The EADD old farts nostalgia thread!

I've always somehow remembered that this was the first ever MP3 I downloaded over the internet:

And was pleased to see that it still retains the date. There can't be many files dated to the 1990's on this network. Hah. :)

I WAS STILL IN MY TWENTIES!!! :D

Wow! Just had a right old trip down memory lane. Been tidying out the attic and found all my old artwork. Here's a sample of my 'O' level work from 1980.

You are exactly the same (school year) age as me.

I met 'Benny' in a pub in Islington in 1994. One of the first things he said was 'Don't you know who I am?'. Yes. Yes I do. And you've just shattered my illusions you cunt. RIP, whatever.

I was 35. Gotta <3 The Orb though.

We're listening to them right now. %)

It feels a bit odd feeling a certain nostalgia over a computer file though. It's just a bunch of 1s and 0s.

Strange times.

not that I'm ever pedantic but it isnt 1s and 0s when its' coming out of the speakers for they are analogue devices as are the components in the amplifier.

can we be nostalgic of the Luddites ;)

Nout matter with Luddites . . .

Is that your best go at Luddite nostalgia ?

I was around technology from about 1988 onwards, the IBM PC, MS software and the internet were all considered little more than transient technology, personally I could see from a few things I was involved with in about 91-92 that these 3 things would go on to change the world is a significant way, I think many understate the role the IBM PC format played in the mass take up of such technology, genius concept IMHO

^ nice.

i worked for uk mobile computing pioneer psion from 1990 to 1999. when i moved internally from psion to symbian we were convinced that we were heralding a new era in technology. symbian ultimately failed (related reading: smartphones and beyond) but, when i look down at my iphone 4s, i'm proud that i was part of the movement which made it possible.

i have so many great memories from the crazy tornado which was silicon valley in the late 90s - talking hockey with scott mcnealy while waiting for my ceo to show up to a meeting at sun microsystems. i gave the world's first public demonstration of java running on a device other than a desktop pc to a javaone conference room with about 1000 geeky software engneers and got a standing ovation :) good times.

I was mostly using a vax system via a green screen VT terminal back then, there were a few PCs but none networked.

I worked on a Sat Comms system called DSI ( Digital Speech Interpolation) it digitized telephne calls and multiplexed the using the 40% od silence you get from gaos between words etc, the process was reversed at the other end, due to the relavence of speach activity detection toy could just about tell in the call but it didnt cause a problems and clearly worked in terns of ensuring maximise utilisation of the time slot we had in the 2ms transmissions.

A single 19" rack system which had one for one active active redundancy was about £1m, the complete installtions mus have cost a fortune

I found out the other day that not a single one remains in use, all decommissioned a good while back.

These are equally exciting times, who would have predicted such multi platform market and the rate at which technology is converging and in ways that were not widely predicted, I have to say I've never been a massive Apple fan, for me they perfected the process of commodatising technology into devices with suprreme UIs and market leading aesthetics along with a price tag to refect their premium status. In applaud then for that but much prefer the way you can alter and customize things like Linux and Android and get then to do pretty much anyting an apple device ca do for a fraction of he cost....as long as you know how.

I wonder if the the rising tech savy nation will continue their high purchase volumes and lack of cross platform compatibility, only time will tell. Thin client sems to be flavour of the month in my industry so my guess is it will go no where :)

i remember thr akai 900 coming out with 7 yes 7 seconds of sampling time - that must have been 88 or so.music by numbers 909,303 and finding 'that' sound on an old analogue synth ...them were the days with a big fuck off 24 track desk and 900w speakers ahhhhh

I still have toys lying around, star wars toys from the Remastered trilogy all missing blaster rifles and light sabres, millennium falcon with missing bits, Awing that has all its bits, X Wing missing bits. Most shit got lost over the years and all my Lego vanished, if I won the lottery I would buy every single bit of star wars lego and just spend all day smoking weed and building it for the rest of my existence.

this was one of my fav toys

It was indeed the Leeds one... Ended up missing the last train back to Cheshire. So I teamed up with a transvestite punk and although we both had a head full of mushrooms, we manage to fare dodge a train to Beverley then hitch hike to a friend's house out on the moors, finally arriving about 3am. That was some adventure... :)

I lasted till about the 3rd song on Hawkwinds set, the lasers fucked me up, threw a whitey and collapsed against the back wall where everyone had been pissing, happy daze...=D

Only time I ever saw Spacemen 3 live too.
