Uh... digital globe... they spend a LOT of money on analytical res techniques- I know, I interviewed with them...
I believe I mispoke, once you're at the physical limit of optics (quantum limit) sure you're not going to get better. But, you can use interpolative techniques to better your standard image. Way off topic here, sorry.
Just some interesting stuff- check out digitalglobe. Pretty interesting for commercial satellites.

This really isn't a technological war for these crops. The technological war is being fought for the synthetics like meth and MDMA as the production
methods are one jump ahead of chemicals which are impossible to get (or just get these diverted from legit sources).
Heroin and cocaine aren't like marijuanna growth in the states. Marijuana in the states is simply hidden, either by indoor growing or for large scale operations planting amoungst rows of legal crops or hiding in the forest. All of these methods make air based identification difficult. Besides consider the enormass cost to do that kind of survelance on the entier US (even automatic satelite pics still need to be analyzed and half the reports are probably going to be false).
Heroin and cocaine, by contrast, are grown more openly, just in rebel or unfriendly country territory. We might know where some coca fields are in columbia but because the FARC will defend its territory and our at least partial aversion to exacerbating the violence protects these fields.
Heroin (opium) is grown in similar situations (afganistan or whatever). Quite simply they are grown in areas where the local government is nearly powerless or corrupt (or don't mind drug manufacture...a la mendicino county). To make the matters even tougher for law enforcement in some parts of the world their are massive poppy fields to produce morphine for medical use. I can't imagine a fair bit of this doesn't get diverted (you can't know beforehand how much opium is in the poppy. It should be trivial for the low paid workers to pocket a reasonable amount every day). This isn't to mention the fact that at least a few of these plantations are probably selling a percentage on the side to the black market.

Legit opium producers (for medicine and whatnot) are generally not located in hostile illicit drug areas, such as Columbia of Afganastan.. if I recall an article I read, opium can only be legally imported from specific countries and it's highly regulated .. regardless, the US can tell a country "hey, we found an illegal coca/opium field over in your country" - that country can ask for assistance frm the US, or they can take care of it on their own, however, if the cartels are paying off everyone (as they are) not much might get done...

Can anyone supply a link to an article outlining why the war on drugs will fail, and why it would never work or something like that?
I am in a debate with several people from my school right now.. making such claims that weed kills brain cells and acid makes you crazy forever.. and heroin is 1st time addiction..
Anything covering topics such as those would be great..
sorry to get off topic

A great deal of legal opium comes from india. Now they are not columbia I doubt they have a very effective enforcement system.
Also i believe if you start playing with phases of the light and shit you might be able to a do a little better (kind of like a reverse lithography problem but differnt)

Shite!
What the fcuks this world comming to when the government can zoom in with a satalite+spy on u?
Crazy, what an infringement of human rights (I think)
If the USA seriously wanted to stop all drug problems+eliminate all coke+heroin, they could have done it a long time ago!
With the amount spent on drug enforcement each year, you could buy up the worlds opium+coke crops 5x over,+pay a good price 4 it,+from there on the government could just buy at a better rate than the drug cartels! +problem solved.
Do u really believe that they want to solve this ongoing problem???
Course they don't,It's all about money$$$$££££,and if the illegal world of drugs falls down,so will there fatcat profits.
Yeah, alot of people in the government are serious about solving the problem+want to help but the ultimate say is with the people at the top who are obviously benefiting from drug sales,
If there where no drugs, think of all the jobs that would be lost around the world?
They just couldn't do it+think of all those people running about trying to score going mad!!!
They'd rather have us sat at home out of it watching brainwashing TV!!!believe me!
Drugs are the governments way of surpressing those who don't conform+who dare to challenge!!
How about that???
Smells like conspiracy!!!!

Heres those figures I promised;
"The worlds supply of heroin could be grown in less than FIFTY sqaure miles of field. The total worldwide area of land under coca cultivation is currently estimated at less than 1000 sqaure miles while something in the region of 2.5 million square miles in South America alone is climatically suitable for it"
Out of It, a cultural history of intoxication, Stuart Walton.
