the guitar players megathread

Like I said, I like the way it feels and it isn't that bad all things considered. maybe the sweatshop workers who assembled it were having a good day becuase I tried out another entry level squire at the shop and it sounded like complete ass and felt like it was made of plastic. I did some googling and it seems entry level guitars are popular for upgrading. Maybe just changing the bridge since it won't cost more than the guitar is worth and that's the one I use the most anyways?

Well if you say you like the feels of it you can always keep i in your arsenal upgrade the mics and later on in life buy-sell-buy more guitars amps pedals etc, you can even make a living if you have a good customer base and know where to find rare shit for not so much, that said aside.

There are plenty of strat type guitars in the low price range, the Yamaha ones used to be very good for example, as for changing the mics well if it´s a begginers guitar I wouldn´t change all mics without changing ALL the wiring of the guitar, with that said I´´d change the bridge, IMO is the most important mic of the guitar, with that said a lace sensor color depending on the output-input you desire, what style you play, if you want if for fat soundijg chords or sensitive picking etc.....also you could check out mics like the supra distortion (I think it is the Di Marzio Supra Distortion, but don´t remember) and add a humbucker on the bridge, like an american fat strat, which are great guitars, I think there´s a model that´s a humbucker in a single coil slot, otherwise you could always check out the line do some work on the pots an change the pickguard to have a doble-coil on the bridge, but you seem like you want to try lace sensors, and hey they are awesome! but I´d change the whole set for 3 lace sensors....on the other hand if it´s your only electric guitar spending all that money....you could upgrade, but hey you know your budget, and if you feel comfortable playing it and like it just keep it and maybe change the bridge first and then the others.

also you can always re-sell or keep the lace sensors if you get another geetar. i´d say go on and modify it! but know your budget and be aware of all the possibilities you have

So Im gonna go ahead and drop anywheres from 600-900 clams on a new ax sometime soon, and I wanted to look into something that had a tremolo on it. I listen to alotta sickly abusive wang-bar solos and I wanna get on that kinda magic, so I'd be goin for the whole double-action double locking full-on floyd rose kinda deal. Any thoughts? Does having the floating trem affect the way the strings bend? I do alot of bending, sometimes up 2 whole steps and such. Discuss.

PS: What the hell is the difference between 'floyd rose' and 'floyd rose liscensed'?

yo, I have the real deal I think it was Octobeer 1965 that my stang was made :) al original pre-cbs fender....the bridge is awesome, I tok the tremolo off since I don't use it but I could made some whacky stufff with that tremolo. The jap reissues fo for around 500 bucks and are good, but if you are hell bent on a locking floyd rose check out what Jackson has to offer on it's medium range guitars. You can alwats get a strat for versatilty and also have a Floyd Rpse, oif you go for a Made in Mexico or Tex-M<ex strat you can get real good shit like a fat strat with a locking tremolo for around 800bucks, Gretsch has also came iwith a lower price range line that's good and some had bigsby tremolos which are the best tremolos imo, check out for yourself. If you can shell out 200-300 more bucks more you can get a new american fender stratocaster (I'd go with the 57 reissue which goes for 1k-1.5k or an american fat strat which goes for around the same maybe osme more, depending on mics and of coursw depending where you buy) and with that money you can add the bridge/tremolo/tuners/locking systems you want, you want. With a strat you can't go wrong, if there's an american Mustang Reissie I'd look into it, and if you can get an older one I'd tpotallyu reccokend it, though it seems it's nopt the sound you're lookinmg for you'd be qmazed playing an original early 60s stang on a good warmth valvular amp......

Whatever you do, make sure the guitar you get has a LOCKING tremelo. You do not want a non-locking tremelo. they are weak beyond comprehension. bending won't have any effect if it is a locking one...if it isn't you'd better be prepared to be tuning and re-tuning alot...don't even get me started on going into different tunings...:p i had to buy and install this nifty peice of hardware called a 'tremel-no' on my crappy guitar to stop mmyself from smashing it.

floyd rose licensed means it follows the same design created by floyd rose, but isn't actually made by floyd rose.

