The Doof Thread

Id love to take my dogs to a doof... like a proper 3 day one. But im worried they wont get much sleep. Can any of you guys shed some light on what your friends do with their dogs when it's sleep time? Do they have them a little doggie tent? I have seen them for sale on ebay! Or do they get their dogs to sleep in their tent with them? If that's the case im worried then I wont get any sleep because they'll keep me awake! I find it hard enough to sleep at doofs as it is at times!

Im thinking maybe a winter doof would work because i can see my dogs passing out by the camp fire because they'll be all fuzzy and warm, but then again i don't know because with everything going on they may not wind down.

We took them to a day doof back in December and they were brilliant! I occasionally find random pics on facebook etc of complete strangers rolling around with my dogs :D so they definitely made a lot of people smile! I guess im just worried and i wont know until the time comes on what to do. I guess i can always just lock them in the tent with us, knock myself out with xanax and worry about them the next day haha. They're bound to pass out if i force them to i spose.

I really wanna take them to a proper doof one day :) They will fucking LOVE it.

I have known of some people to just leave their dogs run a muck while they go sleep in their tent. I can't do that....i wont be able to relax unless i have them with me so i know where they are and know they are safe.

It's a tough one.. maybe im over thinking it.

I have decided though that I will not take any psychedelics if we have our dogs with us. One of us needs to have our wits about us i think if our babies are with us. Im gonna treat it as how i would taking my own kid(s) to a doof.

Fuck the safety of the dogs, what about the comfort of others at the doof? Packs of dogs just roaming around at night alone is just wrong. Even the best behaved dogs get over excited in packs and although they might not necessarily bite anyone, they do intimidate small kids and just cause general mayhem. I have met plenty of great doof dogs who know the rules but like kids, they don't come with some sort of "Doof certified" licence.

I agree you should treat them like you would your kids. Personally I wouldn't want my kids just roaming around with groups of others unattended and expect other doofers to look out for them. I wouldn't want to be out of it even on benzo's if I am looking after them for more than a day or two. Just like kids you just have to accept that you can't doof like you would on your own. I hadn't really thought about the sleep deprivation for dogs but I'd imagine it would even more difficult than trying to get a small child to sleep. I know my own kids are cranky if they don't have a good nights sleep, let alone 3 days of interrupted sleep. Do dogs go mental and play up like kids?

Personally I'm not a big fan of dogs at doofs, simply because I find it a little cruel. I have no problems taking them camping but like you said it is a full on experience over multiple days and not every dog wants to sit next to their owner quietly at camp. You have to consider the same thing with kids. Nothing more frustrating having a barking dog near your camp or sitting minding your own business and some dog bounds over and gets in your face. It may seem cute to you but I have far cuter (and more intelligent) kids to cuddle if I wanted to. It particularly pisses me off when events clearly states "No dogs" and they are still over run. In fact I don't think that I have been to an event that hasn't had dogs, yet most are advertised as dog free.

A lot of events here in Victoria are welcoming of dogs - there are some that aren't and the ones here where no dogs are aloud people have generally applied by the rule i believe. Unless i didn't see the dogs!

As far as our dogs barking at peoples tents etc keeping them awake that wont happen because our dogs are extremely disciplined and well behaved. They're under complete voice control, we have put a lot of hard work in them to make it that way. Also our dogs don't like to wander off without us, where we go they go - i realised this once and for all at the day party we took them too - they were there from 3 in the arvo right till 11pm at night and as it got darker they clung to us! It was really good and relieving to be honest, as we saw other people running around in the dark trying to find their dogs! So i know what you mean about how some people are, they set a bad example for the other dog owners at doofs to be honest. It's like some parents with kids - some parents are good, and some are shit. It doesn't mean the dogs should be not aloud at doofs just like kids going to certain things shouldn't be made not aloud because of the shit parents. It all comes down to the owners.

I do think maybe a 3 day would be a bit long, by the 3rd day i would be worrying about them being really tired. I might try them at a over night one and see how that goes :) it;s taken me years to build up to doing this and i certainly wouldn't do it if i felt that our dogs would not be well behaved.

And maybe you're one of the few people that don't like doof dogs coming and saying hello to you, but in my opinion it's nice to come across one. I was amazed at all the people that actually came over to meet our dogs at the day party, and how many people would call them over and would roll around in the grass with them. I would watch over with caution and was ready to call maxx away if he over stayed his welcome, and when i would the people would tel me to leave him that they are fine and want him with them!

