wookie raver converts.
