ChronicPain stated:

we where talking about "alkaloinds of opium" which are mostly narcotic.. the ones that are not usually result in death.. there toxic.. highly

They are not toxic, but sure, like anything, can kill in high doses. They pose no real neurotoxicity, and is not toxic to the organs. They are only toxic in the sense that they can kill, otherwise they are quite non-toxic. There is even evidence that opiates, those derived from opium as you said (pantherene class, which are those whose structure resemble morphine/codeine, and includes semi-synthetic thebaine derivatives such as the codones, morphones, heroin), have possible neuro-protective properties. Even complete piperidine synthetics, like fentanyl, are toxic in the sense that a small dose can kill you due to its high potentcy, but it is otherwise non-toxic to the internal organs and lacks any real neurotoxicity (aside from drugs like demerol, and poorly synthesized drugs like
MPTP--->MPPP) . Some drugs of the heptanone class, like methadone and its derivatives, show evidence of possible neurotoxicity, especially propoxyphene napsylate, but still, are pretty non-toxic in general. So your statement is largely incorrect. A doctor once told me, "methadone is less toxic than childrens asprin".

Also, about fentanyl not being a drug that should be played with, i disagree. Fentanyl's potency is exaggerated greatly (especially by those who have never tried it, kalt have you personally tried it?), and it doesnt take a "pea sized" lump of gel to kill you, this amount wont even get you high regardless of tolerance. I experiment, also known as "playing", with fentanyl in many ways, i inject super high doses (20mg+, yes 20 milligrams intravenously). I can do this because of my huge 180mg methadone tolerance. I have smoked, eaten, worn, taken subligually, injected, snorted, and plugged fentanyl gel, as i have had the priviledge to fool around with MANY fentanyl patches. In fact, im getting pretty bored with it.........

ChronicPAIN: well done, admitting one has been wrong is not easy to do. How was it explained to you so that you finally understood, if you don't mind my asking?

negrogesic: yes I've had it before. I realize there comes a point where one's tolerance allows for more leeway in experimenting with fentanyl, but it's always going to have a narrow therapeutic ratio no matter how high your tolerance is, and when sucking gel out of a patch it's hard to measure how much you're taking. The stuff is so strong and short acting that I have never heard of anyone getting a great nod off of it. It's risk to reward ratio is too high, let's put it that way. As you said, you're getting bored with the stuff. I've never heard of anyone getting bored with, say, oxycodone.