To be honest id also be worried about other peoples dogs, i have learned i can't rely on other dogs being as kind natured and friendly as mine as there was a incident when a dog tried to attack Maxx when it came over to where we were sitting and Maxx went to say hello. The dog actually attacked other dogs at the event too so it's owners like that who should know better as for their dog to be like that it's clearly not properly trained and it's obviously uneasy in the environment. If my dogs became aggressive i know that's a telling sign they are not comfortable, so i would act on that accordingly.

A well trained dog can go anywhere with you, ask any tradie who takes his dog with him everywhere he goes.

Maybe read over my original post as well because clearly i am asking what people do for sleeping arrangements. I don't want my dogs roaming around on their own that's the point! And i also clearly out lined that i wont be doofing like i usually do. Chill man, don't worry my dogs wont be in your face just like you burning down a doof wont be in my face ;)

The Great Dane pictured above (Elle) sleeps in her owners jeep, and I believe she's even tied up in there just in case some knobhead opens the car door.

Other (smaller) doof dogs that I know sleep in the tent with their owners.

I would dearly love to take my dog to a doof!! I took him to an outdoor rave one Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago and he was totally fine. He LOVED meeting all the people, the music didn't seem to bother him (I play louder music in my house ;)) and he kept wandering over in to the middle of the dancefloor area to mingle with everyone =D
I can't take him off-leash though because it's too much stress and concern for me. So honestly I don't think I could take him to a doof..... :(
I think I'd only do it if I arrived on the Sunday morning and just stayed for the day and kept him on-leash the whole time. The night-time would be too much stress.

Hehehe. Lemme guess...you're not a dog person?? ;)

95% of the dogs who frequent doofs down here in Sydney are very well-seasoned at it. They come to every doof and they love it. There are hardly ANY scuffles between them, they're not bothered by the loud bass or the crowds of people, because they've been going to them since they were pups. That's not cruel.

BUT having said that, once or twice I have seen people bring their dog and it was clearly the dog's first doof. They appeared to be fine and enjoying it at first, but half-way through the night they just looked scared and confused. THAT is cruel. But hey, their owner's didn't know that was going to be the outcome, and I can't blame them for wanting to give it a shot. Needless to say those particular dogs haven't been brought back ;)

At no doof i've been to (in my 14 years of doofing) have I seen any issue with dogs even remotely similar to the ones you're referring to Busty - i've never seen packs of dogs roaming a doof and any dogs i've seen are supervised by their owners.

As for being cruel - if you want to think of cruelty, doofs themselves wreak havoc on the local wildlife - have you ever seen insects/snakes, etc exodus form a doof? I was once stuck in my tent for an hour, watching thousands of spiders, ants, crickets and a few snakes moving away from the sound of the music, particularly the bass. I still love doofs and go occasionally, but i also recognise that there is impact on the wildlife in the area. Interestingly, the doof that i saw this at was a 2 night event - the first night was only accoustic instruments - drums, guitars, other percussion, etc and we saw no large amounts of insects, etc moving away - but the second night - electronic music, had a far greater impact.

I also know how well DFRS & will_rave look after and love their dogs and I have no doubt that they'd be supervised and treated wonderfully.

Thanks guys - they are awesome photos, hey! (just to clarify, I "borrowed" them from someone else's camera; my eyes aren't that clever).

Bomboclat - if you're in Sydney over the new year, or any other time, get in touch and we'll work out some doofing fun.
The others have answered most of your questions but, as long as you make the effort to go and talk to other people, you'll make friends easily enough.

Right on man, muchos gracias. Will definitely be in touch if I decide to head down over the new year!

Nostrodamus Prediction...

I bet Samadhi chips in by the end of the day that she has never seen doof dogs running around in packs and that she knows DFRS personally and knows her dogs would be perfect angels...

You're becoming a parody of yourself darling...;)

Dude care to stay on topic and actually address what the topic is about if you need to say anything at all? Whatever bullshit you got going on behind the scenes is not relevant to the topic at hand. It appears you aren't genuinely posting in here, more so acting like a narcissistic prick. Wow awesome moderator you are! 8)

Yeah well you're getting your forums mixed up mate.

Anyhoo lets' go back to the happy doof talk, it's more interesting that this crap. :)

It's been decided! We're going to Somatica! It looks bloody awesome and doofing when it's cooler is my favorite thing to do!! :D

Oi, Sydney doofers, who's going to Bent Perception on the 12th March?? I have a family thing on that day and am weighing up whether or not I can fit in spending time with my biological family AND my doof family in one weekend %) <3

I'm torn and don't know, aaaargh!

It was one of my favourite parties last year but it's so far for just one night! Although, I think it'd going to be a little closer this time.

I'm thinking i might just save my money and self for Strange Brew 3...

Are you going to the Psyfari after party next weekend? [
I've got a 10am flight to Brisbane on the Saturday but I think i'll still swing by and check it out
