the genetic influence of drugs

@spok

Although you made some good points, you sullied your argument by speaking so rudely and outlandishly to another user while having an intelligent and interesting discussion. While the previous conversation was heated, you have portrayed your point in a very condescending and patronizing way. You are obviously a clever person but please in future think more carefully about how you present yourself.

my advice to you would be forget about being an atheist

I'm not even going to touch this one.

Chemi: A Theory is an educated guess more or less. Because no matter how you put it - the law of gravity is correct, what goes up - must come down. However the theory to why this is correct - is just a guess. No one really knows for sure, although we believe we do. What if tomorrow, a new scientist were to say the atmosphere is actually a reverse polarized magnetic field that forced everything, regardless of mass, in some way - toward the ground?

It works as an explanation also. Once substanciated a little, by a few of my toadies - it'd be a scientific theory also. More than one theory makes up a conclusion ;)

All we can do is believe the "truest" theory. We can sail through life saying "you can't prove it FOR SURE" forever, but I'm going to believe whatever has the most evidence backing it. Currently, the theory of evolution is the most complete explanation, in my eyes.

The conclusion you speak of is still not guaranteed to be the final conclusion. That's why they're called theories. They change as new evidence comes to light. If one cannot accept a theory as very very valuable information, that is, a collection of facts to formulate a theory, what can one ever believe?

morons? speak for yourself.

chemi: i think we agree. I was just pointing out, that theory doesn't mean truth. It is an educated guess. a possible explanation substanciated by facts that form a reason for the theory itself. Variables can prove theories wrong - and have in the past.

Oh I see - yes, I agree. Theory does not equal truth. More like, suspected truth ;)

And as to the theories, there was a theory that the world was flat once. And more people believed this than do of the theory of evolution.

Correct. But more evidence came to light, so they changed the theory, now the theory is that the world is ROUND! :) Theories are great things aren't they :D

^ well i guess that theory is proven as fact is it not? given we've apparantly sent people into space, of which im guessing probably saw the orb shaped earth in all its glory?

in saying this, i'm kind of sarcastic because certain 'theories' exist that say otherwise... and i'm not exactly the most trusting person of the US government.

^ yes that's a good point, I don't know where the line between fact and theory is. Perhaps when one can argue that the theory cannot be argued against, there is evidence to eliminate all reasonable doubt, then it becomes a fact. But that's still a judgement call.

I wonder if PD would know

what a gag.

I think people need to really put some effort in to how they communicate their arguments, if they want them to be taken with anything more than a grain of salt.

le sigh

Spok you raise some interesting points but unfortunately you lose credibility in your argument when you spend nearly half your post insulting someone because their opinion is different to yours.

I am pretty torn in the issue, I believe in evolution but I am not educated on it whatsoever. Several people have put across some good, convincing arguments in this thread but really when it turns into throwing insults around you do nothing but take away from the discussion.

This thread has gone way off topic anyway and really belongs in a forum other than AusDD, the current argument has no relevance to this forum whatsoever.
