The EADD Windows Technical Gibberings Thread

I have a usb port. this card goes in that space that's about 2 1/2 " long and 7 mm wide. the card itself is grey and is about 8 cm long if i remember rightly. has a blue label / sticker. If it can be done by usb i can do that as well.

Yeah do it by USB, as I said above the card you're talking about is called a PCMCIA card or a PC-CARD. They're not just for wifi, you get them for all sorts of uses, but PC-CARD is an old technology and you'll get a USB wifi adapter for £5, like this one:

search ebay or amazon for "802.11n usb mini"

edit: Kind of surprised your laptop has USB but not built in wifi. It must be quite old but not that old.

So someone sent me a document on Adobe and I need to modify it but I can't figure out how...I converted it to a text document but then it would appear I can't convert it back so that's not of much use. Anyone know how I can do it?

No not exactly, sorry - I've got a PDF and I've only managed to import it into a .txt . I want to import it into Word but it's telling me it can't convert it and it just opens a blank page. If I could import it into Word that would be sufficient and I wouldn't need to make it a PDF again but I can't figure out how :\
So basically I need to figure out how to either import it into word, or convert a .txt into a PDF.
(sorry I'm not being very clear)

Just copy the text from the .txt (open it in notepad or whatever, ctrl-a, ctrl-c) and paste it (ctrl-v) into a new Word document.

Or are you trying to keep the original formatting?

Yeah I need the original formatting...
Having it on .txt isn't ideal at all because it erases the format completely but I figured maybe if I could convert back into a PDF it would go back to how it was originally.

No, a text document is simply text, no formatting. It will not keep the original formatting if you go from txt to PDF. It's lost in the conversion to txt.

I really don't think you can import into Word like that. You might (I don't know) get the text and some of the formatting, but it won't preserve it perfectly. You probably need Distiller or something to do that.

What exactly are you trying to do? I mean the broad idea like "fill in a form" or "add a line to a poster".

There are tools for making small changes to PDFs. Jancrow or some other clever designy person will undoubtedly know for sure.

Aah okay.

I just need to add my name and a couple details to a PDF document. It's just a few small changes but I've looked everywhere in the menu and I'm under the impression I can't make any at all...?

if it's a "PDF form" (that's a specific type of PDF, not just a form that's been scanned in and saved as PDF) you can fill them in with Acrobat Reader. But it sounds like it's not. (I see they've dropped the "acrobat" name)

Have a look here http://forums.adobe.com/thread/580963

EDIT: You can load a PDF in GIMP and add text to it, I've actually done that, it works! Don't know if you can do that in Photoshop or something, but GIMP is free, so if you don't have some fancy graphics package then get Gimp and do it there, it's easy.

Ah awesome, I'll download Gimp and try that then, because for some reason what they're suggesting in the forum isn't working. Thanks a lot for the help! :)

NB when you import it into GIMP it converts the PDF to a picture, so you won't be able to edit the existing text, and when you export it back to PDF the original text will not be stored as text in the PDF, you'll just have a picture of the text.

Does that make sense?

In order to retain the editable text throughout this process you need some other tool which I don't know about. What used to be "Distiller" or something. Adobe want you to buy Adobe XI

Here's another option if what I've just said means you can't use GIMP: http://www.pdfescape.com/

Just noticed Inkscape lets you edit and save with editable text, didn't know it could do that! Handy. So this is probably better than GIMP for your needs! Can you hear me???

I CAN HEAR YOU!!!

Oh god this is so complicated! Yeah I don't understand how to make this work in gimp since it's not letting me edit the text (gaaaah) so I'm downloading inkscape now. Who would've thought this would be so complicated. And to think they could have simply sent me a word document :|

This isn't about my computer but I'm not sure where else to ask - does anyone know how to unblock a Blackberry? It's an english one and I'd like to put a french sim card into it but I don't understand anything about the instructions I've found online :|

Yo! I'm going to buy a new processor and motherboard, and eventually some graphics cards too.

I've taken my eye off many balls in the last couple of years and one is the COMPUTER BALL. I'd have been asking ME this question a few years ago. What the fuck do I need to get? A mobo / processor / RAM bundle. But which? I want it to last for a long time but I don't want to spend a ZILLION on it or anything. I've got monitors, I've got discs. I do a lot of 2D graphics shit, y'all.
