First off I want to say before I post this that im not into either one of these drugs, hallucinogens are my thing...anyway....the US government is in the process of testing new satalites that will be able to detect drug crops such as the opium poppy or coca plant as well as marijuana....they are planning on using a two pronged attack...first detection of large drug crops followed by intense eradication efforts such as areal spraying.....now who cares if they nail outdoor marijuana crops because most people cultivate it indoors these days...BUT you cant cultivate huge amounts of opium poppys or coca plants indoors....does this mean that we are on the verge of seeing the complete eradication of the raw materials needed to produce herion and cocaine????? Any thoughts would be appreciated and please no flames.....
 
Drug producers have always been one step ahead of the governments that try to destroy them. It has always been like that, and always will be. I don't think we have anything to worry about except price increases and short-lived dryness.
 
I've seen a book all about hydroponic opium, heh. There's always the synthetic route, but that isn't quite the same.
 
As long as there are human beings around they are going to want to get high. As long as they want to get high there are going to be people out there who will find a way to make mucho mula off drugs. So they WILL find a way to grow the needed materials.
Anyways, don't we already have satalites that are capable of finding drug crops?
I'm pretty sure we do.
Also I don't think we need satalites to find drug crops.. we know where all the cocaine factories in south america are.. we know where everything is basiclly.

Heroin and coke will never be stopped. Addiction level and mass enjoyment level is high enough for it to go on forever. You ever hear about prohibition? That shit didn't even last 20 years in America. Ever hear of cigarettes becoming illegal? Shit... coke and heroin are illegal and they're still unstoppable. The profit is too high, and no matter what they think the government's propaganda only works on rich elementary school kids, not some poor bastard working in a coke factory in Colombia. The only kind of drugs that you ever have to worry about are drugs like mescalline and lsd. Non-addictive drugs with a limited group of users. LSD is very hard to synthesize (and find the substances) and peyote is virtually extinct. In short... no worries for coke and heroin... save them for your psychedelics.
Also... you think the government can spot five marijuana plants some kid down the street has growing in the forest? I mean... that won't feed a nation, but it sure as hell will feed a few potheads.

Um.. the US government already has satelites... not to mention spy planes, intelligence officers, informants, etc., for the purpose of locating drug crops.
Hell, we even have soldiers illegally entering Central and South American countries on anti-narco missions.
It's no secret where these crops are located or how these operations are run.
The only thing that may possibly different any time soon is the public increasingly losing interest in paying outrageous amounts of money to fight some war where no progress has been made since it started 20 years ago.

Most good (kind) weed is grown indoors. And synthetic opiods, like fentanyl, would do me just find. Cocaine....well i think thats out of our governments jurisdiction.
 
With coke and H there comes money, alot of money. Some people in this world would do anything for money, so do think that a satalite will stop people from wanting all this money, i don't think so, they will find ways. The war on drugs will be neverending, drugs will be never ending
 
The worlds supply of both coke and heroin could be produced on a surprisingly small area of ground. I cant remember the exact figures now, watch this space.
Even if they could detect all the areas in the world where puff, coca and opium was grown do you know what an impossible task it would be to get to and destroy it all?
The US government has enough to worry about as it is at the moment.
The situation in afganistan could well lead to a growth in opium growth there because the only people who were growing where the northen alliance and now they have a big part in the governement.
That and south american countries have been growing more and more opium in recent years in an effort to take over the US market.
 
People will just find another drug to substitute. People will always get high no matter what. All the U.S. Govt is doing is raising prices to promote crime and such, welcome to America :)
 
The funny thing is that the government has had the power to take out all drug crops for years. Do you think they would REALLY want to do this? Of course not. Do you know how much money tax payers spend on the drug ar to finance the jobs of those enforcing it. Can't remember the figure off-hand but it is billions of dollars.
The fact of the matter is that the US government likes to make money. And erradicating the war on drugs would make them a lot LESS money that it would if drugs were A) Legal; or B) erradicated.
 
I imagine that they are talking about satalites capable of taking images of suspected crops - will they have a satalite that can simply scan and automatically detect poppy or coca fields? No, I don't think so... but it doesn't matter, for years the cartels have been mixing their crops with other, taller plants, or growing them in the jungle under the cover of trees ..
Technology helps the "war on drugs" but you can't eliminate something that earns that much money...
 
The word on the street is that there are satellites that can zoom in on a serial number of a dollar bill in someone's hand ( I watch a lot of late night Discovery Channel ). But even if our country has the capability to wipe out domestic cash crop drugs, there is no way that other countries will stop because of our silly drug laws.
 
Bodymovin -- naa, I don't think you can't get satellites that good. There are some theoretical limits on how good of a resolution you can get -- the best one I can think of is prob based on heat/wind dispersion of the light -- which I think would kick in at a few centimeters if not more. Still, there are certainly satellites out there that can do a meter resolution, prob better.
 
drug traffickers and manufacturers will always be a step ahead. I think the movie "traffic" sumed it up quite well: "the're always one step ahead" Q:"why?" A:"unlimited budget"

The first sum meter "commercial" imaging satellite (.5 meter) was launched last october. Military definitely has better res birds. Once you hit the physical limit- there are still lots of analytical ways to increase res...
But, yes, serial number on a bill is probably right out.

Actually I don't believe they are from what I've read. It's kind of like zooming in on a JPEG file and trying to sharpen things up, it gets a little clearer but it's not very helpful. The physical limits are the problem. This isn't like the movies where they just click the button, say "Enhance" and the blurry bank robbery video goes from 50% static to giving a crystal clear image of whatever was taped.