The guy who I take to restring my guitar lowered the bridge so it's flat on the body and my guitar stays in tune alot longer now.

been playing for 4 years. at first i didn't really take it seriously, just something to do when i'm bored. bought myself a 300 dollar epiphone special edition gibson as my first guitar, it treated me well for awhile but you get what you pay for, it started sounding really crummy. after a couple years playing that one, i became a lot more serious about music so i invested in a 666$ (lol) Parker PM20. it's my current guitar and probably my favorite thing in my life right now. now i'm in a band and we're in the process of getting our shit together and practicing our material (which we have a LOT of), after that we are going to record an EP; my drummers dad owns a recording studio with his band.

as for amplifiers and pedals i don't have a lot, not working a job right now but when i do that's all i'll invest in (besides drugs). I had a cube amp, don't recall if that's even the right name for it, but it was a decent amp for self-jams. I bought a 200 dollar 15 volt Vox Valvetronix which has a great sound, I took a chance buying this amp because I wasn't sure how great the sound quality would be. i forget the term for this type of amp but it's got about a dozen different sounding amp selections and another dozen built in effects that aren't very customizable but they work (basic delay, flanger, chorus, wah, etc)

so yeah, that's my set up right now. just finished learning Bastille Day by Rush earlier this morning. i'm also extremely eager to buy an acoustic or a classical, whichever, i just love the sound they produce. but first i have to get this amazing looper that my cousin has, i don't remember the name of it but you can loop up to 4 tracks, change the tempo, reverse and play over your looped tracks.
it's fucking awesome.

fender strat, hotrod deville tube amp, vox wah, boos ds/2 super distortion and my trusty old digitech rp6, i love that thing. there is this one wah wah preset that sounds nuts. super wide sweep range. goes from buzz to deep WAHHHHWAW

You have nice taste in guitars as you do in drugs med cabinet :P I´ve been playing for 12,a slo first instrument i pìcked, well i took piano lessons from 6 to 8, but it wasn´t something I had picked.

As for my stang I won´say exactly how much I payed for it but it was a very good price it even came with its original casing, and I end up paying less than what they asked for since I also bought an old (the real small red ones) Digitech Whammy for $500 and a Tubescreamer I ended up paying less than 3k but more than 2.5k. Didin´t mind and don´t mind, I was working a very high paying job in Iceland at the time and was off drugs (well except rx´s and when i went out of iceland) so I bought loads of guitar stuff thanks to my work in Iceland. some which I sold in Argentina and Sweden and ended up making money and pedals, about the locking tremolo I used to play at my friend´s andy studio a cool Ibanezz gem I bought off him and sold it back to him in a month and I hated te locking tuners and locing tremolo, but it wasn´t for my style.

Anyway I have a good ammount of boss pedals too a DS-1, A PS-3 with Expression Pedal, A DD-6, and some more taht don´t come to mind, I have many mXr´s, a Dunlop Jimmy Hendrix wah, a Morley Bad Horsie Wah, I Also Have 2 new Digitech Whammys I ran thru midi, one is a Whammy one is a Whammy-Wah, and I have loads of shit form my fav maker of pedals, that si elctro-harmonix. Well gotta flñy post more later.

I love your setup Med Cab, I could totally do with that hotrod deville, and I love the ds-1 90s distortion type of sound with a good dose of big muff, as for the Vox Wah it looks great, but never tried it myself and with the jim dunlop jimmy hendrix and morley bad horsie, none of which I desire to sell I´m done with wahs. the Whammy Wah I´m willing to sell.

Oh MC: which type of strat do you have? dig your setup, I dunnno the digitech you have, I guess it´s a multi effect thingie, many are ok, but I´m a pedal whore.

i was just lookin at this thread while playin some pentatonic runs when just now, someone opens the door, walks in, tells me something (that i dont need to hear), and walks away leaving the door open. always have i hated this shit ever since i started playing. presently i shall respond by turnin up the volume very loud for all to hear clearly, since people consistently demonstrate they want my repetitive exercises and noodling to fill the hallway.

Yeah....I´ve been kicked out of 2 apartments due to me playing at 4am, fuck them put the sustain on your fuzz pedal to the op and add distortion and proced fucking them, aznd finding a ¨friendlier¨place to play, I used to go to rehearsal studios a lot with my bands, but now that it´s just me on guitars and voice and my computers doing some shit, and I´m no longer a junkie I´m building a professional soundproof studio at a small spot with a lovely view in an avenue downtown where i can play till my fingers bleed xmoke crack rocks and keep rocking till 10am, gotta throw some more g´s I don´t have at the moment now though to have it just like I want, so I´m looking forward...if it makes you feel better I was messing around trying and improvised version of ¨Pork and Beans¨by weezer an hour ago and the volume and my siging caused my girl to leave the house cause she couldn´t read...whatever, Guitars before Hos...

No, it's not that staercaster, it's the rebranded squire one you buy at target on the cheap. they're great for beginners, but now that I've gotten better I'm being held back by the weak pickups. I was thinking of putting a blue lace sensor in the neck, a gold in the middle and a red in the bridge so I can play chunky bass heavy les paul type stuff, keep the strat tone I love but one that distorts better in the middle, and make my guitar go really high gain brain melting solos in the bridge.

But since it's a cheap guitar I don't know if it would make much of a difference. I tried out an ephiphone sg at my music shop that goes for $250 and I liked it, but I still want my strat single coil twang and I love the way mine plays. so yeah, to your knowledge would it make a difference since a set of lace sensors is cheaper.

I've played a couple strat's and to each his own because I did not enjoy them in the least. Many of them had plastic parts with weak tuners and the single coils had that great twang to it, but not suitable for my tastes of music. But I agree, ... it's great for beginners, though if my son or daughter wanted their first guitar I'd lean towards the below $200 Ibanez's or Epiphones.

I just picked up a new electric guitar two days ago which I'm still really excited about. An epiphone LP-100; nothing spectacular, but given that I'm picking up playing after years I think it's a really neat-o guitar.

Especially since it's mahogany. I make love to it.

It's on a line 6 Spider III amp:

Good effects but it's sometimes really difficult to get a good clean, crisp tone. I'm looking for something half-way decent towards something like a tube amp for quality acoustics but this things is failing me on that department. Otherwise, for metal, this thing is spectacular.

Any one know what's the cheapest you can get a small quality tube amp? I'm poor. Give me money.

i would suggest, rather than getting your heart set on a tube amp, go to a guitar store with your guitar and just try a bunch of amps and pedals and see i fyou can find a tone you like.

if you get really stuck, i have a fender princeton 65 and an ibanez tube screamer i'll sell you :)

alasdair

I looked through the thread fairly well, but saw no mention of Paul Reed Smith. Anyone have one? It's my dream to own a PRS. I live in Maryland a few miles from where they make them and actually thinking about getting a job there.

Oh, and I posted my pics in the "Show your gear" thread from earlier

As for amps, I'm a big vintage Fender devotee. For cheap AND tube, look around for Music Man amps. They are vitually identical to Fenders but without the extra cost of have the name Fender written on the front.

Good advice, Music Man, also like their most famous guitar. don't remembere the name. Gibson makes valvular amps as low as 5watts (though for playing in a room it's more than enough), old fender bronco amps can be found from $400 to $1000, I'd reccomend a Fender Blues Jr which is 15watts or 30, don't remember, or the model that's more basic they are made in mexico and go for around $400, though the older models are made in USA and have a great clean tone you can change with your pedals, guitars, settings etc. I bought an used americsn one for $250, and I love it, oh the knoba go to 12 so that's cool too, if you mic the amp it's even good to play live, and ypou can change the tubes for different sounds.

Check out e-bay. Oh I played a Paul Reed Smith, great neck and mics but there was something about the body and how it affected the sound didn't like, I used it at my friend's andy studio, it was the real deal. I'd invest on a gibson or a hägstrom or an old telecaser instead.
